They should for each is typical of classified help wanted ads that appear daily in newspapers from coast to coast And each breaks the law is a flagrant nuiauuii vi uic V1V11 nig RS Act passed a full 10 years ago which specifically prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in all aspects of employment including help wanted ad vertising Despite federal and state laws despite such voluntary job equality plans as that recently adopted in the steel industry despite undeniable progress sex discrimination remains rampant throughout the US These ooenlv discriminatory ads reinforce sex stereotypes disproved long ago that women are best suited to retail store and factory jobs that men are the ones to be trained for managerial positions etc They perpetuate not only discrimination against female job seekers but also the utterly unequal pay that goes to women who are channeled from the start into lower status less responsible jobs at the bottom of the lad der In the words of la scathing report just issued by the Ver mont Public Interest Research Group (VPIRG): women are denied an equal opportunity at the very beginning of their quest for work they are even less likely to get a break further down the In a fascinating experiment the VPIRG surveyed nine out of 10 private employment agencies operating in Vermont Each agency was called first by a male researcher then by a female an hour or two later Both callers gave an identical list of qualifications for a age 23 single college graduate with a plus average some general work ex perience typing ability access to car willing to relocate and both asked what general type of work was available In every instance the response to the female was dramatically different from that to the male or example at one employment agency the male caller was told that he might be a candidate for positions in ac counting and computer programming while the female was told her opportunities were in clerical work sales and ac counting At another the male was advised of openings for a manufacturing engineer and as electronics technician and three secretaries The female was told there were three good secretarial openings At a third the male was informed that jobs available were but the female was told most openings were for secretaries and general office work At still another the male was told that job fields open to him were primarily sales and accounting while the female was asked you take Even at state employment service offices which are primarily supported by the Department of Labor the male caller heard quite a different story from that presented to the female In only one of nine public job service offices called were the same jobs listed in identical order to both male and female caller Surely after 10 years attorneys and other en forcement agencies in states which prohibit sex discrimination should begin to take these laws seriously and start to crack down On open violations Surely employment agencies should remind employers who persist in violating the anti discriminations laws that they are under legal obligation to comply with the Civil Rights Act and to keep up to date on court decisions and rulings on discrimination Surely yoti the job hunter or simply the newspaper reader should feel an obligation to report ads and any other discriminatory recruiting practices to authorities in charge of enforcing this law The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is headquartered at 1800 St NW Washington DC 20596 it also has regional offices across the country Whatever you do simply ignore the violations If you personally have the time or inclination to fight at least point out the facts to individuals and enforcement agencies with the time and determination to get into the battle Sex Discrim ination In Ads HlXDSOH Sex Discrim ination In Ads ULJ.
