Don't overlook the garage as a logical Epot for storing things. Installation of shallow floor-to-ceillng cabinets with sliding doors is easy and inexpensive. Such a cabinet is excellent for garden tools and outdoor equipment, as well as automobile washing and waxing accessories and a miscellany of other items.

On the opposite wall, located high so it will save floor space, can be constructed additional cabinets with shelves. Because they require practically no room, sliding doors are wonderful for such cabinets. They are made of Masonite hardboards, which come in large panels readily cut to the required size. Fittings for the larger doors can be purchased at a hardware store. For the smaller cabinet, the sliding panel doors can be inserted in channels made from wood Amateurs Need Good Equipment When Painting Painting is something everyone thinks he can do.

But, as those ho have botched up jobs can testify, it isn't as easy as it looks. There is much more to painting than wielding a brush. The time of the year when painting is done, condition of the surface to be covered and the type cf equipment used are all important considerations. Fall is an ideal season for painting. Surfaces, especially those exposed to weather, generally are dry after the hot months of summer.

Preparing a surface for paint may mean a complete washing for one that Is exceptionally dirty or only a brushing for one that Is dusty. New surfaces usually need a priming coat of paint. Old painted surfaces often require scraping and filling in of cracks. In choosing painting equipment it is best not to skimp on expenditures. A few extra dollars spent for good painting tools are the amateur's best insurance for success.

Paint should be of high quality. select the right paint for any particular surface. Brushes, too. should be of high quality. Here again, it pays to follow a dealer's advice.

For most painting, at least two brushes are needed, one four to five inches wide for use on large areas and one about two inches wide for trim work. To be sure that paints and brushes are given fair chances to help do perfect Jobs, paint mixing should be done carefully. This calls for two mixing paddles and two galvanized steel palls. Empty paint into one cf the pails a little bit at a time. Mix and add more paint.

Then pour the paint from one pail to the other a few times. When painting begins, paint from cne of the galvanized pails. These pails have convenient carrying nan-dies and do not tip over easily. Amateurs always have better luck when painting slowly. Accordine to leeend, reports th National Wildlife Federation, the oak is hit by lightning more than any other tree.

went to work today i under a new one-year contract giving them a 10-cent hourly pay boost and improved pension benefits. i The pact with the CIO Interna- tional Union of Electrical Workers (IUE) expires Sept. 30, 1951. It can be reopened for wage talks after six months. The pay boost is retroactive to i last September 18.

Affected workers had been making an average $1.56 an hour under the old contract. Negotiations are continuing with three other unions in Westinghouse which have another 50,000 workers. PROVIDES PENSION The CIO-ITJE contract provides a pension guaranteeing a $100 minimum, including social security, for workers retiring after 25 years service. The company agrees to completely finance the pensions for workers earning less than $4300 a year. Workers making more than $4,800 can obtain higher pensions by participating in a contributory plan.

The social insurance program in the new contract provides life insurance from S2.500 up, depending on employes' earnings, sick and accident insurance up to $32 a week for 26 weeks and certain other benefits. The pension and insurance plans are to be in effect for five years but either plan may be reopened for negotiations after one year by mutual consent. James B. Carey, chairman of the ClO-IUE. which has been negotiating with Westinghouse for four and one-half months, said the contract is "excellent and asserted it will "help all Westinghouse employes and the entire labor movement in the nation.
