"Rights of Passage," published in 1980, won the Booker Prize, one of Britain's Hi Golding: Famed most prestigious literary prizes. Born in Cornwall, southern England, on Sept. 19, 1911, Golding studied science and then English at Oxford University.

After graduation, he joined the Royal Navy, serving on cruisers and destroyers and developing an enduring love of the sea. In a rare interview, Golding once talked about death: "I'd rather there wasn't an afterlife, really. I'd much rather not be me for thousands of years. Me? Hah!" He is survived by his wife, Ann, a son and a daughter. Funeral arrangements were not announced.

Shepard, who moderated the 75-minute proceedings, said one of Slayton's last requests was that such a memorial service not be a dirge. "And he said, and I quote, 'And I don't want any SOB talking longer than two Shepard said. In accordance with those wishes, the service was upbeat, with colleagues and friends sharing funny anecdotes and a Houston Dixieland band whipping through some of Slayton's favorite tunes. Glenn, now a U.S. senator, joked that, after 16 years of waiting, the Apollo-Soyuz mission training was easy for Slayton, but "it was learn-: ing to speak Russian that was the hard part." Slayton relished his nine days in space.

Schmidt, 58, Menoken, died June 18, 1993, in a Bismarck i hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. John Owens officiating, Burial will be in Menoken Ceme-1 tery.

Melvin Schmidt was active in Cenex for 30 years. Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Schmidt was born June 6, 1935, near Napoleon, the son of Joe i G. and Margaret (Richter) Schmidt. In 1940 he and his family i moved to the Menoken area where I he attended Telfer School. He attended St.

Mary's High School and graduated in 1953. On Jan. 4, 1960, he married Quirina Jacobs at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. They I farmed south- of Menoken. He was a member of Bismarck Eagles, Elks and Knights of Colum- bus.

He served on the board of di-! rectors of Cenex for 30 years and was presently serving as chairman. He also served on the board of di- rectors of Capital Electric. He was chairman of Burleigh County i Farmers Union and Telfer Town-! ship, and was a member of Nation-1 al Farmers Organization and Farm Bureau. He was a former council member of St. Hildegard's Church.

He also served as a trustee for St. 1 Hildegard's. He is survived by his wife, Qui-1 rina; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Corrine and Mike Heaton, Jeanne and Kevin Becker, and Margaret Schmidt, all of Bis- marck, Lori and Gerard Jacob, 1 Linton, and Patricia Schmidt, Me-! noken; one son, James Schmidt, Menoken; his mother, Margaret i Schmidt, Bismarck; seven grand- children; three brothers and sis-1 ters-in-law, Clarence and; Rosemary, Bismarck, Julius and 1 Laverne, Edina, and Leo and Kathy, Bismarck; two sisters and brothers-in-law, LouAnn and Glenn Tsujihara, Roseville, and Diane and Keith Grotewold, Bismarck. "Deke" Slayton in space gathered Saturday for a jovial tribute to the persistent pioneer who waited 16 years to fly. "We come here today to celebrate a life and what a life it was," said NASA Administrator Daniel S.

Gold-in, speaking to hundreds of people jammed into an auditorium at Johnson Space Center. "Ultimately the lesson we can draw from Deke Slayton's example is simply this: Never give up. Never, nev Slayton: Memorialized. er, never give up. Never give up." Slayton, a 69-year-old Sparta, died in his sleep June 13 at his Texas home.

He was diagnosed as having a brain tumor last year. Medical treatment forced the cancer into remission, but the disease recently reappeared. A World War II combat pilot, Slayton was selected by NASA in 1959 as one of America's seven original astronauts, who years later became the subjects of Tom Wolfe's book "The Right Stuff." Shawn Stuber Shawn Stuber, 21, Fargo, died June 12, 1993, at Lake Ashtabula, rural Valley City, as a result of a drowning accident. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, with burial in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey.

Mr. Stuber was born May 29, 1972, at Fargo. He lived in the Fargo area. He is survived by one son, Patrick, Fargo; one daughter, Tiffany, Fargo; his mother, Lois Stuber, Fargo; two sisters, Sheila Stuber and Sherry. Stuber, both of West Fargo; and his grandparents, Irvin and Minnie Helm, Harvey.

Rev. Otto Iszler NEW LEIPZIG The Rev. Otto Iszler, 86, New Leipzig, died June 17, 1993, in the Elgin nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Monday at Emmanual Lutheran Church, New Leipzig, with burial in the church cemetery.

