No. 685. GTS TUINTED PUBLISHED DAILY CDe jaattonal eajette. LINE OF Marine Insurance Company. January 6th, 1823.

TIIE Directors have this day declared Schuylkill Navigation Company, held on the 6th inst. to examine the Report and Statement of the Board of Managers, and to recommend such further measures as they may deem necessary water to the outlet of the preceding Canal. The route of a Canal from this dam to the lower end of Reading, is not yet decided on; considerable difficulties resist the pursuit of any course of improvement which has hitherto been presented to our view, arising chiefly fiom the opposition of some of the inhabitants of Reading on one side of the river, and the inequalities of the ground and rocky bluffs on the other. The excavation of the earth, the digging of lock pits, and blowing of rocks on the Canals laid out ST WILLIAM FRY, No. 72, SOUTH SECOND STREET, PHILADELPHIA.

The President and Managers of the Schuylkill Navigation Company, submit to the Stockholders, the accounts of the Company for the last year, tocethe with a report of the present state of the improvements under their care.

iresnct wnicn raised the water in the river Schuylkill in February last to an unusual height, fully tried the security of the works heretofore erect .1 i .1. i cu, auu, aunougii some oreacnes were made in the Canal banks at FlatRock and some trifling injury to the dams and locks between Flat Rock and Per kiomen, yet the damage on the whole was ot small amuunt. season, an these I 1 i I 1 places have been re I i s. auu aui.il auuuiuiiai strengtn given as waa he ieverl ner-aaru fn preservation from the effects of a simi bliwi IUIUI lar freshet. lhe works-are now in eood order irom tne great talis to Pawiing's bridge and are believed to be of sufficient strength to resist the breaking up of the ice, or the utmost violence of the current.

The Canal 3 miles long, opposite the mouth of French Creek, with the locks and dam, have been so far com pleted, as to admit of the passace of boats, making a navigation of 7 miles. and overcoming a tall ol 14 feet. lhe Canal at Custard Island com menced last yenr of 3 miles in length, "as this year been extended about 2 miles further up to Finkebiner's Hill 1 he work on this Canal is nearly com pleted: the locks at the lower end are partly built; lhe, work at the truard lock and abutments for the dam have been commenced and the timber for the dam is at hand near the site. It is probable this improvement will be com Dieted bv the first of August next; it will overcome a fall of IS feet, and will back tin the water to Avithin half a mile of Pideeon crecK, at which point commences Canal 23 miles lonir, extendim? to the dam at Lewis's Falls. The excavation of this Canal was let out on contract last winter, to be finished by the first of last November, but an unusual decree ol sickness and mortality prevailing at that season ot the year, whic is generally considered as the most favourable fur the performance of labour, interrupted the progress of the work, and at one period, nearly suspended all operations; but, notwithstanding this serious calamity, we feel much saiifaction in beine able to state, that lhi excavation of earth and removal of rocks in the whole line of the Canal is nearly brought to a close; much heavy embankment has been made, the greater number of culverts have been finished, and of the bridges which will be required on this line, for the accommodation of the vari ous farms, and the public roads, many of the most expensive have been built.

The guard lock and feeders are nearly completed, and one lock of II feet lift is finished in a substantial manner, and of superior workmanship: the cut stone for the other locks is provided, and the lock pits chiefly dug out, and the whole work in such a state of forwardness as to leave no doubt, that this Canal, as well as the Canal below, will be fit for navi gation by the first of August next, if not at an earlier period. This improvement will overcome a fall ol 76 feet. The 2 locks in the arm adioinintr Mif flin Island, a little below Reading, beine imnroriff rl lnratrr! 'Si- neer Oecame- necessary to erect others at the dam on the opposite side ot the river, which have been finishes, and contribute greatly to facilitate the navigation. Thus, connecting all the works from Philadelphia to the lower line of the borough of Reading: 1 nomas (Jakes, our Engineer, though several times laid up with the prevailing sickness, ana constantly pressed with the concerns of the company, has, not-withstanding, laid out the routes for 2 Ca nats and other works connected there with, commencing at the end of the improvements above Hamburg, and extend ing clown to within 5 miles ot the borough of Reading, which having been examined by a committee of the board, have been fully approved. The first, on the east side of the river, commences with a dam 5 feet high, a short distance above Hamburg, thence extending downward about 10 miles, termiitates on Althouse's land, overcoming a fall about 90 feet.

About half a mile below the termination of the last Canal is be a dam feet hich, founded on a reck; at this dam the second Canal com mences on the' west side ot the river id continues down to Koenig's Rock distance of about 3 miles. Below this rock about two and three quarters of a mile will be a clam IS teet inch, also founded on a rock, which will swell the At a Dividend, lor the last six months, ot six dol lars per share in the Capital Stock of the Com pany, winch win be payable to the stockholders, or their legal representatives, after the ltilh inst. IS, South Third street. Cotton. bales Alabama Cotton, For rale by Wyman Ilaseltine, Jan 8-w No. 10, Sooth WUrrei. to complete the undertivking, Report That in their opinion the proceedings of the Managers, and th present state of the works under their care, afford strong evidence of their intelligence and industry, and of, the superior talents and assiduity of Thomas Oakes, their engineer, and that it is with much satisfaction they find the work so far advanced towards its final completion.

