PAGE FOUR. NEWS OF SLEMP IS RENOMINATED. Hr Dniiufiorfv Rnll MoOSa Candidate. Defeated in Sixth Virginia District. Bristol, Aug.

the stormiest convention in the history of the Ninth Virginia district, held here, the Republicans last night renominated C. Bascom Slemp, on the first ballot, having received 408 out a total of 678 votes. The Mooses made an earnest effort to nominate Dr. J. M.

Dougherty, of Scott county, and it was sought repeatedly to stampede the convention in his favor, but when it was seen that all efforts to have the name of Slemp withdrawn, because of the representative's expressed wish, most of the Mooses voted for him and Dougherty received only 93 votes. The other men who were voted for were: J. Wilson McGavock of Wythe county; S. Pendleton, of Scott county; Roland E. Chase, of Dickenson county, and George W.

Litz, of Wise county. J. L. Einstein, of Pulaski county, declared that it would be a mistake to nominate Slemp. He said that the Republicans of his county were opposed to him and that they would not support him if nominated.

He declared that not in 15 years had the Democrats had such a chance to win the district as now. The convention indorsed the administration without mention of Taft's name. Charles S. Pendleton was temporary chairman and A. T.

Lincoln, of Smythe county, permanent chairman. DEATH OF MAX GUGGENHEIMER. Lynchburg, Aug. Guggenheimer, aged 70 years, the father of Lynchburg's wholesale business and of her shoe factories, died yesterday morning at the Hotel Netherland, New York, after an illness which attacked him some weeks ago at Carlsbad. He came here in 1856 from Bavarin.

Three years later he was a charter member of the home guard and at 19 entered the Confederate army and fought throughout the war. He then returned to Lynchburg and established the largest retail dry goods business in the State, which he closed out to start the wholesale concern of Guggenheimer Co. He founded the shoe concern of Craddock Terry and of the George D. Witt Company; was president of the cotton mills and a bank director. He was elected to the city council, redeemed its finances, started paved streets and better schools.

He was a leading Mason and at one time president of the Jewish congregation. In 1877 he married Bertha V. Rosenburg, of Richmond, who survives him. They had one daughter, Cecile, who died and in whose memory they deeded the city playgrounds and a kindergarten which they endowed. Some people practice economy, but neglect to learn it.

C. i Phone, Main 7022. nxmasxmcaxmmxmcwcmaaomitx THE OLD 1 MOSBY REUNION. Survivors of Famous Band on Anniversary of 2D Bull Run. Groveton, in Prince William county, was today the scene of the eighteenth annual reunion of "Mosby's men," who, under the leadership of Col.

John S. Mosby, were a source of terror to the Union troops in Maryland and Northern Virginia fifty years ago. Formal exercises marked the ceremonies. It was exactly fifty years ago today that the second battle of Bull Run was fought, and it was in this conflict that Col. Mosby's band of cavalry did such effective work.

The leader of these raiders attended only one of these reunions, and that the first, eighteen years ago. Col. Mosby is at present writing a book about his part in the great civil conflict. Col. Mosby was recently retired from the Department of Justice be-1 cause of his age.

He is 75 years of age. Although he was the greatest source of annoyance to Gen. Grant, at the close of the war the distinguished Northern leader said that he could find no fault with Mosby in spite of the fact that he had a narrow escape from capture by him. In one of Gen. Grant's works the author praised Mosby in the highest terms for his valor and daring.

"There were probably but few men in the South," he writes, "who could have commanded successfully a separate detachment of men in the rear of an opposing army, and so near the border of hostilities, as long as he did without losing his entire command." Funeral of J. G. Moncure. Fredericksburg, Aug. funeral of Thomas J.

She gave her name as Mattie O'Connor, and said that she was originally from Culpeper, but had been living for some time in Spottsylvania. Last Monday night about 10 o'clockwhen most of the inmates of the house had retired, the young mother took her baby and quietly slipped away. Shortly after midnight the infant was found in this city.
