Yellowjackets here Saturday night Stevi which watched its state tournament hopes crushed by an up set a year ago avenged that disap pointment convincingly by trouncing the Whitefish Bulldogs 7545 in the finals of the Western A Divisional basketball meet It was the initial state Class A tourney berth for Stevensville which entered Class A ranks four years ago Whitefish which has been to the state meet nearly every year the past decade now must get past Loyola Monday night in the chal lenge game The tilt will start at 7:50 at lathead Gymnasium "I'm really happy for the kids" said a happy coach lack Slovens of his victorious 'Jackets "They're a great bunch of kids and they've waited a long time for this" The Yellowjackets didn't wait very long before they proved their obvious superiority the Electric City matmen dominated the finals category was limited to compulsory exercises Cara Nodding of West won two in dividual first places in balance beam and vault with Kelly Neal grabbing first in unevens and Shelley Chauvin in floor exercise West a sweep in floor ex ercise led by Chauvin's 1830 score with Neal Nodding and Cindy Reather in order Neal took highest point honors for the lathead Braves completed the Kalispell portion of their prep basketball careers here Saturday afternoon as the Western AA co champions raced past Helena Capital 84 67 in a non league game played before 2000 partisan fans The triumph was the 12th straight this season on the home court and gave the Braves a 16 4 record for the regular season the best mark of coach Jack McWhorter's career at lathead High Senior guard Bill McMaster led the upperclassmen with 18 points and his usual strong floor game handing out seven assists Mc Master who played just one season at lathead after two years at Columbia alls will nevertheless be remembered as one of the finest guards ever to play at lathead Senior Craig Zanon closed out his home career in typically brilliant style firing in 16 points and grabbing 17 rebounds before retiring early in the fourth quarter last two points on a pair of foul shots midway through the third quarter gave him an even 400 for the 1976 77 season for an average of 20 per game Randy Bostic who saw mainly JV action a year ago closed out a solid senior campaign by hitting 12 points The other senior 6 2 forward Dave Olson chipped in with seven points and plenty of aggressive play at both ends of the court After toying with hapless Helena High the previous afternoon the Braves were forced to take the Capital Brains more seriously The Brains actually led on a few occa sions the last time at 21 20 early in the second quarter But with Dave Olson and Dave Heine each scoring three point plays and with reserves Charlie Remington Brian Shirtlif and Dave Holliday getting timely baskets the Braves pulled away to a 46 35 half tir le lead McMaster hit 12 points and Zanon added eight during the first 16 minutes In the third quarter lathead out scored Helena 18 7 over the first five minutes as Zanon scored eight points and McMaster added two long baskets Midway through the quarter however the Bruins erupted for eight unanswered points to remain in contention Capital got within 68 58 early in the fourth period before McMaster Bositc and Dave Olson scored con secutive baskets to re establish a comfortable lead Lance Johnson a 6 7 senior center led all scorers with 19 points Capital proved a far worthier op ponent than Helena High which suc cumbed 95 72 riday afternoon The Braves bolted to a 12 0 lead after three minutes and only continual substitution by McWhorter made the final score respectable Zanon had one of his biggest nights as a Brave getting 28 points and 22 rebounds in about three quarters of court action Two of his points were tallied on a powerful dunk shot his first of the season He canned 11 of 14 shots from the field as the team shot better than 55 per cent McMaster added 20 points and a handful of assists while junior forwards Dennis Olson and Shirtliff each tossed in 14 points It was a career high for the 6 6 Shirtliff who has gained confidence in the past few weeks McWhorter agreed that his team played well offensively in its season finales main concern was to finish as winners to keep momen tum and to stay away from injuries We accomplished that and now ready for The Braves will leave Thursday
