Red Cross Groups Relaxing After Holiday Season Various groups of Red Cross volunteers can relax again after a busy season of planning and preparing gifts, programs and parties for servicemen and hospital patients. The Ottawa chapter supply committee began some months ago when members accepted a quota of 100 gifts for servicemen on the high seas at Christmas tune.

The committee purchased attractive and interesting articles (games, tobacco pouches, pipes, tohet articles and other welcome gifts) and packed and shipped them to the west coast by Dec. 1 so they could be shipped out and distributed to those boys who would be en route to their posts on Christmas day and probably would not be receiving their gifts from home. Some of these gifts were donated by local people interested in the project. Residents of Zeeland, and Hudsonville also contributed gifts valued at $250 each. For the patients at Percy Jones, the committee did further shopping and found games and comfort articles which would be useful and interesting.

Again contributions from interested people made it possible for the chapter to send 100 gifts for the men who would be confined to their beds at Chrastmastome. A local manufacturing" concern sent down a large fruit basket which was to be awarded as a prize to the hos- patal ward with the best decorations. Local Horizon groupsj fraternal organizations and individuals baked cookies and cakes for panties during the holidays. The chapter arranged for special music for the holidays and the Women's Glee Club of Hope college presented a two-hour program, dividong into small groups and caroling throughout the hospital wards. A regular entertainment feature arranged by the chapter, a group of young business girls from the city, went to the hospital with special candy and cookies and games.

Local Gray Ladies have kept their scheduled appointments at the hospital at Fort Custer despite the many activities here which have demanded theor tome and energies. Some Gray Lady groups have taken cookies and cakes to serve to the men at the Veteran's Hospital. AH refreshments are contributed by persons interested in the program. The local chapter distributed toys to various families, toys which had been given by members of the South Ottawa Teachers club Maplewood Reformed church, and the Junior Welfare League. Gifts of money given to the chapter provided Christmas dinners for needy families.

All these activities were examples again of the fact that Holland people give not to the Red Cross, but through the Red Cross, to those persons who need help. Highway Deaths To Exceed 38,000 CHICAGO (UP)-- i a crashes killed Americans at a rate of 103 a day during 1952 and the total traffic deaths for the year will exceed 38,000, the fourth highest in history, the National Safety Council estimated today. The Council added that the number of deaths might be boosted considerably by tonight's Year's Eve celebration which annually takes a heavy toll ot motorists and their passengers. Council safety experts have predicted that 410 persons will die in traffic during the New Year holiday from 6 p.m. today to midnight next Sunday.

The four-day Christmas weekend claimed a record total of 588 lives on highways. Altogether, the Council said, 35,000 will be injured by the' time the holiday season ends. Since some of the injured will die, the experts believe the toll of dead for the period will exceed 1,200. The Council warned that it was possible that the number of traffic deaths for the year might exceed the total of 38,089 deaths In 1936 and thus become the third highest in history. "Good weather over most of the nation in December would tend to boost the toll, since travel bas.

not been curtailed as it was during last year's blizzards," Council statement FAMOUS PEOPLE WHO DIED DURING 1952 3, died several after lrth at Zeeland hospital. 22.
