A surprisingly mature version of the Mark V'-'-- tV wit 'Brule Sioux' by Lyn Aus Roy. Comedy will bring opera season to a close MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Opera's 30th anniversary season comes to a riotous finale with Gilbert and Sullivan's celebrated comedy, "The Pirates of Penzance," April 30 through May 9 at the State Theatre. Sung in English, this wicked satire on social mores combines Sullivan's immortal melodies with the charm and wit of Gilbert's lyrics to create one of the most beloved operettas in the repertoire. "Pirates" chronicles the adventures of a pirate crew and the efforts of one of their own, Frederic, to break free and devote his life to eradicating the scourge of piracy. Along his journey, Frederic encounters a family of beautiful sisters.

He falls in love with one and enlists the help of their blustery father, Major-General Stanley, and a band of bumbling police to convince the pirates to forsake their lawless lives. Tickets range from $11 to $37 and are available by calling 612-989-5151. Discounts for students and senior citizens. N.D., S.D. artists invited to join quilt effort ABERDEEN, S.D.

Works from North and South Dakota artists are needed for the creation of an enormous "art quilt" for this year's Dakota Arts Congress, Oct. 15-17 in Aberdeen. The quilt, comprised of individual works of Dakota artists, will hang in the Aberdeen Convention Center during the Arts Congress event. Congress organizers say the quilt will symbolize the commonality of Dakota artists while celebrating the diversity of their individual art. Organizers say the quilt will be available after the Arts Congress for display at North and South Dakota events celebrating art and artists.

They also hope the quilt will be used for educational purposes in schools across both states. Artists are encouraged to submit any medium permanently attached or connected to a 20-inch-by-20-inch piece of fabric. The deadline for entries is July 1. The completed quilt will be photographed and made into a poster print listing the names of the artists involved. For more information or to request an entry form, contact the Aberdeen Area Arts Council, 401 N.

New business on the agenda includes possible grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the schedule for Office On Wheels in September. Joint recital features piano, percussion University of Mary faculty members Marylee Prebys and Scott Prebys will present a joint piano percussion recital at 7:30 April 18 in Heskett Hall on the U-Mary campus. Both performers will perform Boris Pillin's "Duo for Percussion and Piano." The program will conclude with a marimbavibraphone duet, "Carousel" by Dave Samuels. The duo will be assisted by percussionist Chris Brucker. Local artist is the People's Choice piece of Bertha Gipp for the North Dakota Nurses Association. Gipp received the national award for minority nurses in 1992.

Aus Roy's portrait will hang in the permanent gallery of the Nurses Association building in Washington. An exhibit of Aus Roy's work will hang in the Bismarck Art Galleries Association Art Center from May 4 to May 28. Opening reception will be May 9. Richard Gere only $3,000 for a week with Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman." But Robert Redford is willing to fork over a cool million for just one night with the married Demi Moore in "Indecent Proposal." Who says implants aren worth it? What is missing in this oh-so-solemn investigation about the strength of marital bonds is a sense of humor. Moore and her husband (Woody Harrelson) are a couple of yuppies down on their luck and bank balance.

In a profoundly stupid move, they decide to go to Las Vegas to mane $50,000, which will allow them to hang onto some ocean-view property in Los Angeles. It is there that billionaire Redford recognizes a woman for the taking; he's convinced that he can buy anything. Now I believe that most couples placed in a similar situation would react one of two ways: They would either view it as a complete lark and maybe offer two nights for $2 million, or reject the cash outright. But Moore and Harrelson do neither. They spend their time and ours in a soul-searching night before, obviously, deciding to go ahead.

The fine comedy "Honeymoon in Vegas" treated an almost identical situation Sarah Jessica Parker at $65,000 for a weekend to settle a gambling debt with the humor that is so lacking in "Indecent Proposal." About the only smart element in this script is that the million-dollar night takes place offscreen. But that's because icon Redford, playing a variation on his "Great GatsDy" character, wouldn't have it any other way. Either he didn't want to look old in bed or he didn't want to manifest the evil of his character. The offensive premise of "Indecent Proposal" might have been ameliorated by a sense of humor, or if Moore had been the smartest character in the movie. But she isn't.

She doesn't out-think Redford. Designed for older kids, this script confronts Huck with an abusive father and racial injustice. The relationship between Elijah Wood as Huck and Courtney B. Vance as the slave Jim is powerful, as are their reveries on the big river. PG V2 JACK THE BEAR. A well-meaning but confused story aDout a single iamer luanny uevitoj coming 10 grips with his own demons while attemntine to hane unto his two young sons.

The TV ads for the film suggest a comedy, but the tone of the picture is very dark at times and not consistent. PG-13. LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE. A fresh, mystical Mexican film about how one young woman struggles against a tight family tradition that would deny her the love of her life in favor of caring for her older mother. Transferring her passion into the food she makes, she achieves a nobility that is intoxicating.

A most original film. Subtitles. R. V2 RICH IN LOVE. A special film that gives us a host of fresh characters in a young woman's (Kathryn Erbe) reminiscences about growing up in a South Carolina family where the father (Albert Finney) and mother (Jill Clay burgh) have a busted marriage.

Into this travail come characters who are in love, and the result is a film that spins over a wide emotional range. Nicely directed, as usual with a fine sense of place, by Bruce Beresford. PG-13. THE SANDLOT. A pleasant bit of adolescent nostalgia involving the new kid in town and his initial inability to play baseball.

Once he up to snuff, however, other problems arise, including his father's precious autographed baseball and the "killer" dog that growls on the other side of the outfield fence. PG.