To accomplish which, additional funds will be requisite, and they believe a further subscription of 6000 shares will be adequate to accomplish this desit able object. The large amount of capital already expended, and which must remain unproductive until the completion of the work, forcibly points out the propriety of furnishing the necessary means to accomplish the undertaking in as short a time as possible; when in the opinion of the committee of the stockholders, they have a fair prospect of an ample remuneration. They therefore recommend the adoption of the following resolutions: Resolved, That the board of managers he requested to enter' into contracts forthwith for making a canal, locks, and other works, by such route as they may deem most eligible, froi Koenig's Rock to the lower end of the Borough of Reading, so as to complete the connection between the upper and lower sections of the improve iietits. Resolved, That an additional subscription be opened for such number of shares, as, with the six hundred and seventy shares subscribed since the 29th of November last, will make up six. thousand shares.

The first payment upon the said six thousand shares, of ten dollars on each share, to be made on the first day of February next, and that a committee of eight be appointed to procure subscribers thereto, and mjke report to an adjourned meeting to be held on the 20th instant, at 11 clock, A. M. Resolved, That the board of managers be directed to have thijir Report and Statements, and thesit Resolutions, printed and distribuxd to the Stockholders. Which is respectfully submitted. James C. isiier, Chairman. Jcihn White, Sec'ry. FOIt THE NATIONAL GAZETTE. The Anniversary meeting of the ImliRent Widows and Single Women Society was held in the Session Hoom of the First Presbyterian Church, on Thursday, Jan.

9th, 1823. The Rev. opened the meeting with prayer, alter which the following Reports were read: The rapid flight of time has brought again the season in which the social feelings are perhaps most readilr excit ed, the heart dilates with gratitude to the Great Dispenser of comforts and blessings, and the benevolent affections are in most lively exercise. 1 tho affluent it is the season of hilaiity and enjoyment; but to the indigent it comes fraught with all the pains of poverty, and anticipation of more acute suffering. lo relieve this suffering, to lessen the inevitable ills of penury, and afflictions of age, has been the endeavour of the Managers of the Indigent idows and and Single Women's Society, under the fostering care and continued liberality of their patrons, to whom they now offer their annual report.

he demands upon public charity du ring the last' year have been unusually great, but they have been met by that prompt compliance, which has ever cha-. racterized the inhabitants of this city. The severe affliction with which a sis ter institution was visited at the com ment of the year, excited the regret, the sympathy, and the benevolent feel ing of every individual, to whose heart he appeal of the orphan was sacred; ana the generosity evinced cn that, occasion must ever be a source ot tne nignest gratification to those by whom it wa exercised. Most sincerely did the Managers of the Widows Society, and the Members ol the Asyiam, sympathise with the sufferers by that melancholy- event, and they consider it a cause ot unceasing gratitude, tSat the aged and were mercUury preserved trom the rage ofthe devouririg flames. The applications lor admission into the Asylum during the past year'have een numerous, and it has been a sub ject of serious regret to the that they could not Teceive a greiur above Reading, are nearly all let out on contract, and the work in several places has actually commenced; and from this early commencement of operations on this section, we are induced to believe I the whole may be finished in the course of the next, or at farthest by the middle ot the succeeding season.

home additional improvements have been made the past season to the dam and others works heretofore erected tween Hamburgh and Mont Carbon, at the head of the navigation, in order to ender them more secure. rrom tne toregoing views it will ap pear, that the whole contemplated im provements of the Navigation of th River Schuylkill from Fair Mount toth great landing places forcoal and the other productions of the upper country, are chiefly done and under contract to be done, except about five miles and a half, at and immediately above the borough ot Heading, which, as belore mentioned is not yet contracted for; thus reducin toa very narrow compass all that remain to be done, for completing a safe slack water navigation from the City of Ph ladelphia lo the coal mines in Schuyl kill bounty, rrom the aforesaid great landings, upwards, to the mouth of Mill Creek, a distance ol two miles, the im provements may be made at a small ex pense; but-as the coal and other countr producc intended lor the Philadelphia market, will all be shipped below thi section, it is not at all necessary to rnak provision lor tins improvement at pie sent. In addition the foregoing, it may not be improper to remark, that on the Flat kock tanal, 815 inches ot water-power hasbe-MV-kd at an annual rfnt of 8 dollars per inch: also, 50 inches at an annual rent ot lour and a half dollars; and 150 nches has been exchanged in part lor twenty live acres ot land ol creat mportancc to the company, and in part as a compensation for dama ges; much additional strength has, tlu ing the last season, been Riven to the works of this place, which will have the effect of creating more confidence in the minds of persons disposed to make use ol the surplus water for manufactories and thus reimburse the company the ex pense that has been incurred. i ne two precening seasons ot epi ticmic nave not only retarded the pro gress ot our operations, but greatly in leased the amount of expenditure which, with the expense of bridges not taken into former estimates, together with the various sums paid for damages and the more durable mode ot etectine the works, will swell the amount requir ed for the perfect completion of the ia- rovement considerably beyond the amount heretotore contemplated, and render it necessary to make an addition al subscription to the capital stock. II sumcient funds are placed at the tsnosal ot tne managers, no doubt is entertained indeed the prospect is sure, that the stockholders will be entirely remunerated with an adequate income arising trom the immense trade which must necessarily be in operation on these improvements, in the course of a few years.

All which is respectfully submitted. Uy order of the Board, CAD WALADER EVANS, Pres. Philadelphia, Dec. 26, 1822. From information received from our Engineer, since the foregoing report was made out, it appears, there are fiom 4 to 500 men at work on the Canals be tween Reading and Hamburg.
