The music, by Margaret Rachlin Pine, is all right, but doesn't add much except the sight of Zaida sounding and looking like Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof." Lynn Polan directed. In the final scene, Young David is sent to an uncle's when his grandfather develops pneumonia. When he returns, Zaida and the horse are gone and Harry tells his son they've gone to Heaven. David is sure his grandfather wouldn't have left without telling him. The play's final line, "I cried because my father told me such a terrible lie," somehow misses the mark, however.

A bigger fault is having a narrator, who is David grown up, on stage too much of the time. That Chris Ceraso plays this in an "look at me, I'm an actor" mode makes it more intrusive. But "Lies My Father Told Me" does have impact as a whole, presenting an ever-cherished memory of a loving human tie. NEW YORK AP) "Lies My Father Told Me," based on a 1975 movie, opened this week at the of -Broadway Jewish Repertory Theater as a play with a few songs. It is a charming story of a boy and his grandfather.

Braden Danner, who is a fifth grader and starred in the Broadway revival of "Oliver," is excellent as Young David, as is Mark Zeller as the grandfather. Sophie Hayden and Stephen Singer are good in supporting roles as Young David's parents, Annie and Harry. The lies told by Harry through the play are mostly to his in-laws as he seeks money to finance his inventions, permanently creased pants and a new type of cufflink.
