B8 Friday, Nov. 1, 1991 The Post-Star, Glens Falls, N.Y. f- Obituarecs Local Grace B. Deob Lake's milfoil woes worse than expected 'Glen Lake has a milfoil problem somewhat more than we expected. There are some dense beds around the Dr.

Frederick Hardt and in the outlet brook. No milfoil grows in the northeastern "neck" of the lake, Hardt said. Hardt did not have an estimate of acreage on the milfoil beds. He said his final report would be released by Dec. 15.

The committee also was told Wednesday that a report on management of milfoil in Lake George will be issued By the Fresh Water Institute of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in November. Milfoil, an aquatic pest weed, was first identified in Lake George in 1 985 and has spread to other lakes in the county including Brant Lake. The report on milfoil control in Lake George will compare, the 1991 Dy Janet Marvel Correspondent Glen Lake's milfoil problem is somewhat larger than first expected, according to a report on the quality of the lake. An assessment of Glen Lake's water, quality and its plant population was completed earlier this month, Dr. Frederick Hardt, owner of Enviromed Associates in Burnt Hills, told Warren County's Lake George Affairs Committee Wednesday.

"Glen Lake has a milfoil problem somewhat more than we expected. There are some dense beds around the islands," Hardt said. Those islands have no names but are located off the east shore near Fitzgerald Road, said Dan Olson, county sanitary investigator. Hardt also identified scattered milfoil plants growing all around the lake's edge, in depths up to 20 feet, Putnam Levy to decrease by 7.5 percent By David Blow Staff Writer PUTNAM Putnam Supervisor John LaPointe announced Thursday town residents will enjoy a 7.5 percent decrease in taxes in 1992. The supervisor said a combination of decreased spending, no salary increases, and cutbacks on paving projects resulted in the decrease.

"We had no salary increases, we cut back the amount of road paving from 2.5 miles to one mile, and the state didn't hit us as slashes town taxes regrowth with the milfoil that was removed previously from the lake, said Larry W. Eichler, laboratory supervisor for the institute. That evaluation is being wrapped up and will be presented at the Lake George Affairs Committee's November meeting, he said. Hardt also told committee mem-, bers Wednesday that the milfoil hand-pulling project was completed Sunday in Lake Luzerne, where an estimated 12 to 14 tons of wet milfoil was plucked from the lake's bottom in a variety of locations. The project which took divers 480 and resulted in all scattered plants from around the lake's perimeter being pulled was $60,000 in the highway balance," he said.

"I know better than that (to expend fund balances)." The supervisor said the town also saved about $3,000 by starting a municipal garbage service to all residents in place of the town's closed landfill. He said the people now enjoy the service and the town is actually saving money. He also said although appropriations increased by $6,000, that figure includes about $5,000 in county waste disposal tickets which the town will be reimbursed for. "So, it's actually almost the same as last year," LaPointe said. A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Nov. 1 at the town hall. hard as some towns," LaPointe said. "I'm very happy about it. As everyone says with state aid and everything going down, we maintained a pretty level budget." Although Putnam's appropriations increased from $377,000 to $383,000, LaPointe said the amount to be raised by taxes dropped from $313,000 to $289,000.

LaPointe said although he lost about $5,000 in state revenue sharing, he said his CHIP'S (Consolidated Highway Improvement Program) funding actually increased a little. He said the tax decrease was also not the result of spending unexpended fund balances. "The only fund balance money we used was about $40,000 of HUDSON FALLS Grace B. i Review described as "very successful" by Hardt. Approximately 5.5 acres of dense beds remain in the lake, Hardt said. The Lake Luzerne project cost $30,000, of which the county contributed $5,000. The town of Lake Luzerne has been approached about paying the remainder of the bill, Olson said. And as the pest weed grows, the Lake Affairs Committee has no funds in its 1992 preliminary budget for milfoil But it does have money for an Adirondack Park Agency work permit necessary to remove the weed, Olson said.

In 1992, $40,000 from the federal Clean Lakes Restoration Project of the federal Environmental Protection Agency and $5,000 from the state Department of Environmental Conservation are slated to be used to manage milfoil in many areas of Lake George. 15. Ommerle's contribution to the evening was a pair of song-groupings: Mozart in the first half and Brahms in the second. She has a delightful soprano, if somewhat tightly wound again, the Mozart might have been better served with a more relaxed interpretation. But she was wonderful in the Brahms, giving it a full range from the sprightly first half of "Das Madchen spricht" to the depths of sadness of "Es traumte mir, ich sei dir teuer." Lieder is, for the most part, music of unrequited, tragic love; she delivered the pathos and romantic sadness1 in full. Eva Schreiner Services for Eva Schreiner, 1 1 a.m.

It was the latter three works that were' best suited to Scholte's painfully intense style. He grips his bow a good quarter of the way up a grip more common in folk or early-instrument players, that sacrifices some maneuverability for added power. The music that he thus drives out of his instrument crackles with charged intensity.

In Monday night's season opener for the 1991-92 de Blasiis Chamber Music Series at the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, he demonstrated a lion-like mastery of his instrument. Scholte's part of the program, which also featured soprano Jeanne Ommerle and pianist James Winn, was also a perfect cross-section of the history of the sonata.