Otto was born Jan. 18, 1907, in South Russia. He was ordained on Aug. 13, 1933, and served as a Lutheran minister until his retirement in 1975. He is survived by his wife, Helen; one daughter, Grace Ashenfelt-er, Champaigne, three sons, Martin, Portage, Helmuth, East Glacier, and Paul, Colorado Springs, three brothers, George, Bowman, Gotthilf and Herbert, both of New Leipzig; and two sisters, Rocelia Schock, New Leipzig, and Helen Rauscher, Roscoe, S.D.

"Deke had a secret. He learned that the true measure of a man's worth is the ability to turn adversity into advantage. He did that," Carpenter said. Slayton supervised NASA's astronaut corps, first as chief astronaut and then as director of flight crew operations during the Apollo moon missions. He was in charge of choosing the Apollo crews: who was flying with whom, and in what order.

Otto Schlafman Otto Schlafman, 71, 606 Dohn Bismarck, died June 19, 1993, at his home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Otto Schlafman enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. -noon Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

Mr. Schlafman was born May 27, 1922, at Pickardville, the son of Carl and Emilia (Laib) Schlafman. He was raised in Pickardville and graduated from Mercer High School. He graduated from Capital Commercial College in Bismarck. On March 6, 1946, he married Ruby Neumiller in Mercer.

From 1946 to 1949 they farmed north of Regan. They moved to Bismarck in 1949 where he worked for Super Valu Stores Inc. until his retirement in' 1982. He enjoyed camping and fishing, going for walks, collecting brass and spending time with his grand-' children. He was a member of Teamsters Local No.

123, Faith Lutheran Church, and a retiree member of International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehouse Men and Helpers of America, Chapter 123-R. He is survived by his wife, Ruby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and G. Ross Schlabach, Glendive, and Pamela and Thomas Vollmuth, Stanton; one sister and brother-in-law, Darlene and Ronald Schlafman Sahr, Jamestown; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Bertha, Bismarck, John and Laura, Turtle Lake, Reuben and Martha, Jamestown, Arnold and Nanna, Newport, and Eugene and Marilyn, Detroit Lakes, his mother-in-law, Katharine Neumiller, Bismarck; five grandchildren, Michael, Tamara and Scott Schlabach, and Kirk and Beth Vollmuth. Jacobson, 76, Minot, died June 17, 1993, in Valley City. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot, with burial in Rose Valley Lutheran Cemetery, rural Des Lacs. Joette Elizabeth Hartgrove was born July 5, 1916 at Schafer. She and her husband farmed near Minot.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Abrahamson, Plaza, and Marvel Bakken, Belcourt; three sons, Lane and David, both of Minot, and Roger, Stanton; and two sisters, Irma Swanson, Lemmon, S.D., and Gladys Calkins, Watford City. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Billings, Mont. Fay Dennis enjoyed camping and fishing.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue at the church one hour before services at the church. Fay L. Molter was born Dec. 26, 1937, at Marshfield, the daughter of Theodore and Caroline (Becker) Molter.

She graduated from Billings High School in 1956. She married Terry Dennis in 1957 in Billings. They lived in Bismarck, where she worked at Burleigh County Auditor's Office until retiring in December 1992 due to her health. She enjoyed fishing, camping and sewing. She also like watching Tuesday Night Boxing.

She is survived by her special, loving friend, Rick Bender, Bismarck: two sons, Rick and Butch, both of Bismarck; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Bill Jones, La Habra, Joleen and LaVern Gross, Lincoln, and Karen and Joe Beckler Mandan; seven grandchildren, Leann, Amanda and Jennifer Jones, Michael James and Nikki Gross, and Krystal Beckler: her mother, Caroline Molter; and one sister, Arelia Gigioux, New Orleans. He was 81. Matthew Evans, chairman of Golding's publisher, Faber and Faber, said the likely cause of death was a heart attack. "It happened very suddenly," said Golding's son-in-law, Terrell Carver.

The writer died at his home in Perranarworthal, near Falmouth in southern England. Golding won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1983 and was knighted five years ago. For a man who once said his biggest affliction was "the inability to write poetry," Golding made a major contribution to English literature. His novels have been reprinted many times and are required reading at many colleges and schools. Golding suffered a string of rejections before "Lord of the Flies," his first work, was published in 1954.

The tale is about a group of boys who survive the crash-landing of an airplane and try to survive on an uninhabited island, where they split into different tribes and begin fighting one another.
