AH MORRIS AS "MISS MCI.TON Clara Morris's playing Is much like Ma-caul ay's logic; If you admit Its premises the folds of It will wrap you Irresistibly. There Is no Implication In this that her playing la false. "The end Of plating both at the first and now was and Is to hold, as.t were, the mirror up to nature." This Miss Morris's playing does.

to siythe conditions of htr pi ay are unnatural. The strained attention of crowded houses, the tea. imony of tears, prove the contrary. Her plejs are not a photograph of actual life, but are typical cf It they "hold as 'twere the mirror up to nature:" In this typical way does Morris portray, and this Is true acting. It is acting impelled by genius.

This actrets does not mertly act a part. The stress of emotion which the can eummsn at will to play upen her own sensitive natare ahe tranfers by the power of Imagination Into the exprecslon ot the character she; undertakes, and guided by' (the intellect, she the anguteh ot a Multon," or the rage ota "Cora." This Is genius, the creative power in arl. But In Miss Morris it Is of narrow range It covers Only part of art, and that not tfcp highest. It Is, iodeed, with her a sort cf coane, Inner warmth that enables her to depict the harrowing and Ignoble shapes of suffering; the morbid anatomr of the the repul ive forms ot physical woe. It Introduces us to the dark side of bnmtn nature; on the spiritual side to that In which unclean creatures ds-ell; on the physical side to that which physicians see.

Art, In Its fullness aui ultimate aim, is something more than this; It teaches the beautlTu1, it re-creates. There Is but little of this sort of exposition within the range ot Mioa Morris's genlup, atd Iheimpiesjlon she leavea is not that- of an example glvep which Inspires, but more a feeling of awe at this wonderful woman who can with such searching insight pierce the marrow ot gross suffering aa-so translate It as to make othera feel its poignancy. Particularly, there Is little to say ot her performance- of "Miss Multon." There was an excess of nervoutneee In It, the impressions being wrought too much by minute maoifeata-tloLs, which are the chief refuge ot sterility Instead of by broad general effects which are the resource ot plenitude. But we are told MU Morris has not only her personation but htr person to care for, and lu such an instance a tendency I over-act or underact may follow InevlUbiy certain physical condliijna. Every 11 sw corcdel, it may well be doubted if more perfect charactertzitlon Is possible' to any one than such as she gavr Ut Ita minute beauties far, far cu'Anm'iered Its minute defect.

Htr attitudes always eloquent, were sometimes e'octrlc. S3 can drop a handkerchief at such a tlma la surh a wsy as to produce the effect of explosion. Her face, it any thing too moMle, lu aa inttant rues the whole gamut of the emotions. Ths hunted look in her eyev, the shock of feeling expressed a half fall against a table, a chair; the graceful sweep ot an atm, or turn of a wrist, were pictures flatbln.ii through the eye to the heart far more powerfully than any eloqience with the text could. But with the It is to be noted that Mias Morris still retains the ringing force of wh'ch with a shade more of mellowness would be bell like.

I The support was exceedingly good. Jd. Byrton, with the exception of. a tendency to gabble bis lines in vehement passage, od become unintelligible, gave a manly and forceful parformai ce, full of dignity and power; and a'l, with an especial men nionot the children, contributed their share to a well-acted p'ay. The audience was large, and so absorbed that applause was hardly tolerated, except after ths curtain.

THE COKCIBT AT PLISf)UTH CBCBCU The secomd entertainment ot the Indianapolis lecture course was the concert lis', nlht at Plymouth church by the Indiana poll Masical and Sjmphony societies, directed by Prof. Clark.
