CnAMBERSBUEG, PA. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 1873. Stock, Farm and Household. Drainage.

On lands requiring it farmers cannot possibly, at the same cost, do so much to improve them as by under-draining. A writer says Wherever from the retentive nature of the subsoil and the existence of springs, the upper soil is saturated with water this is the only means of reclaiming it. The superabundance of moisture renders abortive all attempts at tillage, and if we keep the land in grass, the quality is such as materially diminishes its value. By thoroughly under-draiuing it such land is frequently rendered the most valuable of any for tillage and for meadow. The expense, where there are plenty of stones, is not great; let a trench be dug three or three and a-half feet deep, and two feet wide, and filled to within a foot and a-half or twenty inches of the surface with small stones, covered with spruce or hemlock boughs to prevent the dirt from getting among the stones, and it will afford a sufficient channel in ordinary cases to convey all the suix-rfluous water, and will last for many years.

It is a good way to get rid of the small stones which disfigure many farms, and by the expenditure of a few dollars in this way a field which bore nothing but a scanty supply of low ground grass may be made to bear good English grass or other crops, and become the richest and niost productive portion of the farm. If the soil is very heavy, the application of sand or light soil will have the effect of a fertilizer, as well as render the land more easy to work. CulUtttiea Orchards. The following account is given of two orchards in the same neighborhood, near liuffalo, which have received opposite treatment One had been plowed while the trees were small, and afterward seeded to grass, and annually top-dressed with compost or stable manure. The other orchard was kept iu a condition of the highest culture, with vegetables grown between the trees.

The orchard in grass gives an abundance of good fruit, while the one lilghly cultivated bears but little. The inference is tliat grass is better for orchards than high cultivation. But a simple statement of this sort is of no value whatever, without Information as to the circumstances which control the growth of the trees. Nothing Is said about the length of the annual shoots in either cae, and wc would otherwise know whether the trees grow too fast or too feebly. If the annual manuring on the grass gives a yearly growth of two or three feet, that is enough, and it would be detii-meutat to give higher culture, as ap-acs to have been the case with the cultivated orchard.

But if an orchard with free cultivation does not give shoot a foot long, it would lie destructive to lay it down to grass, especially, as is commonly theca.se, no manuring whatever beingapplied. Togivegeneral rules without any modifying condition partakes of the character of quackery, and it would be like presenting food to a sick person without knowing whether be already suffered from plethora or starvation. Lima al Silt. Prof, Johnson recommend for fertilizing purposes to mix one bushel of milt and two Vusiwls of dry lime under cover, and allow the mixture to decompose gradually, thus forming chemical onion. For this purpose the mixture should be made six weeks before use, or still better, two or three months, the heap being turned over occasionally.

This salt and lifue mixture, when applied at the rate of twenty or thirty bushels per acre, forms an excellent top-dressing for many crops. It acts powerfully on the vegetable matter of soils fifty-six liusbeis applied to turnips have produced as large crop as barnyard manure. It is destructive to grubs aud insects in the soil. Like soil it attracts moisture from the air, and is useful against drouth. Its decomposing power is remarkable, and if three or four bushels of It are mixed with a load of muck, the Utter will be thus tSronghIy powdered.

Oursbiut. at OiVercal Woods, Experiments have been lately made, by driving sticks, made of different woods, each two feet king and one and a-half Inches square, into the ground, only one-half inch projecting- outward. It was found that in five yearf all those wade of oak, elm, fir, soft ma-iiojtriy, and nearly every variety of pine, were totally rotten. Larch, hard pine and were dis-ayed on the outside only while the acacia, with the exception of being also slightly attacked on the exterior, was otherwise sound. Hard mahogany and cedar of Lebanon were In tolerably g'l condition but only Virginia cedar was found as good as when put in the ground.

This 1 of some important to builders, showing what woods should be avoided, and what others used by preference in underground work. Death at Planting. The depth of planting trees, vines, shrubs, must be regulated entirely by the character of the roots. Trees with coarse, forked roots like the oak aud the standard jn-ar, cannot be planted to deep. Those with delicate, fibrous roots must be planted sltallow.

Neglect of altentioa as to the character of the roots Is given as a reason why the attempt to cultivate the trailing arbutas so generally fails. It, as well as tiie kalmia and the rhododendron, should stand rather alxive titan below the level of the soil, and the earth should be drawn up and over its roots. The depth to plant must still 1 regulated largely by the character of the soil and the drainage. lata n. Hiijh Fruit Treat.

An liJinoU fruit grower, who has 12,000 apple ami from 4,000 to pear trees, finds that "those with low head of the same varieties show at least two-thirds more fruit, as large and as high colored as those with high tops." To test the matter, he cut off in certain rows all the limbs from four to six feet from the ground, and In others encouraged the limb to tart close to the surface, and in the latter case neither thinned nor pruned, except occasionally to lop away a too lusty shoot in order to preserve a symmetrical appearance, or an evenly-balanced head, and the above la the result. Horn Hit Ftott fai l. Shelter Island, X. sends an account of the eggs produced by forty hens from January 1st to April 3oth. They were kept In a coop dug three feet below tiie level of the ground, and sixteen feet long and eight fi-ct wide the floor was bare earth, and the peak of the roof was seven feet above tiie floor.

A window of six square feel was made In the roof. The fowls laid egg, which sold for $47,30, and consumed worth of corn and clams, leaving for profit, be sides 200 chickens running around and more on the way. One farmer sells ail his corn and grain, or should he feed some hogs they lie in the woods where the manure is lost among the trees or washed away down a stream of water. He erops year after yerr, returning no equivalent for the fertility drawn from the soil on which his crops have grown, selling everything grown which it is possible to market. He saves money, ia an excellent man, but from the impoverished state of the land has been a wretched fanner.

The other buys stock in a semi-fat condition, and with his produce feeds the animals till they are first class meat, thus gaining an extia price for tiie meat he bought as well as for the additional weight but there are three sources of profit in this transaction in the first place the weight bought is worth more by a cent or two per pound for being made fat and ripe, and then the Increased weight pays for the food, while the manure made is a third return for the consumption of produce, and farmer who contrives in this way to keep np tiie strength of the soil Is a sensible man and an excellent farmer. If it is meritorious to make two blades of grass grow where only one grew before, what is it to bring land so low as only to grow one blade where two formerly flourished 7 ALLEY SPIRIT JOB TRINTIXU OFFICE.
