her horse, Blaze, who is now for sale. She is retiring from the horse circuit and will attend Kansas State University where she plans to major in elementary education. She is the daughter of Steve and Mary Underwood, Winchester. This year Beth finished 12th in pole bending and 16th in barrel racing among 60 competitors. She won first place in pole bending in 1995.

Others from Jefferson County making state fair appearances in the horse ring were Jolie Van Petten, ttuarte: JIM BOOSE James Garland "Jim FireEagle" Boose, 76, Lecompton, died Sept 21, 1999, at his home near Lecompton. Mr. Boose had worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Meinholdt Welding, Topeka, and Hamm's Perry, before he retired in 1971 because of problems associated with multiple sclerosis. He served in the Army during World War II and was a sergeant with the 423rd Ordinance Evacuation Co. in the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theaters.

He was decorated with the WWII Victory Medal; European, African, and Middle Eastern Theater Ribbons; a Purple Heart; and a Bronze Star. He was born Feb. 1, 1923, in Topeka, the son of James C. and Grace Pansy Netterfield Boose. He traced his Indian ancestry to the Wampanoag and Northern Aztec people, and he had been involved in many Native American activities throughout the U.S.

since his retirement. He had made presentations through wilderness outfitters for the U.S. Forestry Service Fireside Chats, and he was an active member and spiritual advisor of the Will Rogers Indian Club in Springfield, Shawnee County Allied Tribes, and the Moberly, PowWow Committee. He married Marian Belle Mosher Feb. 24, 1944, in Topeka.

She survives. Other survivors include five sons, David W. Boose, Donald R. Boose James A. Boose, Michael A.

Boose, and Edward L. Boose, all Lecompton; two daughters, Barbara Russell, Lecompton, and Susan Boose, Lawrence; a brother, C. Davie Boose, Lecompton; three sisters, Faye Ayers, Lecomptom, Audrey Maust, Topeka, and Chalice Urton, Wichita; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services were Sept. 24 at Parker-Price Mortuary, Topeka.

Burial was at Big Springs Cemetery in Douglas County. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care, 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka, 66606-2800. PHYLLIS J. DENTON Phyllis J.

Denton, 71, Lawrence, died Sept. 22, 1999, at the Sterling House, Lawrence. She previously lived in Kansas City, and Whiting. She was a sales clerk for the Woolworth Department Store and a nurses aide. Mrs.

Denton was born April 9, 1928, at Whiting, the daughter of Ernie and Kathryn Snyder Williams. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Whiting. She married Earl Denton in 1951 in Horton. He died in 1969. Survivors include two sons, Dwight Denton, Perry, and Dewayne Denton, Horton; three sisters, Caroline Grulke, Aloha, Mary Cochren, Gladstone, and Jo Ann Nelson, Delano, and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Denton was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Marjorie Denton, a son, Douglas Denton, and a brother, John Williams. Graveside services were Sept. 27 at Spring Hill Cemetery, Whiting. Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary, Horton, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Phyllis Denton memorial fund to be designated later and sent in care of the mortuary, 909 Central Horton, 66439. 6, all 22 Hazel M. Hoffman Sowles, 95, Nortonville, died Sept. 25, 1999, at Village Villa, a nursing center in Nortonville. She was born Dec.

1, 1903, in Valley Falls, to Carl and Mary Miller McCoy, and attended Ellerman Grade School in Jefferson County. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Bible study group at the church, Mount Zion Chapter No. 284 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge, the auxiliary to the American Legion, Flower Club, and Get-Together Club, all in Nortonville. She was a former member of the Center School Board. She married William Hoffman Aug.

23, 1920. He died March 6, 1946. She married Clyde Sowles Oct. 2, 1953. He died in October 1989.

Survivors include sons, Mac Hoffman, Effingham, Bill Hoffman, Gardner, and John "Jack" Hoffman, Nortonville; daughters, Dorothy Jo Hagen, Flower Mound, Texas, and Rosemary Cummings, West Des Moines, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Services were Sept. 28 at the United Methodist Church, Nortonville. Private burial was in the Nortonville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Nortonville, 66060.

OTrimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, was in charge of arrangements. SAWYER WELCH Sawyer Christian Welch, 6, son of Edward and Tracy L. Welch, Fraser, died Sept. 25, 1999, at the Jefferson County Memorial Hospital, Winchester, after he was injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident the same day south of Winchester where he was visiting relatives. He was born Nov.

1 1, 1992, in Denver, to Edward and Tracy L. Edmonds Welch. He was in the first grade at Fraser Elementary School. Other survivors include two sisters, Amanda Nicole Welch and Madison Sherri Welch, both at home; his maternal grandparents, Don Edmonds, Houston, and Myrna Turner Ellsworth, Las Vegas; great-grandparents, Bill and Mary Edmonds, McLouth; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins in the Winchester, McLouth, and Ozawkie communities and in the Fraser and Grand County, areas. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents.

Barnett Funeral Home, Oskaloosa, is in charge of local arrangements. The Schoenfeld Mortuary, Hot Sulphur Springs, is in charge of Colorado arrangements. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at the Baptist Church, Fraser.

