Songs on the pair's new album "So What!" sure to be played during their show tonight at the Blessed Oliver Plunkett in Carlisle are less zany than previous releases. Fear not: Most of Jimmy and Alvis Pheromone's new songs are funny. But they have keyed in on some serious issues such as the environment that they bypassed on their first two albums.

For instance, there's "Eisenhow- er," which focuses on the former president's military buildup and blames him for turning the United States into a bullying interventionist. And there's the hilarious "Ecologi lyrics and folk-style music. And they have fun, too. "Put Your Tennis Shoes On (and Dance)" is basically instrumental; the line notes call it the pair's "new Top 40 hit" In "Where's the Service?" mostly singsonged a la "Yuppie Drone" Jimmy relates the trouble he has at a computer store trying to upgrade his 5-year-old PC. He concludes service is "gone, gone, gone like the age of the mastodon." Replacing the "Reagan songs" that fans have enjoyed is the cover "Dance of the Young Republicans." The Pheromones wrote their own final verse about a hypocritical woman who enjoys the rights won "by people she despised" and fought by "men she'd idolize." Anyone interested in experiencing an unusual evening of entertainment will want to catch the pair's show tonight at the Plunkett, 10 N.

Pitt St But the brothers throw in their typical humor. A later verse suggests, "We will propagate ourselves through auto-copulation." They have updated their trademark "Pheromone Love." Now, it's "Pher-emone Withdrawal" time: miss the way she screams and yells But most of all I miss her smells!" The CD songsheet for "So Far.i.So What!" describes The Pheremones as "part stand-up comics, part beat poets, part "new-wave folkies," part rap-masters, part incrediably-good lyricists and a very large part social and political satirists" which only goes to show how hard they are to pin down. They are independent, opinionated guys who are trying to spotlight what they see as the world's ills without ramming it down their listeners' throats, through some catchy, funny The CD for "So What!" features this offbeat art. LP reflects individual, romantic concerns 'The gigs become the most important part of the day; everything else tends to be very is 1 1 Collins1 NEW YORK (AP) Phil Collins writes his album titles last, to reflect the mood of the music. His new album is Seriously." The first single, "Another Day in Paradise," is about the homeless.

There also are songs about famine and apartheid. Recalling his last solo album, "No Jacket Required" in 1985, Collins says, "Apart from the little story of a Chicago hotel that wouldn't let me into the bar because I wasn't wearing a jacket, I thought the album was hotter, more danceable material than my previous two. I wanted to do something now that had a little bit more depth to it, for a variety of reasons." One is that it follows his acting and songs in the movie "Buster," a film about the Great Train Robbery. "Not a light subject, but the way the film treated that subject it was kind of a romantic comedy," he says. "That was fine because it was an acting role.

When I got involved with the music, I think the results to the casual person in the street were maybe a little light. "I was working with Lamont Dozi-er, a hero of mine, and it was a film project. It didn't bother me "A Groovy Kind of Love' was a '60s song. I think a lot of people thought it was a Phil Collins solo project and felt I was getting very, very light That wasn't where I was coming from. "I thought, 'Let me put that right with my next That was one jr J- -1 1'.

V' Phil Collins considers Seriously" is his best album since "Face Value." He writes to please himself. (AP) Lenny Kravitz got start with California Boys Choir Souwd ranee aren't forgotten either. Take the strange "Back On All Fours," which implies the world is going downhill: "We have ceased to educate and Now face devastation Evolution is a means of Coping with this The chorus is a discordant, "We are going backwards Put your best foot backwards." Their daughter, Lily, 10 months, will go on the 1990 tour and his older children, a daughter 17 and son 13, will join them in Australia on their spring break. While recording, Collins says there are technical things that can thicken the voice, such as echoes. "They're security blankets some singers use to mask inadequacies," he says.

"I was guilty of that My voice became a bit of a sound rather than just the voice. I think my singing has gotten better over the last few years. I expose it more on this album; I use less effects." Since "Buster," which came out in late 1988, Collins produced three songs on Stephen Bishop's album and played on "Woman in Chains," Tears for Fears' current single. "Eric Clapton, who is one of my best friends, was making his album around the same time I did my album. He played on mine; I played on his," Collins says.

He didn't expect his success and it has always surprised him. "If you take things for granted, that's when the trouble starts. "People say, 'Why is it what you do appeals to other I have no idea. If I knew, then I'd probably screw it up," he says. "Maybe I write lyrics that are very direct People understand them and relate to them.

Maybe that's why what happens happens. Apart from that you do it to please yourself first If other people like it that's great" his peers was junior high school. For him, it was the California Boys Choir. "I did that for three years," Kravitz says. "A lot of people think of a boy's choir as something like a glee club, but this was a traditional European boy's choir.

