Jeter various rumors In regard to the respite or commutation of sentence of Jeter Phillips are without foundation, as the Governor has not as yet received any petition touching the matter. Acknovtledoment of Governor has just approved the hill amending the laws in relation to acknowledgment of deeds. This is an important bill, and concerns number of people. Undor its provisions one notary may tako the acknowledgment of a married woman to a deed.

Tlie old law required two magistrates to take an acknowledgment. United States Marshal" Parker Responds TO THE RuLB AGAINST tllC circuit court of the city of'Richmond Saturday B.Parker. United States marshal, responded to the rule served on him from that court to show causo why ho should not bo punished for contempt of court in not obeying tho writ of habeas corpus issued in case of Patrick Woods. Parker appeared and answered by biscounsel, Mr. Jenkins, that he had arrestod Mr.

Woods by the Speaker of the House of Re-, presentatives' order, and that Woods was now in the custody of the Congress of the United States, and disclaimed any contempt of court, otc. Major Johns then asked the court that an order bo entered "That at the request of counsel for complainant to the rule, the rule against D. B. Parker be dismissed." Judge Wellford replied that in accordance with the request of Woods's counsel it should be done, and tho rule was accordingly discharged. This action of Major Johns was in accordance with instructions from "Washington from General Bradley T.

Johnson. Judge Welltord was evidently very reluctant to discharge the rule for contempt, and only did so at the earnest solicitation of Woods's counsel. Hustings the following business was transacted before Judge Giugon, of this court: Joshua Banks (colored), convicted of registering illegally, was sentenced to be imprisoned in jail twelve months and pay a fiue of and costs. New trial refused by the Judge. Henry Lemus (colored), stealing a bag of 1 corn valued at $1, the property of Edwin.

Bossieuxj was convicted and sent to jail for thirty days and to pay the costs. Joseph Wilson (colored), for robbery In snatching Miss Bertha Page's reticule from her arm whilst walking on Tenth street in this city, was convicted and sent to the penitentiary for eight years. Philip llinchmdn (white), for shooting John L. West (colored) on the lUth of May, 1870, was acquitted. A large of indictments were found by the grand jury.

Mayor's following cases were disposed of by Recorder Powers Saturday A. A. Jones (white), drunk and trespassing on the premises of the city water works and committing a nuisance thereon. Fined $2.50. William Garlick (white), unlawfully collecting and receiving under false pretences from E.

Crouch. Dismissed, no felonious intent appearing. Betsy Banks and Jano Turner (colored), threatening to assault and beat Eliza Nash. Tho latter for threatening to immolate Betsy Banks. Both warrants dismissed, and parties directed to make themselves scarce.

Fanny Coleman (colored), creating a disturbance in the dance-house of James Price, and using profane and indecoot language on the street. Fined $2.50. Charles Courtney (colored), picking the pocket of John Breeden and stealing therefrom one dollar and fifty cents. Sent on lor indictment. Jordan A.

Jackson (colored), assaulting and beating Sarah A. Jackson. $150 security required. Pat Lydon, Dennis O'Connor, and John (yConner, assaulting James Jackson. Dismissed.

George N. Gwathiney was reported for allowing his son, John L. Gwathmey, to throw rocks in the street, and breaking and injuring of the State of Virginia in the haQ of tho House of Delegates. Summons issued. Pat "Woods's Case in the The resolution offered by 31 r.

Stubbs in relation to this case has been cousidereil by the Ilonse Committee on Resolutions. It was jeferred by them to a sub-committee composed of some of the best lawyers in the House, who are instructed to make due and diligent inquiry into the facts and law in the case. -Pat. "Woods at a private source we hear that testimony has been given in the of Pat. Woods before the Judiciary Committee not likely to make him looked upon with much love by his inquisitors.

Howie testified that he punched a hole through Porter's head, and that Porter bled like a stuck pig. A colored witness testified that Pat. first whipped Porter, knocked Humphreys down, and then. made for 9 whole crowd of other men.
