10 Poit-Stor, GUni Folli, N.Y. Gladys Knight Has Starring Film Role Georgia." Gladys and the Pips had a summer TV show last year and may do another. But she has lived 13 years in Detroit and intends to stay "even though I'm gone six months a year, I like to keep a stabilized life for the children." Records and in 1967 they scored with "I Heard It-Through the Grapevine." The hits kept coming: "Nitty Gritty," "Friendship Train," "If I Were Your Woman," "I Don't Want to Do Wrong," "Help Me Make It Through the Night," and of course "Midnight Train to there is not a single artist that doesn't have some form of background. Most of the background people don't get credit, but my guys are part of the act. "Unless they get something going for them, I think we will stay together.

If I've gotta sing, I'm going to sing with them." But it seems apparent that Gladys Knight is seeking new areas of endeavor after 28 years of singing for the public. That's right 28 LOS ANGELES (AP) -Diana Ross did it, so why not Gladys Knight? Having won a queen's share of Grammies and gold records, Gladys Knight is making her debut as a dramatic actress in a movie about the Alaska pipeline without the Pips. Does that mean she may branch out as a single, as did Diana Ross? "I don't think so," she says. "It's not that I'm insecure about myself or my talent so that I would be afraid to go out alone. But Sports on TV I At a Glance Darleen Carr's Future Bright If ZZZ')I years.

And she's only 32. The film is "Pipe Dreams," an independent venture directed by Steve Verona, who made the impressive "The Lords of Flatbush." No sound stage pampering for Gladys; she did her role in the bonechilling cold of the Alaskan interior. "I never felt so good in my life," she remarked, "and I never felt so cold in my life." The movie was filmed at pipeline locations near Valdez, 100 miles from Anchorage. The weather was unseasonably warm: 10 degrees above, on the average. The plot: Gladys' marriage is breaking up, her husband goes off to Alaska as a bush pilot.

She discovers she is pregnant, follows him north and encounters the strange and colorful characters attracted to the pipeline. "Pipe Dreams" is the first production by Gladys' second husband, Barry Hankerson, who spent 2 years preparing the project and raising the $2-million budget. The Pips Gladys' brother Merald, cousins William Guest and Edward Patten don't appear in the movie but the group will sing background music. The rating? "We're hoping for a PG," said Gladys. "I wouldn't want anything less than that; whatever I do in my career, I want it to be something my children can be proud of." She has three, ages 13, 12, and 6, and in August expects another.

The long years of midnight bus rides to one-night stands haven't robbed Gladys of her earnestness to succeed. Hers has been a varied career, starting at age 4 in Atlanta, Ga. With her brother and cousins she toured the South as the Pips, appearing with Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke and other performers. Being a minor celebrity was an unsettling experience for a sensitive young girl, who had to endure the taunts of jealous schoolmates. "I hated being able to sing," she recalled.

"I even prayed to God to take my voice away, so I wouldn't have to be singled out as someone different." Her attitude changed midway through high school, when she began singing with a jazz band and a sympathetic teacher introduced her to the artistry of Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn. When she graduated from high school, she and the boys took off for the music jungle of New York. The first hit came in 1961 with "Every Beat of My Heart." Not much else happened, and Gladys retired to be a wife and mother. She was back in a couple of years, and as Gladys Knight and the Pips, th group began to pick up steam. By DICK KLEINER HOLLYWOOD Darleen Carr seems to have it made. She is a beautiful young woman, possessed of dazzling eyes and smile. She has a crystal clear singing voice. And she has an eternally happy disposition. The only thing she doesn't have is the time to ride the horse who started the whole thing.

Darleen springs from the musical Farnon and Oeh-man Her father, Brian Farnon, is the conductor at Harrah's Tahoe. Two uncles are conductors, too. Her mother was Rita Oehman, one half of a singing act called the Oehman Twins. Two older sisters, Shannon and Charmian, were in show business first. Charmian played the oldest Trapp child, Liesl, in "The Sound of Music." When Darleen was 13, she sang like a bell.

And the producers of "The Sound of Music" heard her and used her voice in the film it is Darleen who does most of the high notes for the children and the nuns in that movie. After that there were offers to do other things. The big reason she took the ones she did was to make enough money to buy a horse. "I was crazy about horses," she says. "I always wanted to have my own.

And in a year or so I did buy one. His name was Jody. He was wonderful. Only problem was that I got so busy I had no time to ride That condition still persists, and it is likely to get worse before it gets better. At the moment Darleen Carr plays Karl Maiden's daughter on ABC's "The Streets of San Francisco." It's a recurring part and she Sas averaged about six ppearances a year over the past few years.

But now Quinn Martin, who produces Streets, has also put her in the pilot of one of his new shows, a Western called "The Deputies." DARLEEN CARR "They have arranged it so that, if The Deputies sells," she says, "I'll do both shows. I'll split my time between the two of them" One of her first jobs after "The Sound of Music" was at Universal. It was that studio which decided her real name Farnon was too difficult to pronounce. So she took the name of Carr, which her big sister Charmian had pioneered. Charmian, incidentally, is still active, mostly in the area of commercials.

She is married and a mother though, so she doesn't do t6o much. Darleen is deep into metaphysics, particularly something called "the science of mind." She studies, she teaches, she practices. It must be working, because she is one of the sunniest people in town. She's even happy about her recent separation from her husband, Jason Laskay. "I was married for two years," she says, "and we just separated.

I'm happy about that and so is he." Church Family The 22 sons and daughters of a Dutch theologian, Cornelius Jansen, became priests and nuns..
