A iBEHT LEA THURSDAY MARCH 31 1881 Entered at the post offlee in Albert Lea as second class mail matter WILLIAMS) DRAKE Editors There will be no extra session of congress this spring Minnesota pays annually nearly $3000000 for sugars and syrups The Riley trial was to have com menced at Austin yesterday The prosecution will be conducted by county attorney Goodwin and XV Losey of La Crosse and the defence by Erwin of St Paul' and Lafayette rench There will proba bly be considerable delay in obtaining a jury owing to the notoriety which the case has attained and the discussion which it has undergone The Enterprise complains of the scarcity of funds in the county treas ury and draws a comparison between the county and city fathers There is as much difference between the two boards as there is between the Supreme Court of the state of Minnesota and the Younger brothers The seem to legislate with the strictest economy and save every centto tlie county that is in their power The or the Morin Arm strong part of it have been fayish with the city in expending it to im 4 prove their own property at the ex pense of others which is nothing more or less than downright robbery When the do this The Standard will condemn their ac tions with as much severity as it does the plundering of the The Enterprise insults the' county board by its unjust comparison The St Paul and Minneapolis papers are mysteriously silent as to whether the judges of the supreme or district courts will act under the provisions of the i a Pillsbury bond bill Some days ago the Minneapolis Tribune said there was no reasonable doubt that that the court would be constituted and that it would prob ably be composed of three 'judges of the supreme court and two district judges but since that time there has been no farther reference to the matter That there is great hesitancy on the part of the judges to act there can be no doubt and a judge who accepts the trust will have to possess a pretiy high character to escape suspicion of having been bought for undoubt edly the bondholders are willing to pay lib erally to have the provisions of the Pillsbury bill carried out was made in this Ipaper re cently of the sailing of a fleet of barges from St Louis with oyer 10000 tons of grain (20847900 pounds) for export by way of New Orleans The fleet was towed by the steamer Oakland which "took in addition to the eight grain' barges a capacious fuel barge The largest tows last year were: as follows The Iron Mountain and barges left St Louis April 10 with 300000 bushels of corn o16000000 pounds cargo The same boat and barges ebruary 29 with 37000 bushels of wheat and 210 228 bushels of corn or 14392768 lbs The' Gilmore July 17 with 178000 bushels of wheat and 30000 bushels of corn or 13860000 pounds and the Oakland August 10 with 230158 bush els of wheat The shipment from St Louis by barges for European account last year reached a total of 15717664 bushels of wheat corn and rye The shipments of the same sort in 1870 comprised only 66000 bushels of wheat The prospect of an extension of the operations of the St Louis and New Orleans barge line to Davenport Iowa next summer has led the Democrat of the latter city to investigate the pro gress and prospects of the barge sys tem It finds that at the close of 1880 there were four lines of tow boats and barges engaged in transportation aggregating 15 boats and 86 barges with a total capacity in bushels of 4690000 and 4200000 per month to New Orleans The boats and barged now building number 1 boat and 24 barges of the latter 22 having a capacity of 60000 bushels each and 2 of 50000 each which will increase the total capacity to 60000000 bushels There are now four established barge lines fronr St Louis to New Orleans for the transportation of grain for export and three of them are mak ing the additions referred to above The four rank as follows in present and building capacity Mississippi Valley Transportation Company 7 boats and 49 barges with a total capacity of 2520000 bushels St Louis and New Orleans Transportation Company 6 boats and 50 barges with a total capacity of 2550000 bushels the Anchor Line Company with 2 boats and 12 barges and a total capacity of 50000 bushels and the Co with 1 boat and 9 barges of 540000 bushels capacity The trips of the tows of these lines last year from St Louis direct numbered 112?
