loves neither the truth nor myself has been codling your credulity for there is not one word of truth in the statement you publish as emanant from me that I have called you a l' and have threatened to ttarve you out I conceive that if I had actually made use of the words at tributed to me it would be a' matter of very little consequence to you and of vastly less to your readers and would hardly be worth the extended notice you give of a pure fabrication or both yourself and your readers must know very well that it is not my busi ness to feed you This duty iss a matter of lau incumbent upon xne Town Board of the town where you re side as eiofficio poortnasters and not upon a town or county attorney But waving this slight misunderstanding of yours I will remark that if it were within my line of duty or if as a pri vate citizen I were in the grocery and provision business I would gladly fill your trough with fodder whenever it was empty These are my real senti ments towards you You appear to have a false notion of my feelings in this respect which appears to make you feel very bad I am exceedingly anx ious to set you right upon this question of my regard for you or 1 should not write this letter Please use your com mon sense for one moment and we will readily agree that the use of the epi thets referred to would imply intense Hi hrltAVA iq vnnr idna of UttllCU AU vw i the cause and occasion of their utter ance Now ray dear fellow I never did now and could not irTthe future consistently hate you I feel too grateful for the valuable notoriety your paper has given me and too appreciative of the consequences flowing therefrom to entertain any but the kindest feelings for its publisher I truly feel under the deepest obligations to yourself and Mr Nels Hill for a great deal1 of very valuable advertising and not? hasten to make my du acknowledgements for it Mr affidavits and your editorials thy friends assure me (and I do not i doubt tbeir judgment in this matter) have contributed to my success politi cally on two important occasions in the past much more than all the aid of the non committal Standard or the self serving court house ring Therefore why should I hate you or want to starve vou out Mr efforts had a much larger circulation it is true than your paper but were not so nu merous lengthy nor recent as yours and for these reasons gladly yield you the palm of preference over Mr Hill trusting that you will wear the compli ment with becoming modesty at least in the presence of Mr Hill Perhaps you would be better satis fied of my tender regard for you if the legal advertising of my law firm went into your paper along with the adver tising of all the other law firms in town But really this is not my fault and I should not make vicarious atonement for the sins of another I assure you that am not at all responsible for this slight diversion from the current of gaf printing that flows to you The fact is I have a partner who like has a will of his own and mv amiable partner has a big brother who is also in the priming business Now while I would gladly help you to a decent share of our legal printing I am overruled by the irrepressible in favor of Brother Dan I regret that the situation is not otherwise for I am reallv under many more obligations to your paper than to Brother pa per Since the last election corpses have been buried and proper requiems (paid for out of the campaign fund) sung over their graves The Standard has hardly noticed my existence or if it has manifested such knowledge has done so in such a cold formal matter of fact way as does me no good This is the way The Standard satisfies an ancient grudge it has against me 'But not so the Enterprise that vigorous journal is determined that its readers shall know that I still and am of importance enough to move itsmajes tio spleen to heights of indigna tion even though election is over Can vou doubt for a moment that I leel where the measure of my obligation lies? you see that I am in a peculiar situation That I am ground between the upper nnd nether jaws of that mighty leviathan the reeborn county press The cold unmovable silence of The Standard above and the active facetious murmuring of the Enterprise below grinding my reputation as an ox or ass would grind its cud The upper jaw claims more respect because it is nearer the brains but its passionless unconcern about my affairs woundi mywide far more than the lively spitting and chewing of the lower chop It is all right just as it should be If I get a two line puff as a nnd able attorney like the oiner law yers who have no Jorkins as part ners am still considerate enough to be thankful for a ten line personal al though you call me pct names and publish me to the world as bad a sinner as the rest of fallen race yet I am grateful for the notoriety particularly since I pay nothing for it These remarks are all introductory to the assertion which I emphatically repeat never called you a hound 1 claim credit for more dicrimination than that Abound of course has hispeculiarities so indeed have you butoch quite different in its kind and I think I understand the difference Recalling to mind the fact that the week before you assailed the Probate Judge and Sheriff you claimed their printing and upon their refusal to com ply with your claim threatened to go for them and beat them for office when ever they run again I should not as did your victims compare you to a mercenary blackmailer like Moulton and Woodhull but knowing your abil ity to carry out your threats' your con fidence in your power to do what you please with fragile human character and your manifest self abandon to the work I would rather compare you to a very small puppy that gambols in the sun beams and kicks up his heels at human nature generally as if the big world and sunshine to boot were made alone for him to dance and caper in If 1 were required to look further for illustrations of your nature among the animal king dom I might considering your power of suction and suoceas in absorbing help and patronage frouj all respectable lawyers compare you to a very yo tin EvXRYTUINO required in the shape of uu to entertain the opinion that I have some influence with the court house ring This is an egregious mistake ana you should not attribute the unkind treatment you may Ijaye received from any member of that conclave to me The truth is the court house ringatera lave me much less than than they do you and never trouble uie for advice ex cept when impeached or in legal diffi culty To convince you that this is reallv so would remind you of some advice I gave those gentlemen once concerning yourself You remember 1 of course that just prior to your coming here you were soliciting pecuniary aid from Charley Gilbert and other members of the ring wnerewitn to start your paper which was to neip mem very much vij aavice nd the matter and I frankly told them that beggars were never that if they started a newspaper they must koepit running that it was poor policy to give money to a newspaper before it was earned that as soon as the precedent was established it must be kept up or dog like the donee would bite the extended hand of the donor as soon as it found it empty My advice as you know was not followed for you immediately thereafter borrowed $100 from each of four members nf the I great and good as you call it You must not take exceptions to the character of my advice I know you then Now I am glad that these four nngsters tnougnt mure own opinion than of mine Perhaps they think so too or will when they get their money back But since then I oJvtsA them do more Upon one other matter I trust there may be no future misunderstanding I am not interested either for myself or in the coming spring elec tion and you can have the office of Town providing you can get votes enough I interfere with your aspirations at all I would not have interterea list time mu i mown you wanted the office so bad and had it not been for But let me suggest that yon deserve better at the hands of the dear people Please recollect that all the present ring officers are not candi dates for re election next fall They have promised to retire and of course they will keep their promises Now this will be your golden opportunity Here your integrity and adhesion to agreat principle will receive its windows so that the celler will he wel aired remove all rubbish from about the doors and keep everything clean about the house and you will do much to prevent fever A Wedge Board of Health I A Misunderstanding We learn that a number ot Scandi navians are greatly incensed at the con duct of a party of young men from this town who were detailed by the Board of He alth to bury the bodies of those children who recently died of scarlet fever We believe that by gen eral consent they were to be buried in the Lutheran cemetery grounds in Ban croft The complaint is we believe that the young men drove their team into the burial enclosure notwithstanding the protest of the grave digger after which they went to the church near by and forced an entrance to that also Both of which are claimed to be acts of violation to the Lutherans they holding the church and grounds to bo sacred places The boys offer this explanation They did not know that tho driving into tho enclosure or entering the building was doing violence to any re ligious prejudice or rule of tho Church The day waR cold and they were cold when reaching the ground As the children had died from a contagious disease they did not think it proper to enter any private dwelling and there fore sought shelter in the church while the man in charge of the cemetery was completing the digging of the graves We understand that the boys who say they meant no offense are willing to offer a suitable apology and we trust the matter may be amicably settled This Advertisements Thompson Tilton having completed their shoe shop commence
