Cooley written from Nebraska on the 7th inst gives this melancholy picture of the affairs in that State He says: I have very doleful news to write you about the grasshoppers in this State Almost everything in Nemaha and Richardson counties is laid waste by the little infernal pests and not only in these two counties but almost all over the State In those parts of the State where they did not hatch they are coming upon the wing and devast ating everything This State is not alone in her troubles Kansas Texas Colorado and Missouri are suffering badly I saw Mr Barrada to day he informed me chat he had just returned from Kansas and says that he saw but one piece of wheat and one of corn and the the lit tle fiends of hell were just going for them They bid fair to create a terri ble famine throughout this Western country Two men went to mill the other day Could get no flour without the money they drew their revolvers and told Mr Bennet the flour they must and would have that their families were starving Took what they needed and told Mr they would pay for it when they could In Richardson county force has been re sorted to to obtain bread The people are holding meetings all over the coun try trying to devise means for the suf ferers to subsist upon A mass meet ing is to be held at alls City Wednes day the 9th for the purpose of appoint ing a committee to wait upon the Gov ernor with petitions from said people requesting him to call a special session of the legislature and see if they can not devise some means to relieve the sufferers John Shortledge thinks that his or chard is entirely destroyed by the hoppers The fruit crop generally throughout the country is badly in jured by them and the worst of it is they do not let up decrease or dimin ish in the least I am sure that if a ditch could have been dug from my shop to the river that they eould not have crossed it would have caught one thousand bushels in the last two weeks I could fill several sheets of paper
