Aaroirtg Siar, TsJa, May 10, 1960 nn 1 4 tvf An rv WEEKEND CLEANING THE CUFF: Venetian Way's easy romp to the 86th Kentucky Derby may be rated as the upset of the year in sports since all you could hear before the race was Tompion and Bally Ache. Jockey Bill Hartack rode a smart race ss he piloted the fairly-backed horse to the winner's circle. Tompion ran at Venetian Way in the stretch but just didn't have euough to make the catch. And so it is the Preakness next and you can bet the big play on words will be swiftly changed to Venetian Way now. also got some times and a look at the Indians and now we know what we are up against in the state the head mentor concluded.

Although it doesn't show in the summaries or the point totals, the Casper mile relay team broke the existing state record by a full two tenths of a second last Saturday. Blair McCann, Earl Dorsett, Dave Iludgel and Jim Barber stepped the distance in 3:34 as compared to the state mark of 3:36. This is also a new school record, Geldien reported. Of course the real news was Frank Izzarelli's prodigious heave of 153 ft. 314 in.

in the discuss event which shattered the old Fort Collins mark set by Douglas' Bud Spicer two years ago. To date Izzarelli has progressed upwards with each of the three meets as he set new marks in the Casper Invitational, Billings Jay-cee Festival and the CSU meet last Saturday. He started at 143 feet plus in the Invitational here, went to 149 at Billings and now 153 at Fort Collins. Chuck Amadio bested Rufus Hoefer of Cheyenne in the pole vault as the Cheyenne star went out at 11 feet and Amadio stayed in to tie for second place. Casper's Dave Iludgel qualified for the finals of the 100 yard dash but was closed out of the scoring when Chris Babbs of Denver East broke the record in winning the event.

Iludgel was clocked in a good 10.3 for his final run. A former Casper athlete, Jerry Jensen, finished third to Izzarelli in the discus. Jenson, now with Brighton, Colo, high, left Casper as a freshman three years ago. Babbs, who won three first places, nearly broke ex-Mustang Hi Gcrnert's quarter mile record. Gernert turned in a 49.5 clocking in 1955 and Babbs won the event Saturday in 49.6.

Geldien said the Mustangs would probably get a full week of work this week and then taper off the early part of next week. With construction still planned for the NCIIS track, the availability is uncertain this week. Casper's Frank Izzarelli busted his third meet record in as many weeks wheu he" sailed the discus 153 ft. 334 in. to win the Colorado State U.

Invitational event. He broke the old record established by Bud Spicer of Douglas. Cheyenne's Tom Galbos broke Spicer's old shot-put record with a heave of 56 ft. V2 in. Thus the two top weight men in the state will be here in Casper on May 20-21 for the state AA meet.

Hi Gernert's old quarter mile record was nearly shattered last Saturday when little Chris Babbs of East High, Denver, turned the one lap in 49.6 Gernert's record 49.5 Babbs broke the 100 and 220 yard dash marks as a triple winner. Without the results on the Sunday game the local Legion nine split 2-2 in the first four contests on the road. When you stop and consider that these clubs the Bucs were playing all had between eight and 12 games to their credit, the locals can be figured as tough for the coming season in Wyoming competition. The Bucs hit well and their fielding was up to par in at least three of the ball games. The long-ball hurt them in two of the games although they pulled one out of the lire.
