"In 1989, he's 15-0, is most valuable player in the regional and wins the only game we won at nationals, and there wasn't anybody asking about him except a couple of junior colleges. I couldn't understand it. People just overlooked him." Helling went to UND on a football scholarship, but he transferred after one semester to Kishwaukee Junior College in Illinois.

"It was a real hard choice," he said. "I loved my semester there at UND." At Kishwaukee, Helling made enough of an impression to receive one of the 40 invitations to try out for the Pan Am team last summer. Helling surprised everybody by being the only player to make the team who hadn't played Division I baseball the previous spring. After the Pan Am Games, Helling said, one of the coaches told him "it was monumental that I even made the team. He said there were three times when they had me cut.

But every time, I showed them something that made them keep me." Helling was a late-round draft choice of the New York Mets last summer, but he elected to go to Stanford. This year he was the 22nd pick overall. "I still find it hard to believe that I'm a first-rounder," he said. Helling has a year of eligibility left at Stanford, but he said he expects to sign with Texas. "I've experienced pretty much everything I want to at the college level," he said.

"I'm ready to go on." By GREG DeVILLERS, Grand Forks Herald There are a lot of "what if' questions for Rick Helling now that professional baseball beckons. The former Lakota High School multi-sport talent was chosen last week by the Texas Rangers in the first round of baseball's amateur draft. But what if he'd never left Lakota, where he grew up, to join Fargo's powerful American Legion baseball team as a 17-year-old. What if he'd concentrated on third base, his best position as a youngster in Lakota, rather than becoming a pitcher? What if Helling had stuck with football, a sport he played at the University of North Dakota as a freshman in 1989, rather than transferring to a junior college to play baseball. Helling pitched for the U.S.

team in last summer's Pan Am games. This spring he was a regular pitcher for Division I Stanford University. But it was as a sophomore third baseman at Lakota, during the 1987 state high school baseball tournament, that he first attracted attention. "Rick was a better third baseman at that time than he was a pitcher," Lakota baseball-coach Dennis Winkler says. "He did very little pitching as a sophomore because we had some older kids who did almost all of it." "I know there were a couple of pro scouts at the state tournament looking at him.

They introduced 6 I've experienced pretty much everything I want to at tie college level. I'm ready to go on. former Fargo Legion pitcher Rick Helling, a first-round draft pick of tie Texas Rangers themselves to me and asked about Rick. They seemed very interested in him as a third baseman," he said. "I was a bit surprised.

That doesn't happen very often, especially with a sophomore." Helling admits if he hadn't moved to Fargo, all the baseball success he's enjoyed probably wouldn't have happened. "I probably never would have gotten that much into baseball," Helling said. "I was mainly a football player (at Lakota). Once I got to Fargo and people started seeing me, that's when I started to hear that I could do something in baseball." Fargo Legion coach Jerry Harter considered making Helling a catcher in 1989, the year Fargo went to the American Legion World Series. "To this day I still think Rick could have been a hell of a catcher," Harter said.

"He could stroke the ball. And you didn't need that great speed at catcher." Yet college baseball recruiters showed little interest in Helling. SCOREBOARD 9. Goran Ivanisevic $360,535 10. LATE TUESDAY ATHLETICS 5, BREWERS 2: Mark McGwire hit his major league-leading 22nd homer and became the fifth-fastest plaver to reach 200 career homers, lifting the Oakland Athletics to a victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. McGwire, whose homer came in his career at-bat, got to 200 faster than everyone except Ralph Kiner, Babe Ruth, Harmon Killebrew and Eddie Matthews. Kiner, the all-time fastest, dit it in his at-bat. BLUE JAYS 10, YANKEES 3: Joe Carter homered, tripled, doubled and drove in four runs and the Blue Jays completed an impressive three-game sweep. The Blue Jays outscored New York 28-7 in the series and rapped 15 hits in the finale, including two homers, three triples and four doubles.

Greg Myers hit a three-run homer during a six-run second inning and Devon White got three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice. Toronto has not lost a season series at Yankee Stadium since 1984, going 33-16 in that span. The Blue Jays, who dropped their first game of the season against the Yankees, have beaten them six straight times. WHITE SOX 3, ANGELS 2: Shawn Abner's bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the 12th inning scored George Bell on a close play, extending the Angels' losing streak to six games. It was the fourth straight win for the White Sox.

California has dropped 20 of its last 24. Donn Pall (4-2) pitched three scoreless innings for the win, allowing three hits. Luis Polonia stole four bases, tying a California club record. RANGERS 5, MARINERS 3: Juan Gonzalez homered for the fifth time in his last four games and Dickie Thon added a two-run homer to key a five-run third inning. It was the sixth victory in seven tries this season for Texas over Seattle.

Jose Guzman (6-3) scattered six hits and walked one in seven innings in winning his fourth straight decision. Jeff Russell finished for his 16th save. INDIANS 4, TIGERS 2: Glenallen Hill's second home run of the game and fourth in two days led the Indians. Hill and Brook Jacoby led off the 11th with successive homers off Mike Munoz (0-1). Steve Olin (1-3) got the win for Cleveland with 3 2-3 innings of shutout relief, yielding two hits.

ORIOLES 3, RED SOX 1: Rick Sutcliffe allowed one run in seven innings and Mike Devereaux drove in two runs to lead the streaking Baltimore Orioles past the Boston Red Sox. Sutcliffe (9-4) allowed six hits in winning a fourth straight start for the first time since 1989. His nine victories are tied for the American League lead. He lost his shutout in the seventh when Ellis Burks hit his team-high sixth homer. He has allowed only one run in his last 15 innings.

Storm Davis pitched the eighth and Gregg Olson got the final three outs for his 16th save. NL BASEBALL 1 BRAVES 2, DODGERS 1: Steve Avery allowed five hits over eight innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, their 10th victory in 12 games and the Dodgers' sixth loss in their last nine. The Braves went ahead for good in the sixth when David Justice snapped a 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly that scored Otis Nixon. GIANTS 6, REDS 2: Bud Black pitched three-hit ball for eight-plus innings and Will Clark and Robby Thompson provided home run support as the San Francisco Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds. EXPOS 8, METS 2: The Mets made six errors to tie a club record, and Montreal Mark Gardner beat them for the first time in nine starts.

PADRES 5, ASTROS 1: Fred McGriff homered for the second straight game and hit an RBI double as the San Diego Padres beat Houston, completing a three-game sweep and sending the Astros to their fifth straight loss. PIRATES 2, PHILLES 1: Pittsburgh used two walks, a single and an error on Philadelphia's Len Dykstra to score an unearned in the 12th inning. Barry Bonds walked against Barry Jones (4-3) to start the 12th and advanced on an infield out. Gary Varsho was intentionally walked and Jose Lind singled to center. Bonds initially stopped at third, but raced home when Dykstra bobbled the ball in center field.

CUBS 4, CARDINALS 2: Chicago's Greg Maddux allowed three hits, Sammy Sosa had two home runs and slumping St. Louis played terrible defense. Maddux (6-6) held the Cardinals hitless through five innings. LEGION BASEBALL I 1 HAZEN 5-11, WATFORD CITY 3- 3: Hazen reqired extra innings to win the first game but thumped home-standing Watford City 11-3 in the nightcap.
