facilities for doing business ees of County Officers A law oflast winter requires the several county officers to report the amount of their fees to the Commissioners for publication In accordance with this the reports have beet? made and the aggregates given in the published proceedings of the Board The Concert believe it to bo conceded that tho concert on Mondaylnight was tjbe jest entertainment of kind ever given in "this place Prof Raymond controlled his army of singers as if by magic The audiencewas large and of the appreciative class while the per ibrmera fully met their expectation It would be very difficult for us to deter mine upon the most meritorious pro duction but we know that Hail Smil ing Slumber lee as a Bird to 2 Hallelu Dream oh my Soul Beau tiful and Sleigh all found us deeply absorbed in the jeautiful sentiment and melody The Hallelujah is probably one of the moat difficult pieces eVer written and required the Closest application to mas ter It was well rendered' and though its melody would not be considered as soft and sweet as mafty of the less dif ficult productions yet no one could fail to appreciate it for the grandeur of its 1 is old but the manner of its presentation on this occa sion made it entirely new It was sung with animation clear articulation and in perfect time 1 The New oundland repre sented a scene at sea A child having fallen overboard was rescued by the faithful animal' The dramatic style in which this was presented evidently in terested the audience: Beautiful for senti ment and sweet melody we think car ried with it the greatest charm Mrs Greene who sang the sdo is entitled to congratulations for the clear voice and happy modulation of tone which thoroughly enlisted the audience Basso represented a quarel among singers which was finely enacted But the most enlivening selection on the list waS Sleigh sang in splendid time and tone by the entire chorus and high above the multitude of voices could be heard the gingle of jells the crack of whip and the ani mated shouts of the 'driver It fairly carried the house by storm i Several singers who sustained leading parts or carried solos did exceedingly well and we would be glad to mention them by name but fear to do so least offense should be given those whd did very nearly as well The instrumental part of the performance was also satis factory in the highest degree Prof Raymond has the thank of this community for the efficient work that je has done and the musical interest 10 has inspired among our people Oak Hill Grange of Bancroft held a publio installation of Mrs A Johnson for the kind ness and generosity in allowing the use of her piano at the concert on Monday evening It is all the more appreciated from the fact that there are not many who are willing to have so valuable a piece of property moved about: and handled And although the favor was greater than could be reasonably asked yet it was found absolutely necessary toj have such an instrument hall is 16x40 fitted up with artistic taste and with an eye to fitness and convenience for Grange purposes The afternoon was devoted to conferring the ourth Degree upon 15 brothers and 12 sisters The hall was arranged for that purpose On the platform in front of Ceres Pomona and lora was a most beautifully constructed sheaf of wheat with a sickle on it as an em blem and still further in front was an octagon altar having the top covered with the richest of black silk velvet and a large elegant Bible on it officer had a desk all was system and order After conferring the degrees which was most impressive and which must have a lasting influence for good a ta ble was set the whole length of the hall for the harvest feast If we were to attempt to tell all that the good sla ters of Shell Rock had provided for the occasion we would fail Wo had plenty of baked turkey chickens spare rib pork and beans all kinds and varieties of sweet cake all kinds of piea biscuit and honey pickles Ac There were fully 150 to partake of the feast as Shell Rock Grange hasa membership of 100 and visitors from other Granges in this county and Iowa and an invitation to outsiders made up the number To enliven the occasion they bad an organ to accompany sing ing After the table was cleared the next thing on the programme was the installation of officers which was set down for the evening At 6 the Master Ai Bartlett brought down his gavel with authoritative force which restored order The installation occupied about an hour which was full of instruetion and must have imbued the minds and hearts of all present with more generous thoughts and impulses and give them a higher appreciation of God and His eternal principles Of all the sweet ness of human toil cf all the motive powers that give alacrity to the hand or foot readiness to the will intelligence to the mind and purpose the quickest andtuost enduring in results is the kind ward spoken in The following are tho officers in stalled Master A women and their culi nary skill which made quite a flutter among the male portion until they eyed the speaker from head to foot and then squinted down as much as to say have no fears of the reciprocation of the After the labors of the day and even ing were over I came to the following conclusions: irst That the Shell Roek Grange has no peer in this coun ty and may challenge the State 2d That itembraces within its fold nearly all within its jurisdiction 3d Intelli gence sociability and hospitality are not wanting 4th That it bad cement ed them together in fraternal love and kindness and established a cordial brotherhood in their midst Their present hall is not large enough to meet their growing wants and they contemplate building in the spring a two story building 24x60 upper story for a Jiall lower story for a Grange store and have nearly funds enough raised for the purpose We wish them Godspeed LAW?