Relatives and friends will meet Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Fraser Valley Cemetery, Fraser. She and six other Jefferson County 4-H members competed at the state fair led by their 4-H project leaders Steve and Marcia Wilson, Perry. Beth, a Winchester 4-H member and senior at Jefferson County North High School, said she is trying to prepare for a "sad parting" from Winchester news by Thelma arris (913) 774-7211 Gene and Dorothy O'Neill returned from a trip to Nebraska and Colorado. They attended the Husker Harvest Days at Nebraska where the latest farm machinery was demonstrated on a 700-acre farm. Then they drove to Greeley and Denver, Colo, to visit Dorothy's sister-in-law, Mary Thompson.

On the way home they stopped at cattle sales in LaJunta, and Dodge City. They also looked at several large cattle feed lots. The Jefferson County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary met Sept. 24 at the hospital to plan a memorial to honor Adelle Corkill who founded the auxiliary and served as its president for many years. Those present were Hazel Sass, Anne Irwin, Alice Harvey, Bessie Hundley, Zoe Fulton, Dorothy Sullivan, Irene McPherson, and Joyce Clark.

The auxiliary will meet Oct. 22 for a luncheon with Hazel Sass serving as hostess. Winchester Senior Citizens met Sept. 22, at the Winchester Community Center with Betty Locke and Winifred Elliot as hostesses. There were 29 members and four visitors present.

The visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Gray and Lynn Luck of the Jefferson County Service Organization, and Sharon Ray of the Red Cross Respite Program. A card was signed for Don Ray who is a friend in Winchester. The Squaw Creek Tour was discussed.

Betty O'Neill, vice president, conducted the meeting in absence of Gene Elvic Esther Howard, 83, Lawrence, died Sept. 21, 1999, at a Lawrence hospital. She was born Feb. 23, 1916, in Lawrence, the daughter of Morris Henry and Mary Eva Trovillion Raber. She was raised in the Vinland and Fairview communities and she had lived in Lawrence since 1934.

She married Walter D. "Pete" Howard Jr. March 15, 1934, in Lawrence. He preceded her in death April 1998. Mrs.

Howard also was preceded in death by two sons, Walter LeRoy Howard and Gerald Dwayne Howard. Survivors include a son, John D. Howard, Lawrence; five daughters, Patricia J. Woodruff, Sharon Patterson, Joan L. Howard, and Delores Howard, Lawrence, and Glenda Wilkins, Perry; 17 grandchildren; 33 greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Graveside services were Sept. 22 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence. Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence, was in charge of arrangements. GEORGIA CHENAL Mass of Christian Burial was Sept. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Topeka, for Georgia Marie Chinal, 80, Topeka.

She died Sept. 20, 1999, at a Topeka care center. She was born Nov. 27, 1918, in St. Louis, to Vincent Paul and Georgia L.

Turley Ward. She graduated from a cosmetology school. She was a storekeeper for the Navy during WWII. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.Topeka, the Altar Society at the church, Daughters of Isabella, and the Spaulding Club, Topeka. She married William E.

Chinal April 28, 1946, in St. Louis. He died Jan. 18, 1995. Survivors include a son, Ward Chinal, address unavailable; a daughter, Gayla Copple, Topeka; a brother, Edward Ward, St.

Louis; a sister, Beatrice Davis, Perry, and six grandchildren. Burial was in West Lawn Memorial Gardens, Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N. Kansas, 66608. Parker-Price Mortuary, Topeka, was in charge of arrangements.

JEFFREY W. MAUL Jeffrey W. Maul, 49, Perry, died Sept. 23, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Mr.

Maul was a heavy equipment operator. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was born July 29, 1950, at Millville, N.J., the son of John W. Maul Sr. and Margaret Smith Maul.

He had lived in Perry for 25 years. He married Julia Glass Oct. 2, 1974, at Ottawa. She survives of the home. Survivors also include two sons, Rory Maul, Perry, and Brian Maul, Ozawkie; and two brothers, James Maul and John W.

Maul, both of Millville, N.J. Graveside services were Sept. 24 at Buster Cemetery, northeast of Perry. The family suggests memorials to the Jefferson County Hospice in care of the Barnett Funeral Home, 820 Liberty, Box 416, Oskaloosa, 66066. Verbal Auction Drawing 3:30 p.m.

Sharon Ray spoke on the respite program Jim and Joyce Clark went to Beattie Sept. 19 for a potluck dinner and the reunion of the Mina-Fairview School.

Joyce attended the Fairview school and her mother attended the Mina school. Joyce's brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Joyce Akin, Manhattan, attended. The Tony Noll Memorial Tournament was held Sept. 11 and 12 at Jefferson County North High School with the following results: Weishaar team, 1st, R.J's, 2nd, Locklin's, 3rd, and Skaggs, 4th. Proceeds go to JCN scholarships.

Don and Carol Reynolds returned Sept. 24 from a three-week trip to the east coast. They attended the Federal Prison Retirees convention in Washington, D.C. and did some sight-seeing. They toured the White House and Capitol, visited Ken, Debbie, and Sheena Dunn in Woodbridge, and drove to Fredricksburg, Va.

They visited the Amish village and train museum in Strasburg, Va. While in Emmaus it rained 7Vfe inches. Myra Pemberton returned from Anaheim, where she attended the Nationale 8-40 LaMarche. 8-40 is the honorary organization of the American Legion Auxiliary. Myra is Chaplain of the Departement de Kansas.

Around 200 women from across the United States attended the meeting. Rose O'Neill entertained the Winchester YMCA Sept. 20. Margaret Farris talked about her recent trip to Russia to visit her daughter, Melinda, who is employed at headquarters in Moscow.
