PAGE SIX THE BROCKWAY RECORD. BROCKWAY. PA. NOVEMBER 15, 1956 Rovers End Season With 20-7 toss To St Marys Dutchmen BY J. J.

McDONEL Sports Editor earlier in the day. By dark we had the two bucks hanging in front of the shack and supper well on the way, a situation guaranteed to boost the zest for living by leaps and bounds. The sad end to this tale can very well be related in a few words. Five more days of tireless "daw I to dark" hunting produced nothing more than four snowshoe dozens of grouse, two cottontails and a grumpy old porcupine all out of season. Looks as though I was the only one contrary enough to fail.

hunters concentrate. Later they transfer to other localities where the bear and deer hunting is the heaviest. In the move they profit, also, from association with other experienced game protectors. All of the members of the present Student Officer Class were deputies with considerable exper-a series of competitive examina-ience prior to qualifying through tions to attend the school. Experiences they will have in game season and things they will learn from seasoned officers of the Commission will augment knowledge gained in the classroom.

These experiences, plus further instruction at the school early in 1957 will amply qualify the student officers as State Game Protectors when they graduate from the course next spring. FAST-GROWING BEVERAGE NEW YORK Consumer sales of vodka are expected to reach a quarter of a billion dollars by year-end, a distilling firm executive said this week. Edward K. Dreier, president of the firm that markets Samovar vodka, predicted that the beverage practically unknown to United States drinkers a decade ago will rank second to whiskey in popularity by 1958. Game School Trainees On Field Duly Trainees at the Ross Lcfflnr Game School, west of town, have been assigned to field duty during hunting season.

They have been attending classes at the school since July and are now receiving field training for a few weeks. On going to the field each student officer comes under the guidance of an experienced game protector. In pre-season work and during the sTnall game season the trainees work in areas where deer far, far ahead of the hunter, The art of being contrary is departed from his usual place kick attempt for the PAT and circled end for the marker. What few of us Brockway brought down the curtain for the 1956 football season as the Rovers bowed to the high flying Dutch from St. Marys last Saturday afternoon on the local field. Boy Hunters Need Guidance It is disquieting to note that early in the 1956 game season an unusually high percentage of gun-hunter casualties were boys. A few of them were boys. Apparently, some youngsters are hunting alone or with other boys. The law requires they be accompanied by an adult while hunting, for the safety of everyone. The incidence of self-shooting among teen-age hunters this fall again indicates that those involved had not been schooled in the operations of their firearms and in safe gun handling so probably did not realize the poten-tions of the instruments they were using.

However, the young hunters are not the only victims of preventable "accidents" due to mis- contrary spells and began pounding the table with his wheezy old briar pipe, spilling hot ashes all over the shack. We emphatically opposed such utter nonsense, not in the least bit contrariwise, but with obvious good common sense. In the end, to prevent a conflagration from flying tobacco ashes, we gave in to his silly proposal. Next morning found us at the eastern end of Hemlock Hollow, preparing to move slowly down its entire length some two and a half miles. A wind of about five miles per hour gently pushed us along as wemoved down the broad sweep of the hollow.

Old Greg had explained the plan to us the night before, and by George it was just crazy enough to work. He had placed us about a hundred yards apart; me at the bottom of the broad arroyo; Charlie in line with me 8 kw. fflaBr-rasBHa mgXjkMcQ I i "Y' Small Appliances Wiring Supplies Lighting Fixtures Wells Electrical Service 643 Main Street Dial 21-505 BROCKWAY, PA. raise our voices in protest or opposition to some idea or plan, but to bear it to the point of diametrical opposition is unthinkable. For instance, there was the time at our deer hunting camp, when, after a week of intensive hunting, we had failed utterly to bag a single buck.

Some of the red-clad hopefuls had fired away most of their ammunition in disgust and gone off to more productive work at their respec-Ive jobs. Three of us were left to make good our boasts of several weeks ago. Two of us did, the writer excluded. It started around the camp stove just as I was stacking the last of the supper dishes in the ancient old cupboard, scarred and scraped, hacked and stabbed, a sagging veteran of uncounted deer seasons. I had barely straddled my rickety old stool, when the skinny, time-honored and venerable old deer slayer stroked his grizzled beard with raspy, rough and toughened hand, remarking: "Alas, gentlemen, we have been forsook by lady luck and all the infarncl deer in the county." fie sighed deeply.

"What are we going to do about it?" A long period of silence followed. Old Greg, we figured, knew all the answers, let him propose the next move. Charlie spat into the ash pan and eyed RADIOS AND -TELEVISION C. B. S.

In so doing, the wily vvhitetail would be apt to sulk unwittingly into view of any one of the silent hunters. Greg insisted the deer would not break into a panic run as long as we is game. Before season, sportsmen, gun club and public schools have commendably assumed the task of teaching youngsters safe gun handling and stressing dangerous hunting methods. But the lack of firm parental control of youngsters with guns has allowed many human shootings in season and out. A hunter moving "silently" in the woods will sound like the approach of a I rass band to the ears of a wise old deer, and all the instincts and sly cunning of the ages will go inlp action with the result that the hunter usually loses the game. We had covered a scant quarter mile when Charlie fired two rounds with well spaced precision, sending Greg and I into Greg hopefully. I poured the old geezer a cup of hot coffee, which he downed nosily in three gulps. Wiping his chin with the back of his hand, and nodding towards Charlie and me, he spoke, "Well, gents, by your silence I feel you are leaving the field open for me.

In that case, since you birds have been confounded by our bum luck, I will endeavor to plot a more successful approach to the problem." The remarks he expected did not come, so he went on. "Tomorrow mornin' we will proceed to hunt in a manner which ain't exactly accordin' to Hoyle, but which I regard as bein' quite likely to get a buck or two." At the age of Old Greg, one may at times expect to find that the years have, in addition to souring his disposition, may have addled his brain. The suggestion he made next proved my suspicions. "Tomorrow mornin' we are going to hunt the left side of Hemlock Hollow all the way down, an' WITH the wind." The Pennsylvania Game Law carries this provision partially for human safety, partially to encourage good sports manship.
