NEW YORK, Jan. inspection of the Rockefeller foundation and other corporations endowed to help humanity was advocated here by Samuel Untermeycr, famous lawyer, before the fccVeral commission, on industrial relations.

This commission, the Chairman of which is Frank P. Walsh, of Missouri, has begun an investigation ot the Rockefeller, Carnegie, Kusrel Sage and Baron de Rirsch foundations to determine whether or not they should be regulated by the. United States government and Mr. Untermeyer was the first witness. "The power and importance of these foundations can be gained from the fact that they control about Other recommendations by Mr.

Untermeyer 'took occasion, to give Ms -views on socialism, saying: "Socialism is a beautiful dream, but it does not work out as a practical theory of government. The socialists say there are not enough laws; in my opinion there are too many." Mr Untermeyer said that the foundations are doing much good and no harm but that they "gave a fair example of the evils of the vice of state legislation." ST. JOE NEWS. fSpeelal Correspondence.) Tho firemen's fair, which was held hero AVednrsday, Thursday and Friday of this week, was a success in every way. The weather couldn't have been nicer and the crowds were good. Wednesday evening the admittance fee was five cents.

There were the regular fair excitements at the different booths, where the usual whips, balloons and pennants were on sale. There was the the knife rack, peanut and popcorn stand, fancy work booth, lunch and candy booths. All these were arranged around the wall of the opera house. In the center was a big tank i'n which were three live, ducks, rinRS were thrown at them. On Thursday II. Brown, auditor evening after the usual atrractions had become tiresome, the donations were all auctioned off to the highest bidder. Everything one could think of was donated. James Rhodenbaugh cried tho auction and A. D.

Brunson was clerk. The amount of the goods sold at auction alone was $116.35, besides this was the proceeds of all tho broths during the day and evening up to 8:30 o'clock. Friday evening the proceeds of the moving picture show were given for the firemen's benefit. The house crowded. Between reels several of the 'home talent sang solos, also at'tor the first reel there was a unique "prize the opponents being- i ed and each given a boxing glove and a tincup.

Two rounds were fought, much to the amusement of the spectators. After the last reel a vaudeville net was given by Messrs. George Hart und TJoyd Coburn. The fancywork donated by tho ladies of St. Joe amounted to $50.50.

The entire amount raised during the three clays amounted to The money will be used to purchase a new gong for the town hall, also to better equip tho firemen. LAKE WAWASEE NEWS. "Dr. McGarvey, proprietor of the Vawter 1'ark hotel, who has been very ill of typhoid fever at the homo of Ills father-in-law in Qoshen, is reported still very low arid slight hopes are entertained for his recovery.
