THE STANDARD. -i- From the Rural New Ywkfr. riauiiMf mm t'etllairw sf Orchard. Fruit culture lias tuale enoruuAio roosi in thesa United Btates within thtf Rural's remembrance. We believe the limit i by no meini reached uor Mill be until lUe bost fruit ul all varieties Li iUo4 iUiljr on tLe tables of evert family poor as well a rich througUut the couutry.

Tliia in what wo aro aiming Tr ami it ia in this 1oih that we rejoice at the iacreaae in nam-bera and busluami of ourtsery men, propagators of new varieties, fruit dealer. suJ even the touch abused fruit isee peddlers, who have io their way done wore good than harm by introducing fruit where uthr agencies would not li ave reached. It may be thst the coming abundance of frius is to be brought h. th introduction of new and more productive varieties, as the Wilson's Albany hat partially done smonj strawberries, the Concord among grapes, the Baldwin Among Apples, the Uartlett andScckel among peart. Varieties ao easily and cheaply grown encourage propagation and encourage planting ttill aaoro.

If we can get varietiea more easily grown, more productive, and of production will be atill more marked than it bat been. After all, the tact is not in nurseries to propagate nor of enthusiastic growers to plant, 1 The yearly production of nursery stock, apples, pears, peaches, ctterrie, plurns, quinces and grape vines, to say nothing of the smaller fruits, is something enormous. If all lived and bore fruit to their utmost capacity it would be impossible to nod a market. The fruit would fall so low as to Wdlv worth picklo. No one such a result at thia for the reason that under the present manage-went of.

fruit orchards, four trees out of flvty possibly nine treea out of ten, never reach, the site to bear a full crop, mnM than half of them never bear at all, and all the (money, time and labor expended on them is a total loss. Look tthaarrle orchards of the country. many of them young trees half planted in a stiff aod, only by browsing cattle and horses in summer, girdled by rabbits and mice in winter, honey-combed by the borer, their trunks barked by the team in plowing and their roots cut by deep plowing Iait any wonder that so "jnany trees die? Is not the wonder greater that fttir treea so treated should live If we can induce a sensible and careful management of orchards it will be doing more for fruit grewing than any thing else could do. It is not that trees require extremely rich soil or very ereai labor in cuitiva tintr but what they do ueodthev mutt have. Manure iniadiciously 'applied may do injury.

If large amounts of fermenting manure are plowed under and placed in contact with the pear roots it makes the roots unhealthy and the trees subject to blight. Our im pressionis that the decaying matter creates a fungus on the pear roots which infects the sap and thus carried the tree. It ia probable that certain roots feed special parts of the tree, hence we rarefy aee an entile tree affected at first, though this is some times the case. The more common re suit ia one or more branches first affect ed and the disease rapidly spreading until the tree dies. Yet nothing is more certain than that the pear trees need some manuring.

How shall it be applied? The method adopted by some of the most experienced fruit growers in western lore is to spread manure already rottd on the surface of the ground in early winter fall and let the Tains and snows carry its fertilizing properties downwards to the'roots. In this way there is no fey mentation in contact with the roots; but the fertilizing properties of: the manure come in the best to be taken into the circulation lhe ground may be plowed in the spring, or the manure left as a mulch through the summer. Some pear growers leave their treea in crass. If this is cut and left on the crround as a mulch it will promote growth and thrift. -Anything which keeps the soil loose and moist snd fertile is good.

This is rarely done where the soil is left in grass and hence this for averacre fruit growers is not an advisable method of caring for orch ards. Km) your different kinds of stock in separate fields and yards; its the only wife way. Fine wool being only forty-four cents a pound, lower than since 1857, it is wia to abut ud merino rams for the season and cross with Cotswold. In making whiffietrees, they will be stronger if the front side of the whiffle tree is nearest the heart timber and the backside toward the bark: they retain their shape longer if the timber be snlit in this across the grain of the wood. Milch cowt don't thrink in milk except they are under fed.

Therefore, as the pastures are almoat used up, feed as much as two quarts of meal and bran daily to each cow. Toor economy to starve a cow now snd waste food in filling her up in spring. Everything about the grsnaries and corn-cribs should be made safe against vermin. Several cats may be fed at the cost of one dog, and they earn their feed far more profitably. Make holes where they can get in and out of the buildings snd under them, but a foot or more above the ground, that skunks may not take possession.

The best time to cut bard wood for durability is early winter befors ths sap bas thought of moriog. December is far better than February, snd No ember or even October, often better than later. During ths latter part of the growing season those ubstances which, with access of water, form and enrich the sap, are produced in ths wood. They gradually become soluble as the winter ad ranees, and befors spring fairly opens (trees Tsrring considerably in time) are ia soluble con dition, snd taxing ths soil for water to carry them op to erery twig aud swelling bud. If cut thus, when filled with water or when full of soluble substances, the durability of tLe timber is much less than whn these substances srs in a chiefly insoluble ss they are in the autumn.

The above indicates a general principle. It may, howerer, be considerably modified in practice. For many trees may be cut in full leaf eren ahortly after midsummer to good advantage. For firewood it is important to eut soon after the leaves XalL A correspondent of the Building Jfews says: "Nothing csn be better to exclude rats than to concrete the surface of the ground beneath wood floors not only for this, but slo to prevent, ss well, damp rising. AU ground floors, whether wood, pared or tiled, should hare layer of concrete, three inches to four inches thick, between them and the soiL I bare been in the habit of doing this for yesrs, snd all auch houses hare dry floors, snd sre rrrmin proof, as far ss the latter sre concerned, ss rats cannot disturb well msde concrete.
