Children who have experienced a traumatic incident in the past, children who are grieving a personal tragedy, and children who are ill are more susceptible to anxiety regarding other events.

Children need personal reassurance. Tell them what you are doing to ensure their safety; tell your children what their daycare provider or teacher is doing to maintain safety; and tell children what they can do to enhance their own safety. Don't overdo it. Maintain normal routines for eating, sleeping, and play. Keep an eye open for any signs of anxiety.

These guidelines have been provided by the Family Resource Center at Minneapolis Children's Hospital and Clinics for Family Information Services. dren is cumulative. Understand that children of different ages react differently. Younger children may react by showing more separation anxiety when their parents leave them at daycare or school. Older children may present a rough exterior or act out aggressive behavior.

Provide extra emotional support for your children. Review safety precautions and practice routines of going to and from school with them. Teach your children that they should go to an adult that they trust if they feel threatened in any situation. Avoid infecting your children's lives with your own anxiety. If you are feeling overwhelmed by anxiety caused by traumatic events, take steps to deal with your own feelings before your children are affected.

Be aware of other areas of children's lives that may make them especially vulnerable to fears regard system. Grazing forages is the cheapest form of gain for cattle producers. Without forage, the potential for profit rapidly declines. What does this mean for you? Plan your grazing system so as not to over graze pastures. Cool season forages such as brome and fescue should be grazed to a height no shorter than three inches.Warm season grasses need to be grazed even higher, around eight inches in height.

Grazing lower than these recommended heights results in a lack of photosynthetic area for the production of food needed for the plant to survive and retain vigor. Over grazing also reduces root development for moisture and nutrient uptake necessary to maintain the stand. Next week, 111 discuss how maintenance of the forage helps maintain the animal. Deer Permits In response to landowner complaints and increased deer-vehicle accidents, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Commission voted last week to increase the total number of deer hunting permits available this fall. Beginning in 1999 as well, KDWP will extend the deer season by 10 days to assist with controlling the deer population.

Parents need to know that children may react strongly to these events and should be prepared to discuss their child's thoughts and feelings.

The following are some guidelines to help parents. Be honest about the situation. Give your children information at their own level and put it in context. Explain that even though frightening things happen to children every once in awhile, most children go about their day with no harm. Don't describe unlikely scenarios that would unnecessarily frighten your children.

It helps to know what information your child is getting. Monitor their exposure to television reports, and help explain what they see when they do watch television. While being involved in the beef industry and agriculture in general isn't always easy, agriculture and the beef industry are still of great importance to the state of Kansas and the nation as a whole. Agriculture is the nation's largest industry and the cattle industry is the largest segment of American agriculture. Kansas ranks third in the number of commercial cattle processed, third in the value of live animals and meat exported to other countries, second in the value of hides exported to other countries, and second in fed cattle marketing with over five million head representing over 22 percent of all cattle fed in the United States. Agriculture is a broad ranging field that covers all types of farming and livestock operations.

For every job on the farm, there are six jobs in related supply and processing businesses, according to the Kansas Beef Council. Every dollar of cattle sales directly generates $5 to $6 of business activity in farm supply, food, and other business. Twenty-one million persons work in some phase of the agriculture and food business. Grazing guidelines As I've had the opportunity to talk with livestock producers in the short time I've been here, there are two things that really come to the forefront: weed and brush control, and grazing management. Both are difficult subjects to address based on the wide variation from farm to farm and producer to producer.

There are some general guidelines for grazing, though, that every producer should consider. Over the next several weeks, I'd like to take the opportunity through this column to discuss five of these guidelines. The first guideline is maintenance of the forage. Forage must be maintained, no matter what your grazing PUBLIC NOTICE (Published in The Oskaloosa Independent April 29, May 6 and 13, 1999)3t IN THE DISTRICT COURT OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, KANSAS WIND-N-WAVE ESTATES HOME ASSOCIATION Plaintiff, v.
