Saturday, May SI, M80 Poif-Sfor, Clan Foils, N.Y. Story of Disraeli comes to TV i of Disraeli. Why Because McShane is "always unexpected," says Clarke. But then again so was Disraeli, Clarke adds. Which is why he and director Claude Whatham deliberately set out to find an.

unconventional actor to portray the equally unconventional Disraeli. McShane's role is light years from many of the roles in which he has previously been seen Judas in "Jesus of Nazareth," Christopher Marlowe in "Will Shakespeare," Heathcliff in "Wuthering Heights." On this side of the pond, U.S. viewers have seen McShane in "Roots," Pinter's "The Caretaker" and on "Police Woman," and in films including "The Battle Britain" and "If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium." The production is presented on PBS by WGBH, Boston, where Joan Wilson is series producer. The first of the four-part "Masterpiece Theater" series, "Disraeli: Portrait Of A Romantic," will air at 9 p.m. Sunday on WMHT, channel 17.

Chilling drama airs bably the most controversial figure ever to dominate Britain's political scene." So says one reviewer, who found that the television production captures the essence of Disraeli's fascinating life story. Mary Peach plays Mary Anne Windham Leqis, the flirtatious, apparently frivolous woman who played such a dramatic part in shaping Disraeli's career. (After the death of her husband she became Disraeli's wife, historically "the perfect Rosemary Leach is seen as Queen Victoria. Disraeli was to serve Victoria as prime minister and would enjoy the confidence of Victoria as did no other of her prime ministers. And, all of this, of course, at a time when Britain displayed the full panoply of Empire.

An awesome cast backs the principals in the lavish production. "Dangerous casting," is how producer Cecil Clarke describes his choice of Ian McShane for the role of By AUSTIN PHILIPS Benjamin, Ear! of Beaconsfield (1804-1881), English statesman and novelist. That's how you would be introduced by the reference books to Benjamin Disraeli, towering political figure and Renaissance man for the Victorian era. How Disraeli comes to life in the four-part, Mobil-funded Masterpiece Theatre series over PBS is something else again, with Ian McShane in the title role of "Disraeli Portrait of a Romantic." The production scans some 40 years in the life of the man known as novelist, politician, flamboyant wit, romantic and dandy. It sheds light on his political life and private life, and reveals the impact of his writings.

"The series reveals what made Disraeli tick, from the time he was a dandified young novelist of 27. He chases the ladies, spends money he hasn't got, dresses outlandishy and longs for power.
