Last Monday was All Saints day, a festival of the Roman Catholic choroh, introduced on aeconntofthe impossibility of keeping a separate day for every saint. In the fourth century the Sunday after Easter was appointed by the Greek church for commemorating the martyrs and in the chnrch of Borne a similar festival was introdoeedabont the year 610, to Mary and all the martyrs, to be observed about March 13th, But the real festival of all saints was first regularly established by Pope Gregory the fourth, in the year 835, and appointed to be observed on the first of November.

The day was doubtless chosen on account of its being the date of one of tho four great festivals of the heathen Nations of the north, 1 st February, 1st May, 1st August and 1 st November) as it was the policy of the church to supplant heathen by Christian observances. The second day November, or the day following All Sainte day, All Souls day, another festival of the Catholic chnrch. Its object by prayers and alms giving to alleviate the sufferings of the souls in Purgatory. It was first instituted in the Monastary of Clugny, in the year 993, and the following is the account given of the circumstances in which it originated A pilgrim was returning from the holy land and was compelled by a storm to land on a rocky island somewhere between Sicily and Thessalonica. There ho met a hermit who told him that among the cliffs of the island was an opening into the under world through which ascended flames, and the groans and cries of souls tor meated by evil angels.

The hermit said he had also frequently heard the complaints and imprecations of the devils, at the number of souls that were torn from them by the prayers and alms of the pious, and that they were especially enraged against the Abbot and Monks of Clngny. The pilgrim, on his arrival home, acquainted the Abbot Clugny with what bad come to his knowledge, who at once appointed the day after All Saints, to be kept in his Monastery as a festival for "All Souls." The observance was quickly adopted by the whole Oath olic world. In some parts of the West ofEug land it is customary for the children to go around to all the neighbors on tbis dny, sonling, as they call itcollecting small contributions, and singing the following verses 8 oul Soul 1 for a soul cake, Pray, good mistress, for a cuko. One for Peter, two for Paul, Three for them who made us all. 8 oul Soul for an apple or two If you've got no apple, will do.

Dp with down with your pan Give me a good big one, and 1 11 be gone. The soul cake referred to in the verse is a sort of ban, which formerly, it was an almost general custom, in England for the people to make, and give to one another on Novum ber second. GT Young people often sympathise with, and wonder in what the pleasures of old people consist We can Imagine that the expression, "I have lived a useful life," would briug more solid happiness than all the pleasures of hope. When Croesus asked Solon who was the most Messed man, he cited the case of one who was dfead, and for whom tho people mourned. iy To those of oar friends who have to purchase either dry goods groceries, we would advise them to consult our advertising columns before making their They are all reliable and sell only first dass goods.
