Smith early Texas wildcat oil operator, pioneer in the book match industry and one time mayor of Bainbridge, Ohio, died yesterday in a hospital after long illness. He was 76. He was born in Bainbridge and, 19, was elected the youngest mayor in Bainbridge history after the Ohio Legislature passed a special bill reducing minimum age limits. Smith went to the young Southeast Texas oil fields in 1918.

Within months he and a partner drilled the first successful well in Batson, Hardin County, bringing in the productive Batson Field. He continued in the oil business as wildcatter and independent operator both In Southeast Texas and the Wichita Falls arta until 1931. when he moved to Pallas. He joined the Star Match Company of St. Louis, predecessor of the University Match and rose to national sales manager.
