Radio announcer dies broadcasting NEWS TRiSUNE. JeHerson City. Sunttay. June 27. KANSAS Kan.

(AP) "I was talking and then, all of a sudden, there were three gasps and all hell broke loose when equipment fell Then there was silence." Marjorie Rifas was a regular caller on Harry Becker's early morning radio talk show, and she recalled vividly that she was on the line talking to Becker about 1:30 a.m. Friday when he collapsed. "I'm talking away, yakkity yak, and he started gasping for breath. And I yelled, "shesaid. Another regular caller recognized the sounds of Becker's efforts to get air and alerted authorities.

Becker, 57, a veteran broadcaster, was found on the floor of Station KCKN near his microphone. He was pronounced dead at a hospital, apparently of a heart attack. Mrs. Rifas, who lives in nearby Overland Park, is bothered by heart problems but said because she is a night person she managed to follow Becker's 12 midnight to 6 a.m. "Dialogue" show regularly.

A spokesman for the station said Becker had developed a close following during his nearly two years as a talk show host. It became especially evident when word was broadcast Friday morning that he was dead. "We've been getting calls from people in tears all morning." said another member of the radio station's staff. "We're a country-western station and people had a great affinity for Mrs. Rifas has 93 tape recordings of her telephone appearances on the show, carefully indexed.

She went back through her files to find the subjects Becker had discussed in the past month or so--Father's Day, pensions, free birth control clinics. The discussion Friday Tnorning was about whether congressmen should have special immunity from the law, and the talk turned to the recent reports of sex for pay on Capitol Hill. Mrs. Rifas said she was responding to a question from Becker when he collapsed. While another listener called authorities, Mrs.

Rifas said she made several calls but could get no information about what happened and was told it had already been reported. "I have never felt as close a friendship as I have with Harry," said Mrs. Rifas, who never met him personally. "I feel a tremendous loss." Becker started working for the Kansas City, radio station in 1960 after he had worked in broadcasting outside the area. He was a native of Kansas City.

He is survived by the widow, Helen Margaret, and a son, Richard W. Becker of Kansas City. The funeral will be Monday morning at Newcomer's Sons Funeral Home in Kansas Citv. Audit supports lax conditions An audit of the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Missouri has confirmed previous reports of lax management and internal controls that prompted commission members to turn financial accounting work over to another agency. The report issued by state Auditor George Lehr Friday noted that nearly $3.500 in unpaid bills at the end of last year were more than 30 days overdue.

One bill had been turned over for collection and some equipment of the commission repossess, the report said, while another bill had gone 10 months without being paid. "Efforts have been made to improve the sitation," the report noted. "However, at Feb. 4.1976. S1.073of the Dec.

31 payables still remained unpaid." In response, the commission cited its transfer of accountting responsibility from its own staff to the Department of Consumer Affairs, which overseas the operation, as well as the termination of the employe deemed accountable for the billing problems. The audit report also noted that the number of commemorative bicentennial medallions on hand at the commission was 147 fewer than records showed. The sale of medallions had been a major project for the commission. The value of the missing medallions was more than S800 and the report cited failure to count the medallions when they were delivered to insure the number ordered was received and poor security in storing them as possible reasons for the shortage. Among other problems cited in the report were failure to record and properly deposit receipts when they came into the.

office, delay in transmitting funds to the proper accounts and poor control over employe expense forms. Conferences a re scheduled A series of 11 conferences this summer of industry representatives and state education, commerce and industrial development personnel will be held to help determine how students can better be trained for employment in factories and offices in the state. One of the programs will be held July 16 at the area vocational school in Rolla. Another will be held Aug. 6 at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia.
