satel-. lite Is exploring for uranium deposits In the Powder River basin of Montana and Wyoming. The satellite project is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy as part of its national uranium resource evaluation, It I is similar to another satellite project developed by the state and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to identify water resources. Gary Raines, a U.S.

Geological Survey geologist working on the uranium project, said the satellite can pick out "re- gional areas that are favorable for uranium" and tell commer- cial uranium propectors "where you could do exploration." In simple terms, here's how it works: Scientists have found that uranium deposits are assocl- ated with certain types of ground formations. They also know that those formations are associated with certain types of veg- etation. Using images of earth taken by a NASA Landsat satellite, the scientists can pinpoint where that vegetation and thus uranium is. "We've tested the concept with 1,200 (test holes) and it works," said Raines, who lives in Denver. Raines said his uranium study concentrates on land be- tween the Bighorn Mountains and Black Hills and between the Yellowstone and Platte rivers.

Several state departments have been working with NASA for more than a year to develop ways of using Landsat to pin- point water resources. Among that study's early benefits is an indication of the efficiency of irrigation projects. For example, the satellite images show clearly where irrigation projects overlap, miss their targets or are spaced too far apart. Missing girl's body found BROWNING (AP) The body of a 7-year-old girl who was missing since Dec. 17 was found this week 14 miles west of Browning, FBI agent Arnie Anderson said Wednesday.

Authorities said the search for Monica Lynn Still Smoking began when She disappeared after attending school in Brown- ing, where she lived with her mother, Melba Still Smoking. Of- ficials said the girl's body was discovered on a hilltop Monday by an uncle who was part of the extensive search effort. Anderson refused to release any information on the con-' dition of the body or possible cause of death. The body was taken to Great Falls for an autopsy Tuesday. Great Falls city manager surprised at investigation GREAT FALLS (AP) City Manager Chris Cherches says he is suprised that the federal government is challenging the city for allegedly discriminating in hiring on the basis of age.

Cherches said the city is merely following a state law. I The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has challenged the city for setting maximum ages at which police- men and firemen can be hired. But Cherches said Great Falls, as a political subdivision of the state, has no choice but to follow Montana law. I The law says no persons aged 40 or older may be hired as policemen and no persons 31 or older may be hired as fire- men. Federal officials have asked the city to either seek a state attorney general's opinion by Jan.

11 on the legality of the Montana law, or cease the hiring policy. Cherches said he has written the commission a letter saying that, if the state law violates federal law, the federal government should deal directly with the state. "We're telling one Big Brother to talk with our other Big Brother," he said. Officials said sparks from a cutting torch ignited residue Inside the empty tank, one of 10 tanks at the Westco Refining Co.

facility at Kevin. The tiny town is halfway between Shelby and the Canadian border. Although the refinery is closed, the Cut Bank-based company still uses some of the tanks to store crude oil. Just 20 yards from the fire, another tank held 10,000 gallons of crude, according to officials. The blaze burned the exterior of the filled tank, but firemen from Cut Bank, Shelby and Kevin kept any of the crude from igniting.
