Italy, Hungary and Bulgaria, playing along with Hitler.

Yugoslavia and Rumania as the fated sacrifices, reece and Turkey, ready to cast their-lot with the Allies and Egypt. Powerful, silent Russia almost a spectator, but not quite. Most important, say objective experts, is the way Mussolini will make Italy jump. Daily, anti-Allied sentiment increases, led by the Fascist propaganda machine. New reserve classes are being called to the colors hourly.

The powerful Italian fleet maneuvers menacingly off the Yugoslavian and Greek coasts, almost in the shadow of the Allied squadrons based along Egyptian shores. Mussolini boasts an army of eight million men and an air force ready to sweep the Franco-British fleet from the Mediterranean, as Hitler's planes chased the English men-of-war from the North sea. Neighbors Eye Yugoslavia First and foremost of II Duce's proclaimed foes is Yugoslavia. With land frontiers on the north, with the Adriatic patroled by Mussolini's warships and planes, with Albania, the Italian-controlled "dagger," on her flank, Yugoslavia mobilizes her tough, but underequipped, army and waits fearfully. Possessing a population of 16,000,000, Yugoslavia, a satellite state of France, emerging from World War I with huge gains in area and inhabitants, she can muster an army of 1,500,000.

But Yugoslavia lacks modern weapons, transportation and unity of people. Serbian overlords only recently began to ameliorate their oppressive rule over Croat, Slovene and Macedonian minorities within her borders. Should Hitler give the blitzkrieg signal in the Balkans, Yugoslavia, it is held, would be invaded by Italy, laifti-hungry for 22 years, by impoverished Bulgaria, dismembered to enlarge Yugoslavia, and by Hungary, which also nurses Bulgaria's resentment. Bordering threatened Yugoslavia and Rumania, but ostensibly- pro-Ally or wisely neutral, are Greece and Turkey. Ruled by a pro-Nazi dictator. Gen. -John Metaxas, Greece stands somewhat aloof and confused in the Balkan boiling pot. However, Italy's insistence upon Mediterranean domination makes her puppet state, Albania, a thorn in the side of Athens.

Should the Allies come to Rumania's or Yugoslavia's assistance, Italy may overrun Greece to prevent use of her bases by Franco-British warships. With a population of but 7,000,000, Greece boasts she can put 600,000 men into the field, but soldiers, equipment, air force and naval units are second-rate. Turkey Pro-Ally Turkey, playing a pro-Ally game since the death of Dictator Kemal Ataturk, is partially safeguarded by geography from- the Rome-Berlin axis. But Turkey announced that an attack on weak Greece would bring her tough, but badly-equipped army of 1,000,000 soldiers into the fray. Brooding above the entire Balkan cauldron is the Soviet TJnion, fresh from victory over Finland, with an army equal in size to the entire peninsular forces.

Pro-Bulgaria, with even harassed Yugoslavia discarding her 22-year-old hatred of Communism, Russia suddenly looms as the peace protector of the Balkans. And across the Mediterranean lies England's puppet. Egypt, bordering on Italy's African c-irpire, ready to cut off in an instant II Duce's own lifeline to some 500,000 seasoned troops now in Africa. In French Syria, too, waits an Allied army of 300,000 under General Weygand, ready to block any' change in the Balkan status quo. The Balkans are neutral.

But in the words of a 'current European joke, "Neutral against -whom?" Florrie 32, is dead, and: 90- year-old 'Hiram 'Derby, her husband's stepfather, was under arrest Monday as a result' of an argument over a tombstone. Sheriff Loveland said that Derby confessed to the shooting in the Whitcomb home, seven miles northeast of here, Sunday night. -The argument started when Derby declared that "too cheap a marker" had been placed on the grave of Mrs. Whitcomb's father, according to Prosecutor J. C.

Paxson. Coroner H. M. Warner reported that Mrs. Whitcomb had ordered Derby from the house after the aged man had struck a five-year-old of the Whitcombs with a cane in the argument.

Derby then drew a revolver and fired four shots at the two of them. entering her body, the coroner said he was informed. Howard Whitcomb, the woman's husband, knocked Derby to the ground and disarmed him. The aged man wandered away while Whitcomb treated his wife's wounds. 'Derby was found four hours later lying exhausted on the ground a mile and a half from the scene.

He was taken to a hospital under guard and Warner said that an of- ficial inquest would be held -as soon as Derby was physically 'able to attend. RE-COUNT ASKED CADIZ, May A. Harry McGregor CR-Ohio) wants congress to restudy the effect of foreign competition on American labor, agriculture and industry. He contends that the government, still grappling with the unemployment problem, is overlooking a chance to solve it by curtailing importation of products available at home.

McGregor Is using the house record in an effort to convince his colleagues that reciprocal trade agreements have cut millions -from the farmer's income and the worker's wages, and slowed down Industry's output.
