of town lots and personal property forty per cent This change in the valuation does not alter the amount of State and coun ty taxes to be collected as the tax le vied for State purposes will now be 2J mills and the tax for county purposes 2 mills against a tax last year of 5 mills for the State and 6 mills for the county The total valuation of real estate in reeborn county Jis given at £2550377 Leiter from John A Lovely 3 Mr Editor There arc now inetwo lettersJwritten' by friends from different parts of the' county in which the fact that I aui a candidate for the State Senate is alluded to with pro fessions of friendship and promises of assistance and in nearly the same words the writer of each letter asks the perti nent question if you are a can didate you Come around nd see us and fix things Advice of the same kind has been give me' verbally by many others during the past two weeks one warm hearted friend emphasizing his suggestion to work for my nomioa ti by the remark that if I did not do as the other candidates did I would not make the i go to the Senate from reeborn county I have only one fault to find with the tenor of these kind words viz that friendship for theman is made paramount to principles and capacity the consideration of proper candidates'for public service I do not now desire Mr Editor to an nounce my political convictions norwhat measures I shall support if elect ed1 I am ready and have always been ready to let those who desire to know understand my exact political position but I have no business to trespass upon your space to that extent What I de sire is an opportunity to explain my attitude personally in conducting the campaign My convictions and princi ples as a politician may be matters for consideration for the delegates who may meet in convention my conduct before the convention in the light of the ad vice above referred to concerns myself alone without reference to my politics an individual and also as a candi date I do not wish to be misunderstood Let the convention do as it will I have some anxiety that my and my enemies too for that know just how much and howdittle I want to be senator from reeborn coun ty what I am and what I am not willing to do to secure the nomination It is true that I am a candidate for the above named office subject to the choice of the Republican county con vention But it is also true that the idea of beinir a candidate did not oris CT inate "in my own brain It was not until more than a dozen representative men of this county whose names I can give had expressed to me a wish to support me for that 'office that I an nounced myself a candidate (I mor ally doubt if either of the other candi dates in this town can say as much rom these unsolicited expressions of opinion I was very naturally led to be lieve that quite a considerable number of the citizens of this count preferred that I should serve them in the Legis lature To be worthy of that preference to meet it by honest labor and hard work to win the respect of the people I live with and among whom I expect to die by honorable services is I believe a laudable ambition and the matter with )On the other hand to have office without the bation and against the wishes people and to obtain it merely own personal exertions would time be no satisfaction to me it is I will say so Again I desire to add that before nor since the convention was called have I visited any of the towns of the county to secure delegates in my favor or for political purposes Nor have I teazed or solicited any man to support me nor asked as sistance except where it was first freely offered and what is more I am not go ing to do either the one or the other for some very good reasons irst of which I have not time for that kind of work I shall be in court or attending to pressing professional duties for my "clients every working day between this and the 7th of next October These duties caftnot be delegated as easily as loaning money or selling lumber Another and to my mind abetter rea son why I cannot inn around the county see my friends pick out the delegates and make promises no human being ever fulfilled and no honest man should fulfill is simply that I be lieve in the business If the time has not come when honest Republicans can deliberate upon the selection of men for public positions of trust without being controlled by such influences as I have referred to then Mr Editor 1 will wait until it does come even if I never go to the Legislature However I do pot fear any convention that may meet in reeborn county will be the result of such artifices as these Appropos of what I have written above I have been repeatedly asked whether or not the county officers ring so will support me? In I can only say that I do not know whether they will or not and in truth I do not care In my relation" with these respectable gentlemen! have acted upon the presumption that they have enough to do in attending to their own and the business without tak ing the burden of my contest on their hands I have not? asked them to support me because I consider the mat ter of who shall represent this county in the Legislature not more their busi ness than the fourteen or fifteen hunT dred other men whose support I have not asked So far as I am these gentlemen think so too If they du not they will be apprised of the fact sooner or datcr '7 I am informed also) that some person yet unnamed as a candidate will be an nouned in the convention and what is' more will? be easily me say in this connection that of several men who would servethe co'unty better than myself or either of the other candidates already in the canvass and if such a man is selected by the convention it would4iot grieve me so much as the selection of a man whose interests in reeborn county have only grown up during a sojourn here of two or three years spent in the accu mulation of wealth and the cultivation of political ambition a Quite recently my attention has been called to stories that have been told about what I haveJpromised6flid and done which shqw that rmy epemies of lang fyne dead yet nThese stones can1' only be true upomthe pothesis that I am a fool and are unt worthy of being answered' 5 i 3 To my enemies who hopeto injure me by telling these stories I would say you will not injure me much if youi should securo my defeat for the mo 1 mentary regret which defeat would cause would give place to the consola tory reflection that my business inter i 1 INALLY REALIZED THEAG?
