ALEXANDRIA. FRIDAY EVENING-, AUGTTSr 18, 18G5 Volume LXXI bom? jj Number 170. PUBLISHED (DAILY) BY GAR SN OWDEN, Sr 104, King street, over French's Book Store. Advertisements and Subscriptions received at the Printing Office; or at Edgar Snow den's Office, corner of Xing and Boyal streets, over J. Dry Goods store.

of cents per month or Six dollars per annum, payable in advance. Advertisements inserted at the usual rates. HEWS BY TO-DAY' MAIL. Wall street was calmer yesterday. The excitement produced by the announcement of the Ketchum defalcations had, in a measure, subsided, and holders of the forged gold certificates declared that Mr.

Morris Ketchum was able and willing to make good their This is somewhat doubtful, however, as at a rough estimate the total defalcations are supposed to amount to $4,000,000. The largest losers are Ketchum Charles Graham, the Importers' and Trader's National Bank, and the Fourth National Bank. General Alexander Cummings, of Philadelphia, has been appointed Governor and ex officio superintendent of Indian affairs of the Territory of Colorado. Major General A. E.

Hovey has been appointed by the President Minister to Peru, and left Wednesday night for New York, from which point he will sail immediately for South America. A despatch from New York says: "A party of thirty negroes from the South passed through the city to day en route for Rhode Island, where homes have been provided for them by the Freedmen's Bureau. The Ex press says this is the second party of negroes thus sent to Rhode Island at the Government expense. The New York Evening Post says, "It needs not another summer like the present to drive all self respecting people from such places as Saratoga. They do not like to expose their sons to the temptations, to acquaint them with the modes of life, or to place them in the company of those who take the lead in the prevalent fashionable riots." It is stated that the Secretary of the Treasury has determined to place three revenue cutters in the waters of the lower Chesapeake, extend ing from the Capes to the Nansemond river, to keep a strict look out for and prevent smug gliog, much of which is alleged to be now done.

Dwelling Houses in the North Carolina correspondence of the Cincin. nati Gazette says: The dwelling houses of the South present a strange appearance in their furniture and household equipments. Every thing has been mended, and generally in the rudest style. Window glass has way to thin boards, and these are in use in railway coaches and in the cities. Furniture is marred and broken, and none has been replaced for four years.

Dishes are cemented in various styles, and half the pitchers have tin handles. A complete set of crockery is never seen, and in very few families is there enough left to set a table in a manner approaching gentility. A set of forks with whole tines is a curiosity. flocks and watches have nearly all stopped, have gone for army blankets. Pianos, where any are terribly out of tune.

Nothing, including hats, bonnets, and ladies' ana children's shoes, are nearly all home Bjade. Hair brushes and tooth brushes have a'l worn out combs are broken, and are not yet replaced; pins, needles, thread, and a thousand such articles, which seem indispensable to housekeepers, are very scarce. Even inweaving on the looms corn cobs have been substituted for spindles. Few have pocket Knives. Iq fact, everything that has hereto- an article of sale at the South is wantingnow.

The Republican State Convention in Pennsylvania have nominated General Hartranft for uditor General, and Colonel Jacob M. amPbcll, for Surveyor General. Resolutions adopted expressing confidence in the ministration of President Johnson and his policy; complimenting Gov. a 111 Secretary Stanton; recommending WnJi? property of Southern rebels to thousand dollars, with which roe to soldiers endorsing the recognizing the claims of fliers to offices of trust and honor. THE ATLANTIC CABLE.

Heart's Content, August 15, via Aspy Bay, August British war steamers Terrible and Galatia arrived at St. John's, Newfoundland, at nine o'clock on Tuesday evening, the 15th inst. The steamship Great Eastern returned to Sheerness on the 11th instant. Captain Napier reports as follows: The cable parted on Wednesday, the 2d inscant, at noon, in 1,950 fathoms of water. It was then grappled for three different times, and was raised twelve hundred, nine hundred, and six hundred fathoms respectively.

Each time the grappling hroke, but the cable remained unbroken. The Great Eastern returned to England for stronger and better grappling gear. Mr. Hartley, one of the electricians, writes most encouragingly in regard to the cable, and says: "We found no difficulty whatever in grappling the cable even in the greatest depth of water. As soon as proper tackle is pre pared, we probably commence grappling for the cable one hundred miles east of the break, where the water is only 1,500 fathoms deep.

"The buoys ride the gales well, being fast ened by pieces of the condemned cable. "Mr. Field is in good health and spirits." The Scandal Case in New letter, dated New York, on Monday, says The city itemizers this morning were big with the narrative of a case of marital scandal, the parties implicated being well known here. It is a long yarn, but here it is in a nutshell A young man about town, named Getty, whose father, now deceased, was a rich provision merchant, married, some years ago, a niece of ex President Harrison. He subsequently deserted her, and lived successively with other of these other women being a Canadian lady by the name Getty travelled extensively, but avoided this city until last week, when, discovering his presence here, the forsaken wife had him arrested, and all hands (Mrs.

Harris too) were brought into court. examination was held on Saturday, and adjourned till ro The upshot of the whole matter is, that Getty expressed sorrow for his past wickedness, discarded Mrs. Harris, and promised, like a good husband, to live in future with his own family and as this was to everybody but, the lady from Canada, farther proceedings were dropped. have this day formed a copartnership under the firm name of W.
