DAKOTA Monday, September 3, 1990 The Bismarck Tribune Pag7B Centennial quilt, protected by poison, waits for action By DALE WETZEL Associated Press Writer County auditor, said she will be attending the North Dakota Association of Counties' November meeting in Dickinson to buttonhole people about joining the foundation's board of directors. "No one really knows a lot about the Legacy Foundation. It's been in the news, but mostly in our area," she said. There have been suggestions that the quilt be ripped apart, with its individual county pieces displayed in courthouses. But the Centennial Commission and the foundation want it kept whole, and Tennyson brooks no suggestion of the idea.

"It would be stupid to tear it apart," she said. "It is much too beautiful." to display the giant bedcover, said Streich, who is its chairwoman. The foundation is awaiting Internal Revenue Service approval of its application for tax-exempt status, Streich said. "I guess the next step after that would be to make ourselves better known," Streich said last week. Streich, who is the Bottineau gigantic map of North Dakota.

It depicts features from each of the state's 53 counties. The Guinness Book of World Records certified it as the world's largest quilt in 1988, a year before North Dakota celebrated its centennial. Leona Tennyson, a 76-year-old Antler ranch owner, organized the quilting, which eventually involved 7,000 people. Even Gov. George Sinner got into the act, holding a news conference on the Capitol mall to promote the project.

Tennyson, who has the quilt rolled and stored atop some tables in -her garage, swears it is "as good a shape now as it's ever been." She has spread poison liberally around the bedcover to guard against ma rauding rodents. Tennyson exhibits the quilt occasionally, stuffing it into her van for trips to towns that want to view it. She drove it to Mohall July 12, spreading the quilt on the floor of the town's school gymnasium. The quilt's east and west borders had to be rolled up to make it fit, she said. Tennyson is hauling the quilt to Rugby on Sept.

21. "The (high school) football team is going to unload it for me," she said. The state Centennial Commission, which solicited $10,000 to help finance the project, last week voted to turn the quilt over to the newly formed North Dakota Legacy Foundation. The group, of which Tennyson is a member, will be examining ways North Dakota's centennial quilt, a huge and ballyhooed symbol of the state's 100th birthday, spends most of its time these days in a garage, surrounded by rat poison. But admirers of the bedcover, which two years ago was declared the world's largest, still are patching together ideas to put the quilt on display.

"We need to find out how much interest is out there," said Mae Streich, who heads a group that is looking into the quilt's future possibilities. The quilt, which weighs 800 pounds and is V-k times as large as a basketball court, is essentially a Minot State University Criminal Justice Courses -Now offered at Bismarck State College-Fall Schedule 1990 SOC278 Social Research Methods 4 QH Begins Wednesday, September 5, Air Force mother prepares to leave daughter for gulf duty 9:30 PM, Room 218, Schafer CJ330 Theories' of Punishment 4 QH Begins Monday, September 10, 1990 PM, Room 217, Schafer Hall, BSC Keith Wolberg A. Leola Taylor and her 3-year-old daughter, Krys-tal, are packed and ready to go their separate ways. Taylor, a nursing supervisor at the Minot Air Force Base Hospital, has been "tasked" a military term meaning to be prepared for deployment to the Middle East. She is packed and ready to go; a duffel bag and pillow lie next to her door. Krystal is also packed and ready to be deployed to grandmother's house in Mobile, Ala.

Taylor's nursing skills could be required to support Operation Desert Shield, the code name given to U.S. military involvement in Saudi Arabia resulting from the Aug. 2 invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. An avowed "career woman," Taylor is ready to serve the government and put her experience and skills to use. She has no regrets, but does admit it could be "tough" leaving Krystal.

Taylor has been stationed in Minot for four years. Her husband, Senior Master Sgt. Charles Taylor, is now stationed in Japan. He was initially shocked to learn that his wife had been tasked and his first response was she couldn't go. Who was going to care for their daughter? "He came back to reality he knows this is part of our job," Taylor said.
