Each of the stations entered into seven-year contracts with NBC three years ago, and those contracts are expected to remain in place under the new owners, Ban-said. Barr also said that Meyer is negotiating with Cumulus Media to sell both KFYR-AM and KYYY Y-93 FM. Earlier this year the Milwaukee-based media company agreed to buy four Bismarck stations that make up the Pro Radio Group of stations. For the television stations, Barr expects there will be minor shifts in philosophy under Sunrise, but the overall goals should remain the same: "Maintain a lot of viewers, sell a lot of advertising and make a lot of money." As measured by the A.C.

Nielson KFYR-TV dominated the Bismarck market in the latest survey conducted in February, with a 57 share of the over-18 market between 7 a.m. and 1 a.m. In comparison, KXMB had 34 percent and KBMY had 9 percent. It's common for family owners to sell stations to conglomerates, Ban-said. Is that good or bad? "I don't know," he said.

"Hopefully for the viewer it will be good. There's no reason they can't bring the same benefits to this market that Meyer has. There's a saying that, 'All television is local To be truly successful, Sunrise will have to be a local broadcaster." The firm last year bought LIN Television, a group of seven large television stations, for $2 billion. It also has controlling interests in two radio groups: Chancellor Media and Capstar Broadcasting. Becoming part of a large media company should be advantageous to Meyer employees, said Meyer President Judith Ekberg Johnson. "There are chances to grow; large companies have more money," she said. The transaction, which is subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission, is expected to close by the fourth quarter of this year, she said.

Meanwhile, the station will continue under its present family ownership. Realities of the television business should make the transition transparent to viewers, Johnson said. "Anybody who owns and operates television stations needs to maintain quality people and quality equipment and keep the ratings up," she said. DiPasquale said a specific strategy for each station won't be set until Sunrise officials meet with station personnel. However, Sunrise plans to put further capital into the stations within the first two to three years of ownership, he added.

"At this time I don't know what the capital needs are, but we will support them to make them the best as we can within their respective markets," DiPasquale said. Converting to the new digital television format will require millions of dollars, said Tom Barr, Meyer's general manager. Because Deal: Price very fair, Sunrise says FROM PAGE 1A HBOBOI days is very high in excess of 25 times annual cash flow, Martin said. Sunrise officials don't think $63 million is too much money, obviously. "We think this is a fair deal for us," said Sandy DiPasquale, Sunrise's chief operating officer.

The caveat: The stations will have to remain dominant in the market to meet any business plan, he said.

"So we will do everything we can to keep them that way. These stations do not need to be fixed; they are very well run." Martin agreed, saying cost-cutting by Sunrise was unlikely. "My opinion is that all the stations are doing very well and that there's not much more they can squeeze out of them," he said. "From what I know of the Meyer stations, they have top-grade people and probably top-grade news organizations. "If that's the case, how much more can they squeeze out of them? The sales are based on cash flow." Stereos: are motorcycles next? FROM PAGE 1A MBmHW you're trying to go to bed.

Leischner also wanted to know what the fans of loud stereos would do "when they can't hear in a few years." Vehicle stereos easily exceed 100 decibels and one contestant at Eggers's contest last year registered 148.7 dB sound pressure level. "Are they going to turn them up even louder?" Leischner asked. Some people live in commercial areas, Leischner said.

"I lived in a trailer park on South 112th Street for nine years and that's commercially zoned." Ness asked commissioners to remember hospitals and motels are also in commercial areas. Commissioner David Jensen, who proposed the ordinance, said, he hopes there are few if any citations issued. "All we're asking with this ordinance is that you turn it down a bit. "I think with an ordinance, if you turn it down some, that'll solve the problem. I think everyone will be nappy," Jensen said.

"I'm not sure but I think so." Several of the people who opposed the ordinance said they felt singled out with the ordinance. "What about motorcycles like those Harley Davidsons?" said BHS student Chris Emineth. "They may be next," said Mayor Bill Sorensen. I 'Designed For Classroom Use!
