The groom is a 1969 graduate of Maries Your Family Decorator Plan rooms for comfort By CARLETON VARNEY When planning the furniture arrangement in your living room, think of comfort and use rather than solely for show. In planning a conversation grouping of chairs and sofa, arrange all pieces so that people can talk directly to one another. Chairs should be about 7 to 8 feet apart, but never more. You wouldn't want a 10-foot sofa flanked by two chairs. People occupying the chairs couldn't converse easily over the 10-foot space.

And frankly, I don't like 10-foot long railroad sofas very much anyway. Persons sitting on the sofa take on the look of "pigeons on a clothesline." Another basic rule of Your Family Decorator on living room furniture arrangement is that end tables should be placed so they can be used for lamps, magazines, ashtrays, flowers or whatever. End tables should have contact with a sofa or chairs end tables that are out of hand reach are strictly out in left field. i i height of end tables, my general rule is that they should be the height of the sofa arm when placed next to I he sofa. They can be, however, the height of the arm of any adjacent chair.

If you plan to use a coffee table in front of your sofa, don't get one that is way over scaled and has to be pushed right up to the sofa. A space of some Hi" should exist between the sofa and the coffee table remember sitting people need a place for legs and feet. I like coffee tables to be an inch or two lower than the seat of the sofa. However, some people I know like coffee tables that are the same- height as the sofa seat. While I don't- like over-scaled coffee tables in small nxms, placed so that they squeeze the sofa, 1 do like hearty sized pieces that are large enough to hold a a i a i bowl, cigarettes and the coffee service with cups.

When planning your living room layout, allow for what is called the traffic pattern. At least rto" of walking space should exist the sofa grouping on one wall and say. a breakfront-occasional chair setup the opposite wall. Dear Family Decorator: "We have a small sewing r(K)m which I would like to redo. Walls are white, but I would like to repaint.

We need to buy new furniture but cannot decide what to use. Any suggestions?" Mrs. H. Dear Mrs. Paint walls a soft lemon ice with ceiling and trim white.

Choose natural rattan furniture with cushions in a burgundy, nutmeg brown and white geometric print on a yellow background. Accent pillows can be lime green, and draperies can be nutmet Complete decorating scheme by laying a ute a rea rug on the floor. --English Studio Mrs. Terry R.
