Paul Castree, as the doomed Bobby telegraphs his demise from the moment he walks on stage and also gets saddled with the most obvious number in the show, "Tragedy." i Bryan Batt injects some fleeting moments of humor into the evening as the, lewd disco dance instructor Monty. Fun is in such short supply that even Tony's volatile home life, played very broadly, gets laughs. Designer Robin Wagner's giant sets are just as cold as the show, although his massive backdrop of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, traversed by tiny automobiles, is visually striking. Undoubtedly, "Saturday Night Fever" will run. Its advance sale has passed the $20 million mark.

For many people, the fact that the musical recalls the movie will be more than enough. Those looking for a genuine theater experience will have to search elsewhere. Her big production numbers look like gym class at the local high school. Paige Price, a seductive Stephanie, moves with style, but she and Carpinello display little chemistry, either on or off the dance floor. Vocally, Orfeh, who portrays the forlorn Annette, dominates the show with pipes that blast their way through "If I Can't Have You." The Bee Gees' memorable score was an important part of the movie's success.

It was never sung by the characters, but was heard on the soundtrack as musical commentary to what was happening on screen. Now, the characters sing these classics, and some of the pairings of people and songs are just wrongheaded. For example, when the two would-be lovers decide to just be friends, they break into "How Deep is Your Love," the oddest song placement in the musical. I 'Saturday Night Fever' on Broadway By Michael Kuchwara Associated Press NEW YORK When John Travolta strutted down a Brooklyn street more than two decades ago in the opening sequence of "Saturday Night Fever," a star was born and disco had the movie that would keep it in the public's consciousness for the next 20 years. Cashing in on that memory, mov ie producer Robert Stigwood has transferred "Fever" to the stage first in London, where it has been running since May 1 998.

and now on Broadway, where the musical swiveled into the Minskoff Theater on Thursday and promptly tripped over its tight, flared, polyester pants and platform heels. In turning "Saturday Night Fever" into a theater piece, something has been lost. That's surprising since adapter Nan Knighton seems to have lifted large chunks of dialogue directly from the film. What she has removed, though, are its heart and soul. This cold "Fever" is for people who want a live-action postcard of the motion picture.

The story is there, but it hasn't been translated with any stagecraft that would make it a viable theatrical entity in its own right. With James Carpinello, Paige Price, Orfeh, Paul Castree. Minskoff Theater, N6w York City. store; at night, he's king of the dance floor. Tony is a cocky lad, spurning the advances of Annette, who moons over him with an intensity that is downright scary. He's also the leader of a loose-knit group of guys, whose insecurities match his own.

Tony finds his machismo challenged when he meets Stephanie, an older woman (well, by a year or two anyway) who has a job in fabled Manhattan, working for a record producer. She considers herself a woman of the world, but her fears and frustrations are just as big as Tony's. The movie sweetly depicted their halting relationship, with Travolta and Karen Lynn Gorney beautifully playing off each other. As Broadway's Tony Manero, James Carpinello has a tough act to follow. As anyone knows who saw his performance in off-Broadway's "Stupid Kids," Carpinello can command a stage.

He has a more difficult time here. The wiry actor sings modestly and, what's worse, is a cautious dancer, making all the struts, swivels, kicks and splits look hard rather than easy. Director and choreographer Arlene Phillips has devised dances that are more aerobic than inspired. singers who find their inspiration in American rock'n'roll and doo-wop. Cort.
