"Our show doesn't necessarily deal with their problems the way teachers or parents might," says Henson, who is president of Jim Henson Productions and son of its late founder.

"But these kids are at an age when probably most of their time is spent with their peers, and most of the influence on them is from that arena. With 'CityKids' we want to let kids contemplate and discuss issues as they really do out there in the street." "The concepts, storylines, music and core cast come from our organization," says Laurie Meadoff, president and founder of The CityKids Foundation. "Whether they're working on- or off-camera, these kids believe the values that the show stands for." Also an executive producer of the show, Meadoff sits in her crowded office at CityKids' Tribeca home base, which is in stark contrast to Henson Productions' plush Upper East Side headquarters. And unlike on his powerful firm, until a flashy showboat played by Denzel Washington agrees to represent him. Courtroom drama alternates with the film's deeper subject, the scourge of a pitiless disease.

"Iron Will" (PG, 109 minutes) is another formula picture about a plucky kid who risks all in a dangerous competition. Mackenzie Astin stars as a 17-year-old who vows to save the family farm by winning the $20,000 prize in a 500-mile dog sled race. Cliches the way, but fun for younger viewers. South dismisses all those cases where his play makes no difference. For example, West may have a void, the singleton eight, the singleton ace, the A-Q or the A-Q-8 and in all these cases South fails whether he plays the jack or the king. This leaves those hands where West was dealt the A-8 or Q-8 (in which case tossing a coin is as good a solution as any), and hands where West started with the singleton queen of spades. The answer that emerges is that the king is the correct percentage play, since it wins in two cases where West started with the Q-8 or the singleton queen while it loses only when West started with the A-8. In effect, declarer eliminates from consideration all hands where the missing trumps are divided 2-2 or 4-0 because his cause is either hopeless or amounts to a 50-50 guess.

The only cases that matter are those where the trumps divide 3-1 and West has a singleton honor. If West's singleton honor is the ace, South 's position is hopeless whether he plays the jack or king. But if West's singleton honor is the queen. South 's position is not hopeless at all, since he can play the king, catch the queen, and so make the contract it it is Mom, I CAN Mother Goose and 0FFTOTH5 FtEA MARKET, z-3 Almanac Today is Thursday, Feb. 3, the 34th day of 1994.

Most books on play tell you how to handle certain combinations of cards that occur very frequently. But because these books can't treat all possible combinations, it becomes important to learn to solve such problems all by yourself. 'CityKids' the boyish, measured way in which Brian Henson speaks (often tagging what he says with "Does that make any which it invariably does), Meadoff expresses herself in enthusiastic torrents. "These kids want to change the way they're portrayed in the media," she says. "Just as with the CityKids Foundation, the show includes kids from all walks of life. What they believe is, certain issues are cross-cultural just as pain is cross-cultural no matter where you belong, no matter who you're with." The only hitch with "CityKids" thus far is that it's been hard to find. Since arriving last fall, the show too often has been benched by college football telecasts.

While otherwise praising ABC, Meadoff calls the network's hit-or-miss scheduling symptomatic of how adults let youngsters down. "Don't disappear on kids," she says. "Make a commitment, PLEASE. Be there for them." And help them be there for each other, she might have added. "CityKids" proves how tasty the results can be.

"What does it take to be a woman or a man?" asks a reggae-flavored song. "Will I ever know? Will I understand?" It doesn't supply an answer. But the song, like the show, is about broaching the issue rather than finding its quick fix. "On the show there isn't always a happy ending," says executive producer Brian Henson. "But kids aren't looking to escape from life, they are looking to understand it." Filmed in New York City, the live-action portions of "CityKids" are intertwined with riotous segments featuring brand-new Muppet characters.

It's a triumph of truth-in-labeling. Exploring "whassup" with voracious curiosity, the show's young troupe is responsible for its stories, songs, performances and soul. And like those who create it, any youngster who tunes in "CityKids" broadcast Saturdays at noon on ABC is going to eat this stuff up.

Of course, grownups aren't completely absent from the "CityKids" scene. The adults of Jim Henson Productions act as creative overseers. But their partner is the CityKids Foundation, a New York City-based multicultural youth organization that serves as a laboratory from which the show draws inspiration, direction and personnel.
