Shep was rollin back to town Sunday night from an unsuccessful deer hunt near Kaycee when he swears) he saw a mallard take off from the mist-shrouded oiled highway Just north of Midwest. The car was brought to a screeching halt, Shep leaped out and banged away. The duck dived back to the pavement where it was successfully retrieved without the aid of a dog. Evidently, explains Shep. the duck had mistaken the shiny, oled highway for a stretch of water.

UP) Venice longs for the tourists of a golden yesteryear. A nostalpsic "now, before the war is the invariable conversational gambit of all who. in happier da vs. catered to the thousands from every land lured to this water-set Jewtl among cities. The withered old lady in St.

Mark's Square who peddles tiny cornucopias of grain for the pirouetting pigeons, the ancient photographer who for a few lire will picture you smothered in the pigeons, the venerable guides with their encyclopedic lore about the 120 "doges" dukes of the Venetian reDublic. the gondoliers nodding beneath the Bridge of Sighs all shake their heads sadly and say: "If only the tourists would come back!" Here, as in perhaps no other Italian city spared the devastation of war. there is bitter, articulate, highly personalized resentment against Benito Mussolini and his Fascists for taking Italy into World war II. That is partly because Venice, historically international of outlook, finds repugnant the narrow nationalism of Fascist adventure: but more because the Venetians, practical folk, have been sorely wounded in their pocketbooks. An oddity that may win a drink at a bar: How many "canals" are there in Venice? Answer: Not 160, as most guidebooks will tell you, but just one.

the Grand canal, which serpentines through Venice from Piazzale Roma where the automobile highway ends) to Stf Mark's Square. All the other waterways are, strictly, "Rii" the plural of the old Italian word meaning "rivulet" or "brooks" which persists in the Spanish as the specific word for "river." FCC Grants Authority For Transmission Lines AT THE Employes at the White Eagle refinery have heard reports that the company plans to build a "cat plant" there sometime in the near future, perhaps in 1947. A "cat plant," in the language of refinery operators, is a catalytic cracking plant, similar to the unit being completed at the Texas refinery, and scheduled for the Standard next year. Officially, however, the management of the Socony-Vacuum Oil at Kansas City, states it is "not yet able to release any announcement or a story regarding plans for our Casper operations." Some items police would like to know: Who switched fur coats at a recent Country club party or was it a switch? Who took the money out of the till at the Legion club recently? from Cradle to College Oi Mr. and Mrs.
