They say people in the community have encouraged them "to rebuild. The blaze that destroyed the Tuel Shed five months ago was started by a cigarette thrown in a restroom wastebackeL When the 70-year-old building was lost, the Tuels opened a new bar in the adjacent community hall, which they also own. Wahpeton airport getting longer mirway WAIIPETON (AP) The airport here is getting a longer runway.

Gerry Beck with Tri-State Aviation said the main runway at Harry Stern Airport is being extended by 600 feet, making it about 5,000 feet long. The project, which includes a taxiway, is being done to accommodate an increasing number of small business jets using the airport, Beck said. Federal funding is covering most of the $12 million cost. Work is slated to begin this week and wrap up by the end of summer. Winona, gave birth to Lewis' child Joseph Lewis DeSrnet Iletcher's family has drawn up a family tree spanning seven generation's.

At the top are two names: Lewis and Ikpsapewia One piece of evidence is a photocopy of DeSmet's adult baptismal certificate in 1874, which lists his parents as Meriwether Lewis and Winona. "At first, it was passed down through oral history'. That's what 1 believe and mv family believes," Fletcher said. ''Then we discovered a treasure trove of old documents. The certificate was a new find." The papers include letters written in Lakota that Fletcher thinks could provide more information after he gets them translated.

Fletcher said Lewis and Clark journals refer to "offers of wives that ere made to the explorers. He said he hones his family's efforts and records will help substantiate ties to Lewis. But he added that he is not trving to convince anyone or push it on others. Hetcher, a Lower Brule Sioux Tribe fish and wildlife conservation officer, said he expects to be involved when South Dakota commemorates the Lewis and Clark expedition's bicentennial next year, possibly as a tour guide. DcSmet, who died in 1889, is buried at St Alban Cemetery on the Lower Brule Indian Reservation.

"My aunt told us we were direct descendants of Meriwether Lewis," Fletcher's uncle, I larry Thompson, of New I lamp-shire, said while visiting the grave. "It did mean something to us at the time, but not as much as it does now. 1 feel proud. It makes me feel good." DeSmet's original name was Turkey Head, given because he had a long, skinny neck, said Thompson, who grew up at Lower Brule. LOWER BRULE, SDl (AP) If the inscription on the gravestone of Sheldon Fletcher's great-great-great grandfather is correct, I letcher is related to history.

According to the headstone, Joseph Lewis DeSmet's father was Meriwether Lewis, one-half of the famous Lewis and Clark team that led an expedition across the central and western portions of what is now the United States 200 years ago. The expedition passed through what is now North Dakota. I listory books don't talk about Lewis fathering a child in South Dakota. But the story has been handed down through five generations of Iletcher's family. "A lot of Lewis and Clark scholars will say it didn't happen." said Fletcher, 32.

"That doesn't bother me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I don't get worked up over it." Ancestral accounts say an American Indian woman named lkpsapewin, also known as Fargo area police look to nonlethal weaponry FARGO (AP) More law enforcement officers in the Fargo-Moorhead area soon will be sporting stun guns. The West Fargo Police Department recently bought six Tasers, devices that give out an electrical shock that momentarily freezes a person's muscles. Police Chief Arland Ras-mussen said the department used a grant ana private donations to cover the $3,600 cost.

"We've been looking at less lethal force issues for a while," Rasmussen said. He said that by using the devices, officers can avoid fist fights or the use of pepper spray, which he said can cause pain to an offender for an extended period of time. Fargo Police Chief Chris Magnus said his department plans to buy 25 of the devices. Police in neighboring Moorhead, have used them for years. Steve Tuttle, director of government affairs for Scottsdale, Ariz.

-based Taser International said electricity does not linger in the body, and the stun guns are safe. People can get hurt only if they fall on something after being shocked, he said. The devices are used by more than 3,000 police departments nationwide, Tuttle said. West Fargo police Detective Duane Sail said he has been zapped numerous times during training sessions. "Its like a Dee sting," he said.

The guns leave a mark equivalent to a bad mosquito bite, Sail said. Rasmussen said all officers who use the stun guns must take a mandatory four-hour training session. They also are required to be zapped, so they know how it feels. Rasmussen said West Fargo officers have used the stun guns three times in the two months they have carried them. Dlawar Irfan, a professor from Sulaimaniya, Iraq, who has helped Strzok with earlier relief efforts, said people probably would take better care of the equipment if they had to buy it. Mustafa Abdulbaqi, a civil engineer from northern Iraq who also has worked with Strzok in the past, expects groups of farmers will pool their resources to buy equipment "In many villages, people are relatives," he said.

(AP) Peter Strzok thinks the Midwest's old sheds and barns contain something that could help Iraq's shaky economy: farm equipment. The Washburn man started a campaign this month to collect old garden tillers and farm equipment for shipment to Iraqi farmers. He plans to collect the equipment in Ashland, recondition it with the help of volunteers and truck it to Duluth, for transfer to ships.

He hopes to send his first shipment by September. Even small, basic equipment could boost crop yields significantly in Iraq, said Scnwan Rashid, an accountant in Des Moines, Iowa, who grew up farming in northern Iraq and has family there. Many Iraqi farmers still use hand tools and a few animals to do almost all their field work.
