A6 SONOMA WEST Times News July 18, 2002 Community Bridging the Gap congregation left the church feeling good about themselves and their exalted status of being without sin, looking forward to the justified right to throw stones at everyone Pride and prejudice 'A by William E. Haigu ood, DD. Pagans, by definition, were those who held different religious views, belonged to other churches or voiced criticism of the narrow-minded and warped view of Christianity espoused by The First Sell-Righteous Church. And Jesus wept. What shadows lurk in the minds of men who presume to speak for God on such limited acquaintance? What motivates men to claim religious authority with only a casual reading of a religious text and no understanding of the long and painful history religion has experienced and imposed over the past 3,000 years? And what, other than ignorance of the truth, compels people to follow them? A July 6 story in the Washington Post revealed that a senior Lutheran pastor has been suspended from his duties and ordered-to apologize to aH'Christians for participating with Muslims, Jews, Sikhs and might be more than one God, is an extremely serious offense against the God of the Bible.

In brotherly love and admonition," Schulz added, "I appeal to you, President Benke, please make a sincere apology to our Lord, to all members of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and to all Christians who are part of Christ's Body. Joining in prayer with pagan clerics in Yankee Stadium was an offense both to God and to all Christians." In sharp contrast, more than 100 religious leaders of major faiths met in Bangkok on June 12 to launch a world peace council. Participants included Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Jain, Muslim and Hindu clerics. 'The use of religion to promote divisiveness and violence must be countered by religious leaders from all traditions willing to become actively engaged in peace building," said Bawa Jain, secretary general of the Millennium World Peace Summit. Also addressing the conference, Israeli Chief Rabbi Israel Meir Lau said that religion has caused many gulfs between people.

"But religion also can be a bridge," he added. "Let's build the bridges and work together to freedom, to love, to peace for the entire world." The pride and prejudice of the self-righteous seems to be in stark contrast to the humility and compassion of the ecumenical effort by the Peace Council. The first appears more concerned with preserving its own authority, doctrine, and the status quo. The latter is concerned with' a successful cooperative effort to end conflict, poverty and environmental degradation. It is popular among politicians, the newly "saved" and sincere Christians, when -faced with a question of morality or justice, to ask, "What would Jesus do?" What part of the question do you not understand? Do you have a problem with the answer? William E.

Haiguood is a Sonoma West columnist. The pastor of The First Self-Righteous Church pounded his-pulpit with vigor and admonished his congregation, upon pain of eternal damnation, to bear witness to the fact that this was the only true church on the planet Earth bearing the stamp of approval of the Heavenly Host and the personal endorsement of Jesus Christ. He assured the congregation of the unfailing love of God and the eternal compassion of Christ and urged them to go and do likewise for their fellow man except, of course, for homosexuals, harlots, pagans, pro-choicers, liberals, minorities, Democrats and pagans. Pagans, by definition, were those who held different religious views, belonged to other churches-or voiced criticism of the narrow-minded and warped view of Christianity espoused by The First Self-Righteous Church.
