Stay in, tune with yourself. two other regular cast members skilled in that area: his former "SCTV" comrade Joe Flaherty (who has revived his part of Count Floyd, an ersatz variation on Dracula) and veteran comic Jonathan Winters. Short said that had it not been for the cartoon factor of the new venture, be probably would have turned down the idea of bringing Ed Grimley back to television. "If someone had asked me to do just a live-action show," he said, "I wouldn't have wanted to do Ed, for the same reason that I didn't do him in a feature film.

I just think he works well in a 4-minute sketch, and that's where his impact is the most interesting. It might have been conceivable to do him in another way, but I wasn't confident about that. "Still, in animation, it's totally different. Ed is a complicated chat acter comedically; he'll walk in one direction, then switch directions for gotten around to it, because I didn't really see what I'd be able to do. "Then, at Halloween, two kids came to the door dressed as Ed Grimley.

I thought it was strange, because it bad been a few years since 'Saturday Night plus it was on late at night, and here were these kids looking like Ed. "Also," Short continued, "during the 'SNL' days, I'd get a lot of letters from youngsters who included photos with their hair pointing straight up. That also happened a lot during because it was shown in the early evening in Canada, and one of its biggest audiences was made up of kids. Finally, I started thinking that if you stumble onto something that the kids really get into, it's a shame not to do it somewhere. When the idea came up to animate Ed, that provided me with a new medium that I could fail in, and that was intriguing tome." Moreover, the new show gives Short the chance to improvise with.

"If in live action," Short said. "Ed jumps up in the air, then comes down and just keeps walking, it's funny. It's a real-life person acting like an animated character. If you then literally animate that character, you have to wonder if you're going to take away the impact, and about what else you'll have to come up with for him. These are all the things that we're trying to figure out." that will improve the more we do it, and that's part of what's interesting to me about this." Yet another aspect that sparks Short's fascination with the "Completely Mental" approach is the fact that Ed Grimley was a flesh-and-blood cartoon to begin with.

Working on a daytime cartoon show, as opposed to a prime-time Jive-action series, is providing Short (who also appeared in the critically acclaimed comedy series, "The with a comfortable ca i Start your I right! with i Ik Thc HsJ i -S A Only one current show on network television can be labeled "completely mental," by appropriate virtue of its main character. During his days in his native Canada on the popular "SCTV" comedy series, Martin Short introduced the role of Ed Grimley, an offbeat (to say the least) fellow with greased-up, point-topped hair who best can be described as the ultimate nerd. Fans of "SCTV" came to appreciate Ed, but he really caught fire when Short joined the cast of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" during the 1984-85 season and brought Ed along. By professing his endless devotion to Pat Sajak and "Wheel of Fortune," Ed became a major pop-culture fixture. Although it has taken three years for him to reappear on a regular basis, his return comes within the framework of an intriguing new format.

"Tbe Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley" is a new NBC Saturday-morning entry that combines live-action sequences and animation, and logically enough, Short who now has a movie career as well, thanks to such films as "Innerspace," "Cross My Heart" and "Three Amigos" is an integral part of the show. "Last fall," Short said, "Hanna-Barbera bad approached me about doing a half-hour show. I had been approached before, but I just hadn't no apparent reason, so it's eccentric behavior.
