"La Magnani," as she is called in Italy, portrays Rosa Bombolini, a spitfire matron who badgers her husand into becoming mayor of the village. It was a happy hassle for Quinn and Magnani, who costarred together more than 10 years ago in "Wild Is the Wind." Introspective and subdued on the surface, Miss Magnani still explodes whenever a photographer gets too close to her olive skin and her famous dark-ringed eyes with the harrowing look. "They don't write for Magnani any more," she complains. "That is why I refused so many scripts over the years.

I took this role which was much smaller in the book and put myself in the hands of producer director Stanley Kramer, because he promised to make the part impor- tqnt." Alda's father --an old time film favorite once starred in an early movie biography of song and dance man George Gershwin. This season, son Alan is tackling to use a pun -another George. He plays the role of George Plimpton, "hero" in the comedy "Paper Lion." Plimpton, of course, was playing an alter ego himself when he signed up with the Detroit Lions. A writer, he did it for the experience -later turning out a book on the subject of professional gridiron stars. A. Lyons Library, School of the Ozarks at Point Lookout. The man show, featuring the works of Miss Beverly Waltner, contains several large paintings and is titled Three Dimensional Designs and Paintings." Miss Waltner, a native of Kansas City, received her public school education in Jefferson City and Mamaroneck, N. Y. She attended Lindenwood College in St.

Charles and studied art at New York University, Yale and Columbia as well as in Europe. In addition to having her work displayed in several regional and national exhibits, Miss Waltner took a number of prizes, including first place award, at the 1968 Chautauqua Exhibition of American Art To make the film, Alda took a leave of absence from Broadway, where he earned a "Tony" nomination for his starring role in "The Apple Tree," and where he received acclaim from critics and playgoers for his performance in both "The Owl and the Pussycat" and "Purlie Victorious." In addition, just recently Alda completed a feature film with David Niven and Faye Dunaway, "The Extraordinary Seaman." Chosen by the Ford Foundation to be part of the first professional dramatic company given a fellowship for developing regional theater, Alda has devoted hours of his time starring in a repertory production of his own adaptation of a 2,500 year old story Hutchins is avid Dagwood student HOLLYWOOD (AP) When the producers of CBS's new comedy series "Blondie" tapped actor Will Hutchins to play Dagwood Bumstead they did not know they had acquired a long time student of the venerable comic strip. "Very few people remember why Dagwood is such a bum- bier" said Will authoritatively over a noon repast that minus bread looked amazingly like a Dagwood sandwich surmounted by melted mozzarella cheese. "Chic Young's comic strip was started in the late 1920s and one- of the depression themes was that he was' the son of a very rich man who until he lost his money had never done anything practical." originally titled "The Book of Job." The author of the original, Alda says, is unknown, but he claims the story is the best seller of all times. While smiling about the above statement, the "Paper Lion" star notes that he developed a slight sense of humor as a member of NBC's controversial "That Was the Week That Was." Standing 6 foot 2 inches, Alda says he weighs in at 175 pounds.

Critics claim he bears a strong resemblance to Plimpton, whose exploits as a rookie quarterback for the Lions are exploited in the film version of Plimpton's book. During filming, Alda admitted that being a movie star football hero has its moments of touch and tumble. Laugh, will you? I at 7:15..,. Weddings boost TV ratings for shows MID-AMERICA Coca stars at MU An evening of laughter with Imogene Coca and Hugh (King) Donovan in the Broadway play, "You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running," has been scheduled for 8 p.m. Nov.

9 In Jesse Auditorium as part of the University of Missouri- Columbia's homecoming festivities. The play, written by Robert Anderson, is a treatment of sex In marriage from young to middle-aged spouses to couples past the prune of life. "You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running" consists of four of Anderson's plays beginning with "The Shock of Recognition" which is about a middle-aged actor who is finally offered the lead role in a new play. The second play, "The Footsteps of Doves," takes place in the basement showroom of a bedding store where Harriet and George after 25 years of marriage, have finally decided to shop for a new bed. Be Home for Christmas" is a humorous sketch about two suburban parents and their problem of introducing sex education to their children, a teenage daughter and a college son.

Completing the quartet is "I'm Herbert" in which an octogenarian couple, sitting in a pair of rocking chairs attempts to reconstruct the precious moments of their lives. By CYNTHIA LOWRT AP Television-Radio Writer NEW YORK (AP) If network television's situation comedies come up suddenly with an epidemic of weddings, don't blame the script writers. It's the romance- loving public. Several seasons back "The Farmer's Daughter," a pleasant show with rather unexciting Nielsen ratings, had Inger Stevens in the title role marrying William Windom who played a congressman. The day the wedding show was aired, the ratings jumped into the top 10.

When Betty Jo of "Petticoat Junction" married her cropduster finance a season, the same thing happened. And last month when "The Andy Griffith Show" turned into "Mayberry R. F. on CBS, Sheriff Andy Taylor -Griffith's character marched down the aisle with his Helen, the program attracted more than one-third of the 57- million TV homes and was tuned in by more than half the sets in use at that time. The program, according to a Nielsen survey, was the most popular show during the week Sept.

23 through 29, a period when both ABC and CBS were introducing their new programs. The audience survey for that week of premiere shows indicated that the mass audience seemed more interested in watching old favorites than inspecting the new crop. Following a R. in the top 10 list were CBS's "Here's for Lucille" Ball's show-- and "Family Affair;" NBC's "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" and "Bonanza" CBS's "Doris Day Show," Carol Burnett Show" and "Corner Pyle," and NBC's Bob Hope Comedy Special and "Julia." Only the Doris Day program and "Julia" are new series, but now that Andy Griffith will become only an occasional guest star in "Mayberry R. F.

perhaps that, too, should count as a new series when later, more definitive ratings become available. I A THE WORLD'S HIT flllS 117 W. High PALACE Dill He's the Hying- and dying- end in excitement!
