The pastor of The First Self-Righteous Church pounded his pulpit with vigor and admonished I his congregation, upon pain of eternal damnation, to bear witness to the fact that this was the only true church on the planet Earth bearing the stamp of approval of the Heavenly Host and the personal endorsement of Jesus Christ. He assured the congregation of the unfailing love of God and the eternal compassion of Christ and urged them to go and do likewise for their fellow man except, of course, for homosexuals, harlots, pagans, pro-choicers, liberals, minorities, Democrats and pagans. Pagans, by definition, were those who held different religious views, belonged to other churches or voiced criticism of the narrow-minded and warped view of Christianity espoused by The First SelfRighteous Church. What motivates men to claim religious authority with only a casual reading of a religious text and no understanding of the long and painful history religion has experienced and imposed over the past 3,000 years? And what, other than ignorance of the truth, compels people to follow them? A July 6 story in the Washington Post revealed that a senior Lutheran pastor has been suspended from his duties and ordered to apologize to all'Christians for participating with Muslims, Jews, Sikhs and Hindus in an interfaith prayer service in Yankee Stadium after Sept. 11.

Wallace Schulz, second Synod, wrote: "To participate service and, additionally, OBITUARIES OBITUARIES COMMUNITY Pagans, by definition, were those who held different religious views, belonged to other churches or voiced criticism of the narrow-minded and warped view of Christianity espoused by The First SelfRighteous Church. "The use of religion to promote divisiveness and violence must be countered by religious leaders from all traditions willing to become actively engaged in peace said Bawa Jain, secretary general of the Millennium World Peace Summit. Also addressing the conference, Israeli Chief Rabbi Israel Meir Lau said that religion has caused many gulfs between people. "But religion also can be a bridge," he added.

"Let's build the bridges and work together to freedom, to love, to peace for the entire world." The pride and prejudice of the self-righteous seems to be in stark contrast to the humility and compassion of the ecumenical effort by the Peace Council. The first appears more concerned with preserving its own authority, doctrine. and the status quo. The latter is concerned with a successful cooperative effort to end conflict, poverty and environmental degradation. It is popular among politicians, the newly "saved" and sincere Christians, when faced with a question of morality or justice, to ask, "What would Jesus do?" What part of the question do you not understand? Do you have a problem with the answer? William E.
