J. D' Avignon Jr. I were called to the scene. These (Essex County officials were reluc- to classify the case as a suicide. The absence of gunpowder burns on the body suggested the weapon was at a distance of more than arm's length.

Two days after the discovery of i Marrochi's body, a stranger ap-jpeared in town. The man quietly I asked many questions about Mar-rochi's death. During the next two weeks, the stranger learned a great "deal about Marrochi and bis death. The stranger turned out to be Detective Donovan of the Drura-mond Detective Agency of New York City. He had been hired by District Attorney LaDuke to solve the mystery of Marrochi's death.

Detective Donovan had discovered that Marrochi had $70 dollars on him when he was killed. The money was missing. Marrochi had been boarding with the mother of George Amlaw. Shortly after the body was discovered, Amlaw gave $70. to Mary Smart to use in obtaining a divorce.

Smart and Amlaw were lovers. After she obtained a divorce, they would marry. Detective Donovan obtained a search warrant for Mrs. Smart's house. He located the missing money in her house.

The detective and district attorney then brought Amlaw in for questioning. It lasted for a number of hours before Amlaw confessed to the crime. Amlaw told the investigators he knew Marrochi had the money, and that he needed it to help Mrs. He told them he tried to steal the money from the victim's room, but was unable to do so. I On the day of the murder, Marrochi headed into the woods to hunt Amlaw followed him and shot him in the head.

He then put the shotgun in the dead man's hand to make it look like a suicide. He took the money and gave it to Mrs. Smart. On July 22 1913, Amlaw pleaded guilty in Essex County Court to a charge of murder in the second degree. Justice Borst sentenced him to serve not less than 20 years at Dannemora State Prison.
