14 The Casper Tribune-Herald Sunday, October-23, 1949 fee foim mm TRIBUNE HERALD SPORTS Cwfeys won y.ij,(sir1!3c if emem Gets Contest with 4 fcjl St. Mary's Team for Oct. 29 OUT ON THE LIMB with JIM HICKS WT -4 Draw Closer to Championship Defeat Utah First Time in 45 Years By BEN FUNK LARAMIE, Oct. 22. (P) Wyoming's a d-punching Cowpokes moved within shooting distance of their first Skyline Six football championship today by clattering to a 13-0 victory over Utah.

The win was doubly sweet for Coach Bowden Wyatt's rough, tough boys, for it not only gave them reasonable assurance of at least a tie for the Skyline title, but was the first they had scored over a Utah team in 45 long years. The Cowboys, who now have won six games in a row and three in conference play, can clinch a tie for the championship here next Saturday by beating last-place Brig ham Young, and that should be an easy chore. WIN IT IN FIRST HALF Hungry for the victory over the Utes for which they had waited since 1904. the Cowpokes rushed out and got it in the first half. They scored in each of the first two periods and There is no more fitting manner in which to open a sports column jlhan with a tribute to a known, local sports figure.

i It has seemed fashionable in the past few years for athletes and those connected with athletics to take two beatings whether they win or lose. 2 a beating from their opponent in the stress of competition and another beating from the pen of a writer sitting from 10 to 100 yards away. That doesnt seem rieht. 1 For a change" of fashion here is a letter tribute to one of Casper's leading; sports figures: 1602 Oak St, Abilene, Oct. 16, 1949 he Casper Tribune-Herald, Oasper, pjear Sirs Enclosing a check of $5 to cover one year's subscription to the Sunday Tribune.

We like to keep up with the fortunes of the Casper Mustangs. Would like to take this occasion to call the attention of the Sports (Editor to the enclosed newspaper clipping of a picture of our son. Bill. Bill attended Casper schools, Roosevelt, Lincoln and Casper Junior Jhigh. We attribute his present success on the football field to the early training he received in Casper from Quincy Tarter, the grade-school coach.

I Also the fine cooperation he received from Miss England, principal of I Lincoln school and Miss Nichols of Lincoln school. Wish you would call attention to the fact that the boy they helped is making good. Tribune-Herald Photo LEROY PEARCE SCAMPERS for his touchdown while four Redskins chase along behind. Ute Russell Neilson appears to raise a congratulatory arm. Don Price and Bruce War-burton, other Utah players, perform as rear guard for the TD parade.

Last season Bill was high-point player for Abilene high school, scoring a total of 35 points. This season, in six games, he has scored 36 points. This includes 12 points from placement as he has completed 12 of 17 attempted conversions. He usually plays the fullback position, sometimes alternating at left 'half, depending on the play. So if Quincy Tarter is still in Casper, would like for you to get this letter to his hands as we want him to know we appreciate his efforts in the I early training of our boy.

Former Casper residents, i Mr. and Mrs. John Calusha I A note on the picture mentioned by Mr. and Mrs. John Galusha: The cutline reads "Bill Galusha, one of the 15 reasons Abilene is expected to field one of the strongest schoolboy football teams in the i state this fall." I HABIT-FORMING Coach Bowden Wyatt's back must be plenty sore today following his Cowpokes' historic 13-0 victory over the Utah university football team something no Wyoming team has ever done before.

We like to think of Wyoming's conference wins this year as being I habit-forming, legitimate and hereafter to be expected in every grid I season. The team will now be "that-tough-one-to-beat." It looks like the Wyatt-men are heading for a Skyline Six cham- pionship. Let's hope mid-century means a reversal and more Wyoming win-column scores. Oct. 22 i) The Philadelphia Phillies have made no move to renew a television contract for next season's baseball games, and the likelihood is the telecasts will be scrapped. Owner Bob Carpenter made it plain today he is not happy that his club didn't go over the 1.000.000 mark in attendance as it finished third, highest since 1917. He wouldn't commit himself on the TV situation, though. "There must be some reason why the crowds weren't bigger," Carpenter mused.

"It could have been television. Certainly there never was a more interesting Phillies' ball club to watch.