It's a whole way of life. It's like the army, but it's music. It's very disciplined." He laughs. "My first concert was the opening of the Hollywood Bowl, in 1977 or '78. It was the Mahler Third Symphony, my first gig the Hollywood Bowl, a million people out there, this symphony and all.

It was wild." Then the inevitable happened. His voice changed. "You get what's called which is basically being booted," he explains. "There's a whole ceremony. It's really sad.

Then I went off to high school. I joined the choir, I don't remember if I got kicked out or I left Anyway, I left all that behind and got back into rock roll, started a band, all the normal stuff." For a few years, he made demos, played on other people's demos, played with Herb Alpert, almost got signed seven or eight times and went through several different musical phases. "I didn't know what was going on, I didn't know what to do," Kravitz recalls. '1 played a lot of instruments, I could play different styles, but I didn't know if I should do funk or this or that or whatever. I went through this phase where I couldn't decide whether I wanted to do this real English-sounding Tears for Fears Simple Minds sort of He's having fun with this.

He's well on his way to being the poster child for the '90s, as a matter of fact half-black, half-white, with the sort of face that is not cate-gorizable as either. He grew up on the Upper East Side, but was as every bit as comfortable with his Bed-Stuy roots. He embodies downtown bohemian coolchic, but knows more about Beethoven and Mahler than the aver after another, one plane after another. I never get bored with the gigs. They're always different I can hear people say, "He's bored with first-class It does get boring.

I'd rather be at home doing the shopping." Speaking of boredom, Collins says, "There is always a risk that people get bored with Phil Collins. That reached a peak in 1985-86 when we had five Top 5 singles with 'No Jacket Required' and Genesis' "Invisible Touch had five Top 5. The voice was constantly on the radio. There was a severe danger of overkill, which is why I took a year away from music and did "People still played the records on the radio," he says. "The thing that sticks in my mind is a guitar player said Milwaukee had a guaranteed Phil Collins-free weekend.

When radio stations guarantee not to play you, you know you're in trouble. "I don't want to not work because people play the records too much." Collins recorded some of Seriously" in Los Angeles. Kravitz has a million stories, some of them touching, some of the funny, all of them interesting.

It would take 10 pages to recount them all, but the one thing that you get out of all of the stories is a sense of good karma, for lack of a better word. This, surprisingly enough, is the same "vibe," as he says, one gets from the album. Kravitz got his professional start at an age when the challenge facing "isn't black enough." 6. Most of the album reflects romantic and other individual concerns.

"I think they're my best collection of songs since "Face Collins says, referring to his first solo album in 1981. "Hello I Must Be Going!" followed it a year later. "After all I've done, it is nice to know the best is still yet to come really," Collins says. "The album was great fun to write. Not having done it for five years, many of them came easily.

There was a lot to come out" He'll tour until September. "I'd like to do another film the end of 1990. We've got to do a Genesis album the beginning of 1991. 1 don't want to get involved with a big tour again so soon after the solo tour. "By that time, I'll be almost 40.

I'd like to do another album, maybe; I'd like to concentrate on films. I think we'll tour with Genesis because it's part of what we do. It won't be, if I can help it, anywhere near as long as Genesis' last tour, which was 10 months. 'The gigs become the most important part of the day, everything else tends to be very boring, one hotel age music teacher. Kravitz is also the guy with one outstanding record to his credit one that is every bit as difficult to categorize as he is.

It's not black, it's not white, it's not gray. When "Let Love Rule" came out you couldn't hear Kravitz's name without hearing about his wife, actress Lisa Bonet as well Now the record has gone beyond the hype. It's been on the charts for two months and is climbing steadily. And Kravitz is setting out on tour with Tom Petty all of which is 7T. Erasure, touring in support of the "Wild!" album, quickly sold out tonight's Madison Square Garden appearance as well as their Los Angeles March 11 stint at the Forum. They've recently announced a second date (March 12) at the Forum.

"Until that time, I didn't know what I was supposed to do and then I saw myself in her because we're really similar. She had this vibe that was really cool and laid-back and spiritual.

She's a real flower child, not like the '60s or a throwback or something, but a real flower child and she inspired me. I just started writing in this little spare room in her house. All of a sudden, this stuff just started coming." While Bonet was on hiatus, she and Kravitz came to New York so he could do some recording. Then word got out As he puts it, "Because of the hype, the phone started ringing off the hook," with calls from people who liked his stuff but said "it wasn't black enough" for years, but wanted to hear it now. He doesn't take it seriously or personally and accepts it as a matter of course.
