Shopping for a puppy ofT a kitten, or any other pet, is not like dashing out for a pair of gloves or a tie at the last moment.

The pet will be much better off and the new owner far more satisfied if the purchase of a gift pet is planned well in advance. It seems to us even a very good idea to bring the new pet home several days before Christmas. A puppy or a kitten is bewildered enough in new, strange surroundings under normal conditions. When he is in the midst of ail the confusion and noise of the cheery holiday, it's more than doubly hard on him. Such a frightening experience right at the start may make a puppy a shy dog, the kitten nervous and fearful.

Early Arrival And after all, the early arrival of a Christmas pet can easily be explained. Santa Claus often has to make early deliveries, especially of live pets, because he is so busy on Christmas Eve. Besides, the family will have more time to prepare for the pet who is brought in a week or so before Christmas, such as having a bed and proper food on hand. Then when the holiday comes, the pet is accustomed to his changed environment, his new home, and he can either snooze calmly through the excitement or join in the fun. It isn't too early to start shopping for the Christmas pet.

If you are buying a puppy, visit the kennels. Don't be insulted if the kennel owner won't let you handle the pups. In fact, you shouldn't attempt to, especially it you ve been visiting other kennels. The same goes for catteries. Germs can easily be carried, and often whole litters are wiped out through sickness brought in by visitors.

So when the manager refuses to let you fondle the pups or kittens, try to understand it's for the best interests of the animals in his care. Rushing out on Christmas Eve to buy a pet at the first place you find not only prohibits time for these important preparatory measures, but it may also make you the victim of unscrupulous dealers, or pet racketeers, who pass off mongrels as purebreds at "bargain" rates. Another good idea is to purchase a book on the pet you give or bring into your home for Christmas. There are many good books at various prices. The new owner will appreciate your thoughtfulness in adding a book and the pet will appreciate it, too.

Many people are entirely unprepared to care for a live pet. They want to do the right thing, but they just don't know how. Before planning any gifts of live animals, the giver should be very careful to make sure the pet is wanted and there is someone in the household willing to give it proper care. Don't just try to please the whim of a child. Make sure the parents want it, too.
