There were also many opinions as to what the monument should look like.

22-year-old woman about seven months ago has ceased to be a prime topic in this resort community. Summer, after all. is Saratoga's season for bars, horses, ballet and concerts at the performing arts center. It is not a time of serious issues. But the killer of Sheila Shepard has not been found, and that troubles law enforcement officials and her family, among others.

"We haven't got any more direction than we had initially in the first couple days," Police Chief Peter Pemberton said recently. "It sticks in the craw of investigative officers they can't get a bite on this thing." Investigator Thomas Mitchell is assigned the case, and says "there are not too many days that go by that I don't do something with it." But he admits this now is limited primarily to talking almost daily with the dead woman's father. James Van Ness, and rechecking old leads. In response to the silence. Van Ness recently took the issue to the public again.

He made a statement to the local newspaper asking for people with any recollection of Iriends or associates of his daughter to contact a still-active police tip line. There is a $5,000 reward for information "leading to the arrest and conviction The request produced no response, according to Mitchell. "It's been months since anything came in on that tip line." he says, Yet. even with the public's public silence, conversations with locals show a continuing concern over what happened to Ms. Shepherd a continued awareness that the lifestyle that may have killed her is not an uncommon one here.

It was in the bars on and near Caroline Street that Ms. Shepeard spent many and most of her final hours. Her father admits she had a drinking problem and associates say she frequented the crowd that drinks the night away in Gaffney's. Casa 13. The Golden Grill and other spots.

She was last seen alive leaving Casa 13 around midnight Saturday, Nov. 22. Police say by 3 a.m. Sunday she was dead in her Church Street apartment, a 15-minute walk away. She was found the following Tuesday morning by an uncle after she failed to appear for secretarial classes.

She was naked, bound hand and foot to her bed and asphyxiated by a blouse stuffed in her mouth, police say. A steak knife had been thrust into her abdomen, but police say she was dead when it happened. Medical reports, according to police, do not indicate she was raped or sexually abused. Police say there was no sign of a struggle. In the bars, the topic of the murder is not volunteered any more, but it's not far from the surface, if you ask.

"As a parent, I'm concerned. It could happen to me," says Pat Creede, a bartender at the Golden Grill. "Nobody really talks about it any more." says Lori Fitzgib-bon, manager of The Hub another stopping spot for Ms. Shepard. But Ms.

Fitzgibbon, like Ms. Creede and others, expressed a general concern for her own safety. Davis Mead, owner of Gaffney's, said, "It's not the kind of thing that people want to talk about." He added that it "seems strange that in a town this size no one's come up with anything. She did all her carousing in a two-or three-block area." In 1924. more than 23,000 persons paid a modest fee and climbed the 306-foot stone Bennington Battle Monument.

Today, most visitors to this region pass by the place near the Vermont village and take little, if any. interest in it. When completed in 1889. it ranked among the architectural monuments of the world. It still is an adventure to visit and an awesome reminder of this region's part in the American Revolution.

Hudson Falls and Kingsbury residents should be interested in the fact that most of the monument is con structed from stone quarried and cut in the town and called Sandy Hill dolomite. This form of blue-gray magnensian limestone is still quar ried in Kingsbury and sold as crushed stone. Sandy Hill was the former name of the village of Hudson Falls. The monument itself was a matter of some controversy and something of a battle took place to have it constructed. One strange thing about it is that the "Battle of Bennington" did not take place there.

In fact, it did not occur in Vermont at all. This battle, which some his- TTT AIR CONDITIONING YORK HEAT PUMPS. Summer air conditioning with winter fuel savings. Commercial Appliance Service. Call Marty DeVit 798-1819.

As they talk and correspond with job applicants, the recruiters learn about the applicants. It's really a process of discovery for both parties ademic and work-related requirements must be met. but after that, job applicants need poise and the ability to express themselves. Companies are looking for candidates who have a knowledge of the working world and who are serious and realistic about their career plans.
