Jan. the sharp break In the cotton market today was not wittout influence upon the stock market, which after four hours of dullness and sold off easily on heavy trading at the closing hour. For several weeks the movement of prices on the stock exchange has been gush as to make It difficult for those who flaunt speculate season out of season to make much headway, and their attention naturally baa been attracted to the cotton market, Where opportunities have been undeniably larger. For the moist part the speculation which followed this shifting of Interest ha been on the Woof riming and therefore a break In cotton so wide and so unexpeoted aft that which ocaurred today made big inroads ott margins. To make these good and provide for future calls It Is altogether likely that speculators In cotton, having some interest still In the stock market, liquidated securities freely to obtain cash.

Volume of Business Small. The volume of business on the exchange was small, and the day's declines, while general. were, save in a limited number of stocks, not extensive. The December figures of the Copper Producers' association made up the best monthly return since that of July, a decrease of 237,000 pounds In stock on hand being the largest reported since the month named. Gain from Subtreasury. Another substantial gain fibm the sub-treasury was noted by the banks, bringing the total since Friday last up to $1,102,000, and profitable rates on loans once more attracted interior money to this center. The Bank of England obtained the lion's share of gold arriving in London from South Africa, and the Bank of Germany made its usual weekly statement, the return reflecting the customary substantial loan reductions and cash receipts which mark the turn of the year.
